An empty OneDrive Personal Vault usually indicates a locked vault, the wrong Microsoft account, or a deletion that is hidden until you unlock the vault—not immediate proof that your files are gone. Sign in at onedrive.com, confirm the account address, unlock Personal Vault with its extra verification step, and wait for the contents to load. Then open the OneDrive Recycle bin, unlock the vault there, and enable Show Personal Vault items. Personal accounts generally retain deleted items for 30 days; eligible Microsoft 365 subscribers can also roll the entire OneDrive back up to 30 days. Why is my OneDrive Personal Vault suddenly empty?
The most common explanation is that Personal Vault has locked itself. The vault requires a separate identity check and automatically locks after inactivity. On the web, Microsoft documents a 20-minute inactivity lock; on mobile, the documented interval is 3 minutes. A locked vault can look unavailable or empty until you authenticate again.

Other possibilities include being signed in to a different Microsoft account, a file that never finished syncing, deletion from another device, or an account-retention issue. Diagnose access first, then deletion, and only then consider a broader restore.

How do I check that I am using the right account and unlock the vault?
Use the web interface first because it gives you the clearest view of the cloud copy and both recovery controls.
- Open onedrive.com in a private or incognito browser window. This avoids a stale session from another account.
- Check the signed-in email address before opening anything. If you use several Microsoft identities, write down which address is displayed. Personal, work, and school accounts have separate OneDrive storage.
- Select Personal Vault and complete the additional verification step Microsoft requests. Depending on your account, that can involve a code or another configured identity check.
- Wait for the vault contents to finish loading. Do not judge the result while the page is still fetching thumbnails or file names.
- Open a file you recognize, or check its details, to confirm that you are looking at the expected vault rather than an empty folder in another account.
If the vault relocks while you are investigating, unlock it again. The short mobile timeout is intentional, so a phone can return to a locked state while you switch apps or read a message.
How can I recover deleted Personal Vault files?
Deleted vault items are hidden from the normal recycle-bin view until the vault is unlocked and the Personal Vault filter is enabled. Follow this exact sequence on OneDrive.com:
- Unlock Personal Vault first.
- Open the OneDrive Recycle bin.
- Choose Show Personal Vault items.
- Look for the missing file or folder, select it, and choose Restore. Restore a containing folder when several related files disappeared.
For a personal Microsoft account, Microsoft documents a 30-day recovery period for deleted OneDrive items. Work or school accounts generally have a 93-day period, although an administrator can set different retention rules. The clock is based on deletion, not on the day you notice the problem, so recover promptly.

An item removed permanently from the OneDrive Recycle bin cannot be restored through OneDrive’s normal tools. Emptying the recycle bin, using a permanent-delete command, or allowing the retention period to expire can therefore end the cloud recovery path.
What changes when deletion happened on Windows?
Deleting a Personal Vault file from a Windows 10 PC can remove the local copy permanently instead of placing it in the computer’s Recycle Bin. If that folder had already synchronized to OneDrive, however, the uploaded copy may still be present in the OneDrive.com Recycle bin. That is why the web recycle bin must be checked even when the PC’s bin is empty.

When should I use Restore your OneDrive?
Use whole-drive restoration when many files changed or disappeared together and you have an eligible Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. It is broader than restoring one item and is useful for a mass deletion, a large mistaken move, or extensive corruption.
- In OneDrive on the web, open Restore your OneDrive.
- Choose a restore point within the previous 30 days. Select a time just before the disappearance, while still allowing for any legitimate changes you made afterward.
- Review the proposed changes and confirm the restore.
- Afterward, inspect the Recycle bin. Content created after the selected restore point is moved there as part of the rollback, so newer work can appear to have vanished until you restore it individually.
This feature is for subscribers covered by Microsoft’s current Microsoft 365 offering; it is not a general guarantee for every OneDrive account. If you cannot see the restore command, verify the subscription and account identity before assuming the files are unrecoverable.

What should I check if the vault and both recycle bins are empty?
Work through the remaining possibilities in order. Each check distinguishes a missing cloud file from a missing local copy or an account mix-up.
Try every Microsoft account you may have used
Sign out and test other personal addresses, then test the work or school account if your organization provided one. A vault belongs to the account that created it; signing in with a second address produces a perfectly valid but unrelated, empty vault. Microsoft also notes that a personal account inactive for two years may have been deleted, which can remove its stored content.
Search the device, not OneDrive search
Use the operating system’s file search on the computer, phone, or tablet. Check common OneDrive folders, Downloads, camera-import folders, and any location where you may have moved a file before it synchronized. Online-only files may have no usable local copy, while a file that never completed upload may exist only on the original device.
Inspect the device Recycle Bin or Trash
Check the Windows Recycle Bin or macOS Trash, and the equivalent deleted-items area on your phone or tablet. These locations are independent of OneDrive’s cloud recycle bin. A local copy can remain there even when the cloud copy was removed, but a cloud-only file will not appear locally.

Reset the OneDrive account on iOS when the app is out of sync
For an iPhone or iPad that does not show expected files, Microsoft suggests resetting the OneDrive account from the app’s settings. Sign in again afterward and unlock Personal Vault. This refreshes the app’s account state; it does not recover an item that has already been permanently deleted from the cloud.
Escalate with useful details
Contact Microsoft Support after checking the account, unlocked vault, both recycle bins, local storage, and any available restore point. Support agents are not allowed to access the contents of your files, so provide file names, folder names, an approximate last-access or deletion time, the device used, and the account address. For a work or school account, give the same information to your Microsoft 365 administrator; organization-level retention, audit, or backup policies may provide options unavailable to a personal account.

The location and state of a file determine which action can work. Use this map before repeating a search that cannot find Personal Vault content.

What Personal Vault limits can be mistaken for missing files?
Personal Vault is available to personal users on OneDrive Basic, Personal, and Family, and it works on the web, in mobile apps, and on Windows PCs. It is a protected area, not a shareable folder: Personal Vault sharing is blocked.

Without Microsoft 365 Personal or Family, Microsoft documents a limit of three files in Personal Vault. Subscribers can add files up to their available OneDrive storage limit. If an upload seems to disappear after you reach the non-subscriber limit, check whether it was ever accepted and synchronized rather than assuming it was deleted.
Uploading a file does not guarantee that every device already has a local copy. A cloud item may be online-only, and a local item may be waiting for synchronization. Look for the OneDrive sync status on the originating device and keep it connected until the upload finishes.

- Unlock Personal Vault before searching for a file and periodically verify that critical uploads appear on OneDrive.com.
- Keep the Microsoft account address recorded with your recovery information, especially when you use both personal and organization accounts.
- Allow synchronization to complete before shutting down or deleting a local source file.
- Maintain a second copy of irreplaceable documents on separate storage, such as a portable external SSD. That copy is preventive backup, not a way to recover an item already permanently deleted from OneDrive.
- For business or school data, ask the administrator what retention and backup policies apply; the organization’s rules can differ from Microsoft’s personal-account defaults.

Can I search for a Personal Vault file by its file name?
No. Personal Vault files are intentionally omitted from OneDrive search results. Open and unlock the vault itself, then browse its folders or use the browser’s page-find function after the contents have loaded.
Does changing my Microsoft password delete Personal Vault files?
Changing a password does not by itself delete vault content, but it can sign you out of devices and require a new verification step. After signing in again, confirm the account address and unlock the vault before checking synchronization.
Will restoring OneDrive overwrite files I created today?
A whole-OneDrive restore moves content created after the chosen restore point to the Recycle bin rather than silently discarding it. Review that bin after the rollback and restore any newer files you still need.
Can Microsoft Support send me a copy of a permanently deleted vault file?
Microsoft states that support agents are not permitted to access customers’ file contents. If an item is permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle bin and no restore point or organizational backup exists, the standard recovery tools cannot bring it back.
