As of October 30, 2026, the best legal way to play Ocarina of Time today is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, which grants access to the original Nintendo 64 version on Switch and Switch 2. If you want a standalone modern release, preorder the rebuilt Switch 2 edition for its November 5, 2026 launch. A used Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge remains the handheld option, while an authentic Nintendo 64 cartridge or GameCube bonus disc suits collectors and original-hardware fans.
These are separate releases and purchase models. The subscription library is not a permanent individual purchase, the Switch 2 remake is not available before its launch date, and the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 console does not include any copy of the game.

Can I play Ocarina of Time on Switch without buying it?
Yes. An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership lets you download the Nintendo 64 Classics application and play the original Ocarina of Time on either Switch or Switch 2. You are paying for membership access, not purchasing an individual game license.
Nintendo lists Ocarina of Time in its Nintendo 64 Classics catalog and explains the service in its Nintendo 64 Classics announcement. The application is obtained through the Nintendo Switch Online area of the console or the eShop. After installation, launch it with a Nintendo Account that has the required Expansion Pack membership.

How to start the original on Switch or Switch 2
- Open Nintendo eShop or the Nintendo Switch Online section on your console.
- Find the Nintendo 64 Classics application, not a standalone Ocarina of Time product page.
- Download the application while signed in to the account that will play it.
- Confirm that the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Open Nintendo 64 Classics and select Ocarina of Time.
Nintendo says the Classics application can work offline for up to seven consecutive days before it needs to reconnect for membership verification. If the membership expires, saved data stays on the console and can be used again after you renew the appropriate membership. Nintendo also says there are no plans to make these Classics games available outside the Nintendo Switch Online service; that statement concerns the Classics catalog, not the separately sold 2026 remake. See the Nintendo Classics support FAQ for those access rules.
What does Expansion Pack cost?
Nintendo’s U.S. storefront snapshot lists $49.99 for one year of individual Expansion Pack membership and $79.99 for one year of family Expansion Pack membership covering up to eight Nintendo Accounts. Those are membership prices checked in October 2026, not the price of an Ocarina of Time license; check Nintendo’s current membership page before paying because prices can change.

Do I need a Nintendo 64 controller?
No. Any supported Switch controller can operate Nintendo 64 Classics. Nintendo’s wireless Nintendo 64 controller is an optional accessory that pairs with Switch and Switch 2 and specifically mentions Ocarina of Time. Nintendo requires a paid Switch Online membership to purchase that controller directly and ships the offer to the United States and Canada; the controller does not include the game or Expansion Pack.
Should I preorder the Switch 2 remake?
Preorder it if you want a separately owned, rebuilt version and can wait until November 5, 2026. Nintendo has separate physical and digital listings for Nintendo Switch 2, each dated November 5, with a regular U.S. price of $59.99 in its October 2026 storefront snapshot.
Nintendo describes the project as a classic tale built from the ground up for Switch 2. The listing promises overhauled visuals, symphonic music, voice acting, expanded dialogue and scenes, and updated camera and movement controls. This is a new product rather than the Nintendo 64 Classics emulation, so the Expansion Pack subscription is not required to own it.

What is in the physical edition?
The first print run has textured-foil packaging while supplies last. That packaging detail does not establish a different game or an exclusive gameplay mode. Because the release is still in the future on the date of this article, treat retailer listings as preorders and verify the seller, fulfillment and edition before checkout.

What is in the digital edition?
Nintendo’s digital listing estimates a 27 GB download and expressly says the size may change at preorder time. Plan storage on the Switch 2 accordingly, but do not treat 27 GB as a final launch figure until Nintendo updates the listing.
The remake supports traditional button input for melodies. Nintendo also describes sound recognition from humming or an instrument near the Switch 2 microphone; no separate ocarina accessory is required. Those features belong to the Switch 2 remake and should not be assumed to exist in Nintendo 64 Classics or Ocarina of Time 3D.
Physical or digital: which should you choose?
| Choose | Why it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | You want a cartridge and first-print textured-foil packaging while supplies last. | It is a preorder until November 5, 2026; inspect seller and fulfillment details. |
| Digital | You prefer installation without changing game cards. | Nintendo estimates 27 GB, subject to change; it is unavailable before launch. |
Is Ocarina of Time on regular Nintendo Switch Online?
No. The original is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, not the basic Nintendo Switch Online tier. Installing the Nintendo 64 Classics application does not convert the game into a standalone purchase, and Nintendo’s support guidance says the Classics catalog is tied to the relevant active membership.
If you only have the basic tier, the Nintendo 64 application and its Ocarina of Time access are not included. Upgrading to Expansion Pack is the route Nintendo documents for playing the original on current Switch hardware.

Is Ocarina of Time 3D still available after the 3DS eShop closed?
Yes, but only as a legitimate existing copy or a secondhand physical cartridge. Ocarina of Time 3D is the earlier Nintendo 3DS remake, not the Switch 2 remake announced for November 2026.
Nintendo’s packaged-edition announcement describes remodeled graphics, touch-screen item management, gyro aiming, Master Quest and Boss Challenge. A used cartridge plus compatible 3DS-family hardware therefore gives you a portable physical release with features that differ from both the N64 original and the upcoming Switch 2 rebuild. The announcement cited here is European evidence of the packaged edition; it does not guarantee current U.S. stock or universal cartridge-region compatibility.
Why the 3DS eShop is not a new-purchase route
Nintendo ended new 3DS and Wii U eShop purchases on March 27, 2023. Nintendo says people who bought software previously can redownload it and download updates for the foreseeable future, but it does not promise that redownload access is guaranteed forever. See Nintendo’s eShop closure support page for the current wording.
What to check when buying a used 3DS cartridge
- Confirm that the listing is for the physical Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge, not a case, download-code card or unrelated Zelda item.
- Ask for clear photos of the cartridge label and contacts, and check the seller’s return policy.
- Verify that your 3DS-family system can use the cartridge and that the seller’s regional details match your console; official sources cited here do not establish universal region compatibility.
- Do not assume that a cartridge includes a console, charger or digital eShop entitlement.
Can I still buy the original Nintendo 64 or GameCube versions?
Yes. An authentic used Nintendo 64 cartridge with a working Nintendo 64 is the direct physical route to the original presentation. Nintendo also documented a limited-edition GameCube bonus disc containing both Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time: Master Quest.
Nintendo 64 cartridge
This option gives you original hardware, an owned cartridge and no recurring Nintendo Switch membership. It also requires the console, compatible display setup and a cartridge whose condition you trust. Nintendo’s official material does not establish current resale prices, supply, battery condition or completeness, so any seller’s price is a secondary-market claim rather than an official valuation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
GameCube bonus disc
The bonus disc is most compelling for collectors or anyone specifically seeking Master Quest. It is a GameCube-era disc, not a Switch or Switch 2 game card, and it requires suitable disc-playing hardware. Nintendo’s historical discussion of the disc appears in Iwata Asks.
How to avoid counterfeit or incomplete vintage copies
- Request photographs of the actual cartridge or disc, not only stock images.
- Check that the label, shell, disc artwork and contacts look consistent with an authentic release.
- Ask whether the seller tested the item; treat that as the seller’s statement, not an independent performance guarantee.
- Confirm return terms before buying because official sources do not provide a current condition or price standard for used copies.
Which legal route is best for your setup?
- Play today on modern hardware: choose Expansion Pack if a recurring membership is acceptable and you want the original N64 version immediately.
- Own a modern standalone release: preorder the Switch 2 physical or digital edition and wait for November 5, 2026. Choose physical for a cartridge and possible textured-foil first printing; choose digital for installation without swapping cards.
- Play portably with Master Quest: find a legitimate Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge and a compatible 3DS-family system. Confirm condition and regional details with the seller.
- Preserve original hardware: buy an authentic N64 cartridge for the original experience, or the GameCube bonus disc if Master Quest and collecting are priorities.
How we picked
The ranking weighs date of access, required hardware, recurring membership versus standalone ownership, original presentation versus remake features, portability, and the risks of buying used hardware or media. It includes only Nintendo-documented releases and access methods, with qualifications where official sources do not establish current resale prices, stock, compatibility or final specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 include the game?
No. Nintendo’s product listing for the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 explicitly says the game is not included. The themed console is hardware, not a bundle containing the Switch 2 remake, Nintendo 64 Classics membership or any physical cartridge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAre unauthorized ROM downloads a legal substitute?
This guide covers Nintendo-supported purchases and access methods, not a definitive legal analysis of emulator files or fan projects. Owning an original cartridge does not by itself make downloading an unauthorized ROM from an unrelated website an authorized Nintendo distribution. For a clear, supported path, use the Classics service, a legitimate physical release or the official Switch 2 edition.
What should you verify before checkout?
If you are choosing Expansion Pack
- Confirm that the plan says Expansion Pack, not basic Nintendo Switch Online.
- Check whether the membership is individual or family and whether its renewal terms suit you.
- Remember that membership grants library access while active rather than an individual Ocarina of Time license.
If you are preordering Switch 2
- Confirm the listing says Nintendo Switch 2 and shows the November 5, 2026 release date.
- Choose physical or digital deliberately; they are separate editions.
- For digital, leave room for a download Nintendo currently estimates at 27 GB, subject to change.
- For physical, verify seller, fulfillment and whether first-print packaging is still available.
If you are buying used media
- Confirm the exact release: N64 cartridge, 3DS cartridge or GameCube bonus disc.
- Check photos, condition, authenticity signals and return terms.
- Budget for the required console and accessories, because the media alone does not provide a modern platform.
What is the simplest recommendation?
Use Expansion Pack when your priority is playing the original immediately on hardware you already own. Preorder the Switch 2 remake when standalone ownership and rebuilt presentation matter more than playing before November 5, 2026. Choose Ocarina of Time 3D for a legitimate handheld copy with Master Quest, or vintage N64/GameCube media when original hardware and collecting are the point.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Nintendo 64 controller with the Switch 2 remake?
Nintendo’s controller listing confirms pairing with Switch and Switch 2 and specifically references Ocarina of Time in the Nintendo 64 Classics context. It does not establish that every remake control feature or microphone-based melody input works with that accessory, so treat the controller as optional rather than a guaranteed remake requirement.
Is the Switch 2 remake’s 27 GB download size final?
No. Nintendo labels 27 GB as an estimate on the digital product page and says the size may change at preorder time. Check the listing again around launch before deciding how much storage to reserve.
Will any Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge work in every 3DS system?
Official material cited for the packaged release does not establish universal regional compatibility. Verify the cartridge region, your console model and the seller’s return policy before purchasing a used copy.
Does buying the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 give me Nintendo 64 Classics access?
No. Nintendo identifies that system as hardware and states that the game is not included. Nintendo 64 Classics access still requires the appropriate Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
