The first three Ocarina of Time dungeons follow a fixed child-Link sequence: Inside the Deku Tree → Dodongo’s Cavern → Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. After Link becomes an adult, the route opens up. A clear, low-confusion progression is Forest Temple → Fire Temple → Water Temple → Shadow Temple → Spirit Temple → Ganon’s Castle, but several adult dungeons can be rearranged once their prerequisites are available.
The table and route notes below explain where every main dungeon is, exactly what opens its entrance, and which parts of the sequence are flexible. Optional Bottom of the Well and Ice Cavern are listed separately so they do not get confused with mandatory temples.

Recommended dungeon order at a glance
| Phase | Dungeon | Location | How to reach the entrance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Child 1 | Inside the Deku Tree | Kokiri Forest | Get the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield, then speak with the Great Deku Tree. |
| Child 2 | Dodongo’s Cavern | Death Mountain | Receive the Goron’s Bracelet from Darunia and use a Bomb Flower to open the route. |
| Child 3 | Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly | Zora’s Fountain, behind Zora’s Domain | Find Ruto’s Letter in Lake Hylia, show it to King Zora, catch a fish, and release it before Lord Jabu-Jabu. |
| Adult 1 | Forest Temple | Sacred Forest Meadow in the Lost Woods | Obtain the Hookshot from Dampé’s Crypt, reach the Meadow, and use the Hookshot on the small tree. |
| Adult route | Fire Temple | Death Mountain Crater | The Goron Tunic helps Link enter the crater; Sheik teaches Bolero of Fire there. |
| Adult route | Water Temple | Beneath Lake Hylia | Sink with the Iron Boots and use the Hookshot to open the entrance. |
| Late adult | Shadow Temple | Below Kakariko Village’s graveyard | After the relevant story event, learn Nocturne of Shadow; Din’s Fire opens the entrance and the Lens of Truth assists inside. |
| Late adult | Spirit Temple | Desert Colossus | Cross the desert and learn Requiem of Spirit. Its progress then switches between child and adult Link. |
| Final | Ganon’s Castle | End-game castle | Reach it after the medallion dungeons and clear its six seal rooms before the final encounters. |
This is a recommended route, not a rule that every player must follow. The child sequence is the structured part. In the adult portion, Forest, Fire and Water have documented alternate progressions, and Shadow and Spirit can be interchanged after their prerequisites are met.

There are two different questions hidden inside “What is the dungeon order?” The first is the story sequence the game presents to a new player. The second is the practical question of which doors, songs and equipment make each entrance usable. Those are not always identical. A temple may appear later on a printed checklist even though the game lets you visit it earlier, or you may reach an entrance and still need to return as the other age.

For that reason, use the numbered list as a reliable default, then use the access notes as a troubleshooting guide. If an entrance does not work, check the listed item or story action before assuming that the dungeon is out of order. In particular, the adult section is better understood as a set of connected options than as nine rigidly locked steps.
Child Link’s fixed three-dungeon sequence
1. Inside the Deku Tree
The adventure starts in Kokiri Forest. Before the Great Deku Tree can send Link inside, collect the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield, then speak to the Great Deku Tree. The dungeon introduces the game’s basic dungeon rhythm and awards the Fairy Slingshot. Its boss is Queen Gohma.
There is no useful reason to leave this dungeon for later: it is the first child dungeon and establishes the story route that leads toward Death Mountain. If you are following a checklist, this is the point where the main dungeon path begins rather than an optional detour.
The important access distinction is that the equipment and the conversation with the Great Deku Tree are separate checkpoints. Having one piece of equipment but not completing the conversation does not replace the other step. Once the Deku Tree section is complete, Death Mountain is the next major destination.
2. Dodongo’s Cavern
After the Deku Tree section, the next main destination is Death Mountain. Darunia provides the Goron’s Bracelet, which is the progression item that makes the Bomb Flower route into Dodongo’s Cavern possible. Use a Bomb Flower to open the way into the cavern.
Dodongo’s Cavern is therefore not simply a location you can enter by exploring Death Mountain early. If the entrance route seems unavailable, the missing story reward from Darunia is the important checkpoint. Completing the cavern moves the child phase toward the Zora region.
This is the first place where the order is tied directly to a progression item. The useful sequence is not merely “go to Death Mountain, then look for the cavern”; it is “finish the Darunia step, obtain the bracelet, and then use the Bomb Flower route.” That distinction explains why an early visit can end with no obvious way forward.
3. Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly
The third child dungeon is inside Lord Jabu-Jabu at Zora’s Fountain, behind Zora’s Domain. Its entrance requires a short chain of actions rather than a conventional door key: find Ruto’s Letter in Lake Hylia, show it to King Zora, catch a fish, and release that fish before Lord Jabu-Jabu.
Keep those actions in that order when checking your progress. The letter is the item that begins the interaction with King Zora; the fish is the object used immediately before Lord Jabu-Jabu. Reaching Zora’s area without completing that chain does not count as opening the dungeon.
Once this dungeon is complete, the fixed child-dungeon sequence is finished. The game’s later route is shaped by the transition to adult Link and by which progression items and songs you have collected.
Why the adult route is not completely linear
Guides often print the adult dungeons as a single list, but that can make optional ordering look mandatory. The walkthrough evidence supports several valid progressions. Forest is a straightforward first adult choice, yet Fire and Forest can be swapped in a suitable progression, and Water can be reached before Fire is fully finished in one documented route. After the required story and item prerequisites are in place, Shadow and Spirit can also change order.

A practical way to avoid confusion is to treat the adult sequence as three bands:
- Opening adult access: Forest, Fire and Water are the main early choices. The route in this article starts with Forest because its entrance and Hookshot-based access are easy to verify.
- Late adult choices: Shadow and Spirit become available after their songs, entrance-opening items and story conditions are satisfied. They are not locked to one universal order.
- Finale: Ganon’s Castle follows the medallion dungeons and is the end of the main dungeon route.
“Flexible” does not mean that every temple is available immediately after the time transition. Each one still has a gate. Fire has its crater and tunic-related access notes, Water depends on the Iron Boots and Hookshot, Shadow depends on a story event, Nocturne of Shadow and Din’s Fire, and Spirit requires the desert crossing and Requiem of Spirit. The flexibility begins after those gates are satisfied.
The least-confusing plan is therefore to use Forest, Fire and Water as your opening adult cluster, complete the side objective that supplies the Iron Boots before Water if needed, and then choose Shadow or Spirit according to the songs and equipment already in your inventory. Returning to a temple later is normal; it is not evidence that you made a wrong turn.
Adult dungeon route and entrance details
4. Forest Temple — the recommended first adult dungeon
The Forest Temple is in the Sacred Forest Meadow, which is reached through the Lost Woods. The practical entrance route begins with Dampé’s Crypt: obtain the Hookshot there, travel to the Meadow, and use the Hookshot on the small tree to reach the temple entrance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Putting Forest first gives the route a clear orientation point. It also explains why returning to the Lost Woods as adult Link without the Hookshot can feel like a dead end: the small-tree entrance is the final access step, not merely a visual landmark.
Think of the Forest Temple route as a three-part check: adult Link must be able to reach Dampé’s Crypt, the Hookshot must be obtained there, and the Hookshot must then be used at the Meadow. If the Meadow is accessible but the temple entrance is not, the missing Hookshot step is the likely reason.
5. Fire Temple — Death Mountain Crater
The Fire Temple is in Death Mountain Crater. The Goron Tunic is described as helping Link enter the crater, and Sheik teaches Bolero of Fire there. Fire is often listed immediately after Forest, but it is not permanently fixed to that position; the walkthrough also documents adult progressions that change the relationship between Forest, Fire and Water.
If you choose Fire before Water, treat it as the next major objective after establishing adult access. If you choose another valid progression, returning later is normal rather than a sign that the game has been broken.

The important route information is geographic and musical as well as chronological: the crater is the destination, the Goron Tunic is associated with entering it, and Bolero of Fire is learned there from Sheik. Those details help distinguish Fire Temple preparation from the separate Iron Boots and Hookshot requirements used by Water Temple.
6. Water Temple — beneath Lake Hylia
The Water Temple lies beneath Lake Hylia. Use the Iron Boots to sink and the Hookshot to open the entrance. Inside, progression depends on changing the water level so that different rooms and routes become accessible.
Water is the clearest example of why a printed list should not be mistaken for a strict script. It can occupy the third adult-dungeon position in the recommended route, but a documented progression reaches it before Fire is completely finished. The key decision is whether you have the entrance requirements and are ready to manage the dungeon’s water-level changes, not whether a particular previous temple has a universally required completion order.

If you arrive at Lake Hylia and cannot reach the entrance, check both tools rather than only one. The Iron Boots handle the sinking step, while the Hookshot opens the entrance. Inside, the water-level changes are part of the dungeon’s core progression, so a room that appears inaccessible may simply require a different water setting.
7. Shadow Temple — beneath Kakariko’s graveyard
The Shadow Temple entrance is beneath the graveyard in Kakariko Village. After the relevant story event, learn Nocturne of Shadow. Din’s Fire opens the entrance, while the Lens of Truth helps Link navigate the temple’s deceptive routes.
Shadow is a late adult destination because several separate conditions converge at its entrance: the story event, the song, the fire-based opening action and the navigation aid. Once those conditions are met, the temple can be approached before or after Spirit Temple rather than being forced into one sequence by its name on a checklist.
Bottom of the Well is closely related to this preparation because it yields the Lens of Truth. That does not make the well one of the main temples, but it explains why players often complete it while preparing for Shadow. Keep the location and the reward separate in your notes: the well is in Kakariko Village, while the Shadow Temple entrance is beneath the graveyard.
8. Spirit Temple — a two-age dungeon at Desert Colossus
The Spirit Temple stands in Desert Colossus. Cross the desert and learn Requiem of Spirit to establish access. The unusual part comes afterward: the temple’s progress is split between child and adult Link. You return as child Link for one section, then use adult Link for the other.

Finishing one section does not mean the dungeon has been designed as a single uninterrupted adult visit. Plan to switch ages and revisit the temple as the route requires.
Spirit can be interleaved with Shadow once the relevant prerequisites are available. The deciding factor is not a universal “Spirit must be last” rule; it is whether you have crossed the desert, learned the song and are prepared to handle the child-and-adult division of the dungeon.
9. Ganon’s Castle — the final main dungeon
Ganon’s Castle comes after the medallion dungeons. The walkthrough describes six seal rooms inside the castle; clearing those rooms is the final dungeon work before the last encounters.
Because it is the finale, Ganon’s Castle is not another choice in the Forest–Fire–Water or Shadow–Spirit ordering question. It belongs at the end of the main route once the preceding dungeon progression has been completed.
Recommended Free Tools
When planning the final approach, separate “reaching the castle” from “finishing the castle.” The castle is the destination after the medallion dungeons, but the six seal rooms still have to be cleared before the final encounters. Treating those rooms as part of the final dungeon objective prevents an incomplete checklist from looking like a missing temple.
Optional dungeons and where they fit
Two smaller locations are easy to mistake for mandatory temples. They are best treated as side dungeons and kept separate from the main route.

Bottom of the Well
Bottom of the Well is in Kakariko Village. Learn Song of Storms as adult Link, return as child Link, and play the song at the windmill to drain the well. The reward is the Lens of Truth.
Its placement is practical rather than linear: completing it supplies the Lens that helps with Shadow Temple navigation, but the well itself is not one of the three child dungeons or six principal adult destinations listed above.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Ice Cavern
Ice Cavern is behind the frozen Zora’s Domain. Blue Fire is used to progress through it. Its reward is the Iron Boots, after which Sheik teaches Serenade of Water.
Because the Iron Boots are the access tool for Water Temple, Ice Cavern is a useful side objective before Water if you are following the recommended route. It remains separate from the main dungeon count in guides that classify it as a mini-dungeon.
Ice Cavern therefore fits naturally between adult preparation and Water Temple, but it is not a mandatory numbered temple in the main sequence. Its two practical contributions are the Iron Boots for sinking at Lake Hylia and the Serenade of Water taught by Sheik afterward.

How dungeon totals are counted
There is no single universal total unless the counting method is stated. The GameFAQs walkthrough used for the route describes the game as having nine dungeons, two mini-dungeons and one optional dungeon. That is the guide’s classification, not a standardized industry statistic. Other lists may group Bottom of the Well or Ice Cavern differently, so compare the categories as well as the number.
For a player planning the main story, the useful distinction is simpler: three child dungeons, six principal adult destinations including Ganon’s Castle, and optional or side locations that support progression without being mandatory in the same way.
Do not add the side areas to the numbered route merely to make the total match a particular guide. Instead, label what you are counting: main-route dungeons, mini-dungeons, or optional areas. That approach explains why two otherwise accurate lists can show different totals.
A reliable checklist for following the route
- Complete Inside the Deku Tree in Kokiri Forest.
- Use Darunia’s Goron’s Bracelet and a Bomb Flower to enter and finish Dodongo’s Cavern.
- Complete the Letter, King Zora, fish and Lord Jabu-Jabu steps for Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.
- As adult Link, obtain the Hookshot from Dampé’s Crypt and enter the Forest Temple through Sacred Forest Meadow.
- Choose Fire Temple next for the straightforward route, remembering that Forest, Fire and Water have documented alternatives.
- Use the Iron Boots and Hookshot for Water Temple; expect to change water levels inside.
- Complete the prerequisites for Shadow and Spirit, then take either late-temple order that fits your available items and songs.
- Reach Ganon’s Castle after the medallion dungeons and clear its six seal rooms.
For a more detailed readiness check, confirm the following before moving on: the child entrances have been opened with their story items; the Hookshot is available for Forest; the crater route and Goron Tunic notes are understood for Fire; the Iron Boots and Hookshot are ready for Water; Nocturne of Shadow, Din’s Fire and the Lens of Truth are available for Shadow; and Requiem of Spirit has been learned before attempting the two-age Spirit Temple route.

The compact answer is therefore Deku Tree → Dodongo’s Cavern → Jabu-Jabu’s Belly → Forest → Fire → Water → Shadow → Spirit → Ganon’s Castle. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ocarina of Time’s dungeon order completely fixed?
Only the child sequence is fixed: Inside the Deku Tree, Dodongo’s Cavern, then Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. Adult Link has a recommended route, but Forest, Fire and Water can be rearranged in documented progressions, and Shadow and Spirit can switch order after their prerequisites are met.
Can I do Water Temple before Fire Temple?
Yes. A documented progression reaches Water Temple before Fire is completely finished. You still need the Iron Boots and Hookshot, and you must be ready to change the water level inside the temple.
What is the easiest first adult dungeon?
Forest Temple is the clearest first adult choice. Get the Hookshot from Dampé’s Crypt, reach Sacred Forest Meadow through the Lost Woods, and use the Hookshot on the small tree to enter.
How do I open Dodongo’s Cavern?
Receive the Goron’s Bracelet from Darunia, then use a Bomb Flower to open the route into the cavern on Death Mountain.
How do I enter Jabu-Jabu’s Belly?
Find Ruto’s Letter in Lake Hylia, show it to King Zora, catch a fish, and release the fish before Lord Jabu-Jabu at Zora’s Fountain.
Why do I need to visit Bottom of the Well?
Bottom of the Well is optional, but it yields the Lens of Truth, which helps navigate Shadow Temple. Learn Song of Storms as adult Link, return as child Link, and play it at the windmill to drain the well.
Is Spirit Temple one dungeon visit?
Its progress is split between ages. After crossing the desert and learning Requiem of Spirit, return as child Link for one section and adult Link for the other.
Are Bottom of the Well and Ice Cavern main dungeons?
They are commonly treated as side or mini-dungeons rather than part of the numbered main route. Ice Cavern is behind frozen Zora’s Domain, uses Blue Fire, and rewards the Iron Boots; Bottom of the Well is in Kakariko Village and rewards the Lens of Truth.
How many dungeons does Ocarina of Time have?
The GameFAQs walkthrough cited for this route classifies the game as having nine dungeons, two mini-dungeons and one optional dungeon. Totals vary because guides categorize Bottom of the Well and Ice Cavern differently.
What comes after the medallion dungeons?
Ganon’s Castle is the final main dungeon. The walkthrough describes six seal rooms that must be cleared before the final encounters.
The Bottom Line
Recommended order: Inside the Deku Tree → Dodongo’s Cavern → Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly → Forest Temple → Fire Temple → Water Temple → Shadow Temple → Spirit Temple → Ganon’s Castle. The first three are fixed. Adult Link’s temples are flexible, so use the listed entrance requirements, songs and age changes to decide when each one is actually ready.
