For most first-time players with compatible hardware, choose The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. Nintendo’s 2011 Nintendo 3DS remake keeps the same core adventure while rebuilding the visuals, adding touch-based inventory management, optional glasses-free 3D, hint videos, and extra challenge modes. Choose the 1998 Nintendo 64 release when the original controller, release-era presentation, Rumble Pak support, or the atmosphere of playing the historical original matters more than convenience.
The two editions are not separate story campaigns. Your decision is mainly about presentation, controls, hardware, authenticity, and the amount of post-game material you want.

Which version of Ocarina of Time should you play?
Play Ocarina of Time 3D unless your main goal is to reproduce the 1998 Nintendo 64 experience. The 3DS edition removes menu friction, presents a rebuilt visual version of the adventure, and gives newcomers optional help when they get stuck. It is the easier recommendation for a first run and the more feature-rich choice for a replay.
The N64 game is the better fit for a narrower but important set of priorities: original hardware, original controller behavior, release-era graphics and sound presentation, and the historical feeling of playing the version that established the game’s identity. It is not automatically better because it came first; it is better when authenticity is the feature you value most.

Choose 3DS when you value convenience
- You are playing the adventure for the first time.
- You want to change equipment without repeatedly stopping to navigate the original menu layout.
- You prefer rebuilt visuals and a portable system.
- You want optional hint videos or additional challenge content after the main adventure.
- You have compatible Nintendo 3DS hardware and would like the choice of stereoscopic 3D.
Choose N64 when authenticity is the priority
- You want the original 1998 presentation rather than a remake.
- You specifically want the Nintendo 64 controller and its analog-stick feel.
- You have an N64 setup and value its Rumble Pak support.
- You collect original releases or want to experience the game in its historical context.
What are the N64 and 3DS editions?
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launched for Nintendo 64 in 1998. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D followed for Nintendo 3DS in 2011 as a remake and enhanced edition of that same adventure. Nintendo described the handheld release as the classic returning with enhanced visuals and updated convenience features.
That relationship matters when setting expectations. The 3DS game is not a sequel, a side story, or a second campaign built around a different protagonist. The central adventure is fundamentally the same, so the choice should be made on how you want to experience it rather than on the assumption that one edition tells a different story.

How do controls and item management differ?
The 3DS version keeps analog movement but makes equipment management faster through the touch screen. The N64 version gives you the original three-pronged controller layout and the interaction model designed around it.
Nintendo 3DS controls
Nintendo says the 3DS edition retains the original’s analog-control concept through the Circle Pad while “greatly improves ease of use with a touch-based inventory system.” In practice, the important distinction is not a new movement system; it is the reduced interruption when you need to change an item or equipment assignment.
The lower touch screen acts as an always-available management surface. That makes the 3DS edition particularly comfortable for players who dislike opening a full-screen menu during exploration, combat, or puzzle solving. The Circle Pad preserves the analog movement idea while fitting it to the handheld.
Nintendo 64 controls and Rumble Pak support
The N64 edition uses the Nintendo 64 controller layout and its original analog stick. Nintendo’s instruction manual documents support for the N64 Rumble Pak, which is part of the original hardware experience rather than a feature added by the remake.
Recommended Free Tools
That controller is a deciding factor for enthusiasts. If the shape, button placement, analog-stick behavior, and physical rumble are why you want the N64 release, the 3DS convenience features will not reproduce that specific feeling.

Are the 3DS graphics and stereoscopic 3D a major change?
Yes, the 3DS edition replaces the N64-era presentation with rebuilt, higher-fidelity visuals. Nintendo’s launch description highlighted “remastered graphics” alongside updated controls and hint videos. The visual work is therefore part of the remake’s identity, not merely a display filter applied to the original cartridge.
Compatible Nintendo 3DS hardware can display optional glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. You can treat that effect as an extra presentation choice rather than a requirement: the adventure remains playable without using stereoscopic depth. Nintendo notes that the game displays in 2D on Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL systems.
The N64 release has a different strength. Its original rendering, menus, and presentation are inseparable from the 1998 console context. Players seeking historical authenticity may prefer those characteristics even though the 3DS image is the clearer and more modern-looking option.
What extra content does Ocarina of Time 3D include?
The 3DS edition adds support features and replay modes around the same main adventure. Contemporary coverage of the release documents Master Quest and Boss Challenge, while Nintendo’s launch material calls out hint videos intended to keep players from becoming hopelessly stuck.
Hint videos
Hint videos are optional assistance for players who do not know what to try next. They make the remake more approachable without requiring every player to use them. If you want an entirely self-directed first run, you can simply ignore the help.
Master Quest
Master Quest is additional challenge content included with the 3DS edition. It gives a completed main adventure a reason to be revisited, especially for players who want a more demanding second pass rather than another untouched run of the standard route.
Boss Challenge
Boss Challenge provides another replay-oriented activity after or alongside the main adventure. Its value is straightforward: it lets players return to major encounters instead of treating the ending as the only stopping point.

These additions do not turn the 3DS edition into a separate story. They expand the ways to play around the same core journey.
Why do some players still prefer the N64 original?
The N64 version offers authenticity that a remake cannot duplicate. Its appeal comes from the complete package of 1998 hardware, controller, software presentation, and the atmosphere associated with the original release.
For collectors, the cartridge and console are part of the object being preserved. For retro-hardware enthusiasts, the original analog stick and Rumble Pak support matter more than touchscreen shortcuts. For players revisiting a formative game, the N64 edition can also be the most meaningful way to reconnect with the version they remember.
Those are legitimate reasons to choose the older release, but they are priority-based reasons. The original does not gain a broader story or a larger documented campaign simply by being the first version.

It is worth replaying when you want a more convenient presentation or additional challenge modes; it is less compelling if your only goal is to repeat the same adventure unchanged. The remake’s value comes from how it changes the surrounding experience rather than from a different central plot.
| Your reason for replaying | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| See the adventure in rebuilt visuals | 3DS | The handheld edition uses an enhanced visual presentation. |
| Reduce menu interruptions | 3DS | The touch-based inventory makes equipment access more immediate. |
| Try optional help after getting stuck | 3DS | Hint videos are available for players who want guidance. |
| Continue with extra challenges | 3DS | Master Quest and Boss Challenge add replay activities. |
| Recreate the original console experience | N64 | The controller, presentation, and Rumble Pak support are original to that release context. |
A first-time player who has access to both will usually gain more practical benefit from 3DS. A returning player who already knows the game’s layout may find the N64 version more interesting precisely because it preserves the constraints and texture of the original.
Which version is better for a first playthrough?
Ocarina of Time 3D is the stronger first-playthrough choice for most people. Its touch inventory addresses a recurring source of friction, its rebuilt visuals are easier to read on modern handheld hardware, and its hint videos provide an optional escape route when a puzzle or objective stalls progress.

That recommendation assumes you have compatible Nintendo 3DS hardware and do not specifically want the original console experience. If your available setup is an N64 and you are excited by that hardware, playing the original is still a sound first choice; the game’s core adventure remains the same.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat hardware do you need for each version?
The N64 edition requires the original Nintendo 64 environment, while the 3DS edition requires Nintendo 3DS-family hardware. Your choice may therefore be determined by what you already own before graphics or convenience enter the discussion.
N64 setup
- Nintendo 64 console.
- The N64 release of Ocarina of Time.
- A Nintendo 64 controller for the original control layout.
- An N64 Rumble Pak if you want the documented rumble feature.
3DS setup
- A compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system.
- Ocarina of Time 3D.
- A stylus is useful for the touch-based inventory, but it is an accessory rather than a separate game requirement.
- Stereoscopic 3D is optional; Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL systems display the game in 2D.
Optional accessories such as a stylus, screen protector, case, or charger should be checked against the exact 3DS model you own. They support the handheld setup but are not reasons to choose one edition over the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check before buying either version?
Check the exact edition, hardware compatibility, and current availability before paying. Prices, stock, seller conditions, and refurbished-hardware listings change, and no stable current price should be assumed from the release history alone.
- Confirm that a listing is for the 1998 Nintendo 64 game or the 2011 Nintendo 3DS remake, not merely merchandise or an unrelated Zelda release.
- For an N64 purchase, verify that you have a working Nintendo 64 and controller; treat Rumble Pak support as an optional part of the setup.
- For a 3DS purchase, verify the specific Nintendo 3DS-family model and whether you want stereoscopic 3D or are comfortable with a 2D system.
- Inspect the seller’s current description for cartridge, disc-free handheld software, console, or accessory condition rather than relying on an old price reference.
- For third-party controllers or chargers, check compatibility claims carefully and do not assume they are official Nintendo products.
How should you decide in common situations?
“I have never played Ocarina of Time.”
Choose 3DS if you have compatible hardware. The touch inventory, rebuilt visuals, optional hints, and additional challenge content make it the most accommodating introduction.
“I want to understand why the original is historically important.”
Choose N64. The original controller, presentation, and release-era hardware are part of what you are trying to study or feel.
“I finished the N64 game years ago and want a fresh replay.”
Choose 3DS if you want presentation changes and post-game options. Choose N64 if the goal is to revisit the exact original format rather than a remake.

“I only have a Nintendo 2DS.”
The game can be displayed in 2D on Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL systems, so the lack of stereoscopic depth does not remove the remake’s other features.
“I care most about a physical retro collection.”
Choose the N64 edition and its original console context. A 3DS copy belongs to a different generation and serves a different preservation goal.
What is the final recommendation?
Pick Ocarina of Time 3D as the default recommendation; pick the N64 game deliberately for authenticity. The 3DS release is the more convenient, visually refreshed, portable, and replay-friendly edition. The N64 release remains the right answer when the original controller, 1998 presentation, Rumble Pak support, or collector value is the point of the purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Ocarina of Time 3D need stereoscopic 3D to work?
No. Stereoscopic depth is an optional display feature, so the game can be played without it. Nintendo specifically identifies Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL systems as displaying the game in 2D.
Does the N64 version support rumble?
Yes. Nintendo’s original instruction manual documents support for the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak. You need the accessory and compatible controller setup to use that feature.
Are Master Quest and Boss Challenge separate stories?
No. They are additional challenge and replay modes surrounding the same main adventure, not independent story campaigns with a different narrative.
Should I buy a replacement 3DS stylus or charger with the game?
Only if your current handheld setup needs one. A stylus, case, screen protector, or charger is optional, and model compatibility should be confirmed before purchase.
