When OneDrive is not uploading photos, the cause is usually a disabled Camera backup setting, the wrong Microsoft account, a full storage quota, unavailable photo originals, or the app being prevented from running in the background. Start with the non-destructive checks: verify your internet connection and account, confirm Camera backup is enabled, check available Microsoft storage, and leave OneDrive open or running in the background. Then apply the instructions for your device. On iPhone and iPad, iCloud-optimized photos are a particularly common blocker; on Android, missing permissions, charging restrictions, and folders outside the camera directory can explain partial uploads.
Do not assume that reinstalling OneDrive will preserve a large queue. Microsoft warns that resetting or reinstalling can cause a substantial photo library to be scanned and uploaded again.

OneDrive Camera backup is an upload feature, not a two-way photo synchronizer. Microsoft describes it this way: “Camera backup uploads photos and videos to OneDrive; it doesn’t sync them both ways.” A phone can therefore finish uploading a picture while retaining its local copy, and removing the phone copy later does not remove the completed OneDrive copy.
Uploads can stop for several independent reasons. The selected account may not be the account you are checking, Microsoft storage may be full, the operating system may suspend OneDrive in the background, or the phone may hold only an iCloud-optimized version of an image. Large libraries also take time to enumerate and process; facial-recognition and location metadata can add delay before the files appear online.

What should I check before changing OneDrive?
Work through these checks in order. They do not delete local photos or reset the upload database.
- Confirm connectivity. Open another website or app, then connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network. If you intend to use cellular data, verify that OneDrive is allowed to use mobile data.
- Confirm the Microsoft account. Open OneDrive’s profile or account screen and note the signed-in address. Camera backup on Android and iOS can back up only one selected OneDrive account at a time, so an upload may be complete in a different account.
- Check Camera backup. In OneDrive settings, make sure Camera backup or Camera Upload is enabled for that account. A disabled switch stops new automatic uploads without affecting files already stored online.
- Check Microsoft storage. A full quota blocks new uploads, edits, and synchronization. Free space or increase the available capacity, then retry.
- Keep OneDrive running. Microsoft states, “Keep the OneDrive app running in the background. Closing the app can prevent automatic uploads.” Do not force-close the app while a queue is active.
- Look in the expected location. Camera uploads can be arranged in Year and Month subfolders under Camera Roll. A file that is not in the root view may still be present in the date folder.
How do I fix OneDrive Camera Upload on an iPhone or iPad?
iOS has two special requirements: OneDrive must be allowed to run in the background, and the original photo must be available on the device. Follow these steps.
1. Verify the account and Camera Upload switch
Open OneDrive, select your profile, open Settings, and check Camera Upload. Confirm that the displayed Microsoft account is the one whose files you are viewing on the web or another device. If the switch is off, enable it and leave the app open while the initial scan begins.
2. Set the network and power conditions
Connect the iPhone or iPad to Wi-Fi. If cellular uploading is necessary, enable the mobile-data option in Camera Upload and confirm that iOS allows OneDrive to use cellular data. Connect the device to a charger, turn off Low Power Mode temporarily, and check that Background App Refresh is enabled for OneDrive. Do not swipe OneDrive away from the app switcher: force-closing it can stop automatic uploads.
3. Make iCloud originals available
OneDrive cannot upload photos that exist only as iCloud-optimized copies. In iOS Photos settings, choose the option that downloads and keeps the originals on the device rather than optimizing storage. Keep the device on Wi-Fi and power while iOS downloads the affected originals; OneDrive can upload them only after the full files are locally available.

4. Give a large library time to process
A new or very large camera roll may spend a long time indexing before the visible upload count changes. For overnight processing, use OneDrive’s Bedtime Backup while the device is connected to Wi-Fi and power. Avoid repeatedly changing settings during this first scan, because each interruption can delay completion.

Tap the plus button in OneDrive and upload one photo from the Photos picker. If that file uploads, your network and account are functioning; the problem is more likely Camera Upload configuration, iOS background execution, or unavailable originals. If the manual upload also fails, return to the storage, account, and connectivity checks before resetting the app.
6. Reset only after the basic checks
When the queue remains stuck, use Profile > Settings > Account > Reset. Start the app again and allow it to rebuild its state. Reinstalling should be a later step, not the first one: Microsoft warns that a large library may need to be enumerated and uploaded again after a reset or reinstall, so apparent progress can disappear while the process restarts.
How do I fix OneDrive Camera backup on Android?
Android camera backup depends on permissions, the selected network, charging policies, and the folders you have chosen. Check each item in OneDrive before changing app data.
1. Select the correct account and enable backup
Open OneDrive, go to your profile and Settings, and open Camera backup. Verify the account shown there, then turn Camera backup on. Only one OneDrive account can be selected for camera backup on a device, so switching accounts can make previously uploaded photos seem to vanish from the current view.

2. Grant photo access and choose the network policy
Allow OneDrive access to photos and videos when Android asks. Review the network setting and permit uploads on your chosen connection. If Upload only when charging is enabled, connect the phone to power before expecting the queue to move; otherwise, disable that restriction when appropriate for your data plan.
3. Include the media you actually want
Turn on Include videos if videos are the missing items. Use Back up device folders to add images stored outside the standard camera folder, such as screenshots or images saved by another app. Camera backup does not automatically cover every folder on the phone.
4. Check storage and retry on stable Wi-Fi
Review the Microsoft storage indicator and free space if the quota is full. Then leave the phone on a stable Wi-Fi connection and allow the queue to retry. Burst photos or several images with identical timestamps can be skipped or appear missing in Android; inspect the original device folder and manually upload an affected file to test it.
What should I do when OneDrive is stuck on Windows or macOS?
The desktop client handles folders already on the computer, while mobile Camera backup handles the phone’s camera roll. A cloud icon in the notification area or menu bar shows whether OneDrive is running, paused, out of space, or reporting an error.
Check the client state
Select the OneDrive cloud icon and read the status message. Resume syncing if it is paused, sign in again if credentials have expired, and confirm that the local OneDrive folder is on a connected disk. Install available OneDrive updates and restart the client before making more disruptive changes.

Unlink and relink a persistently stuck account
If the status remains unchanged after a restart, unlink the computer from OneDrive and sign in again. Allow the account to rebuild its file list, and do not interrupt the first reconciliation of a large library. Confirm that the files are present online before deleting any local copies.
Handle work or school libraries separately
SharePoint and work or school libraries can stop because of a file conflict, stale credentials, or cached upload data. Review conflicts, confirm the account has permission, clear cached upload data when your organization permits it, and stop and resync the affected library if required. These steps are separate from personal Camera backup.
Reset the Windows client when its error condition calls for it
For supported Windows errors, reset the OneDrive client and restart it. A reset can trigger a fresh synchronization pass, so make sure important files are safely online or backed up elsewhere before removing local data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy did OneDrive upload only some of my pictures?
Partial uploads usually reflect a scope or availability difference rather than random loss.
- Different account: The phone may be backing up account A while you are viewing account B.
- Different folder: Android may be backing up only the camera folder while the missing images are screenshots, downloads, edited exports, or app-created folders.
- Videos excluded: Camera backup can be enabled for photos while Include videos remains off.
- iCloud optimization: iOS may show a thumbnail while the full original remains in iCloud, which OneDrive cannot upload.
- Background or charging limits: iOS may have been force-closed, or Android may be waiting for Wi-Fi or a charger.
- File ordering issues: Android burst images or files sharing identical timestamps can be skipped or difficult to locate. Check the source folder and retry manually.
- Storage exhaustion: Once the Microsoft quota is full, new files stop while older uploads remain visible.
Search OneDrive by filename and inspect the Year and Month folders under Camera Roll before assuming a file is missing.

How can a manual upload diagnose the problem?
Manual upload separates a basic account or network failure from an automatic-backup failure. Choose one recent photo that is definitely stored locally, then use OneDrive’s plus button and upload it to a test folder.
- If the manual upload succeeds, leave the file in place and revisit Camera backup, background permissions, charging rules, and folder selection.
- If it fails immediately, check the selected account, available Microsoft storage, network access, and photo permissions.
- If it succeeds only on Wi-Fi, review cellular or metered-network restrictions rather than resetting the app.
- If a single file uploads but a large queue does not move, keep the device powered and connected while the library is indexed; large queues are not evidence of a transfer-speed failure by themselves.
Should I reset or reinstall OneDrive?
Resetting is reasonable after account, storage, permission, and background checks have failed. On iPhone or iPad, use Profile > Settings > Account > Reset. On Windows, use the supported OneDrive reset procedure for the reported error, then restart the client.
Recommended Free Tools
Reinstall only after considering the size of the library and confirming that irreplaceable photos exist on the phone or in another backup. Microsoft warns that resetting or reinstalling can restart scanning and uploading for a large collection. It is not a shortcut that guarantees preservation of the current queue.
Which fix applies to my situation?
| Symptom | Most likely check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No new photos on any device | Account, Camera backup switch, or full Microsoft storage | Verify the account and quota, enable backup, then retry |
| iPhone shows thumbnails but uploads fail | iCloud-optimized originals | Download and keep originals on the device, then use Wi-Fi and power |
| Android misses screenshots or downloads | Folders outside the camera directory | Use Back up device folders and select the needed folders |
| Uploads stop when the screen locks | Background, Low Power Mode, or charging restrictions | Allow background activity, disable restrictive power settings, and keep the device charged |
| One file uploads manually but Camera backup does not | Automatic-backup configuration | Recheck account selection, permissions, network policy, and folder scope |
| Desktop status remains paused or errored | Client state or credentials | Resume, update, restart, then unlink and relink if necessary |
How can I prevent future camera-upload stoppages?
- Keep Microsoft storage below its limit so a full quota does not halt new uploads.
- Leave OneDrive installed, signed in to the intended account, and permitted to run in the background.
- On iOS, periodically use Wi-Fi and power for large libraries and avoid force-closing OneDrive.
- On Android, document which device folders and media types are included, and review the charging-only setting after system updates.
- For important photos, verify that files appear online before deleting local originals. Camera backup is one-way, so a completed cloud copy remains when the phone copy is removed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a large OneDrive photo upload take?
Microsoft does not publish a universal upload-time estimate. A large library must first be enumerated, and facial-recognition or location metadata can add processing time, so the visible count may remain unchanged while the device is working.
Can I back up two Microsoft accounts from the same phone at once?
No. Camera backup on Android and iOS supports one selected OneDrive account at a time. To use another account, change the selected account and treat the two libraries as separate destinations.
Will OneDrive upload photos while I use mobile data?
It can, but mobile-data permission and the app’s network policy must allow it. If uploads work on Wi-Fi but not cellular, review the Camera Upload mobile-data setting and any metered-network restriction before changing account state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does a photo look present on my iPhone but still fail to upload?
The Photos app can display an iCloud thumbnail even when the full-resolution original is not stored locally. OneDrive requires that original file, so download and keep the original on the device before retrying.
