Onimusha: Warlords Remastered is most appealing if you want a compact, sword-focused action game with striking art direction and can enjoy older design conventions. Critics generally found its action and presentation worthwhile, but the short campaign, dated mechanics, and limited additions make it a less compelling upgrade for newcomers expecting a modern remake.

What did critics think of Onimusha: Warlords Remastered?

Metacritic lists a 71 Metascore based on 31 critic reviews for the remaster. Its displayed review distribution is 14 positive, 17 mixed, and zero negative, making the reception mixed-to-positive rather than unanimous. These figures describe the reviews currently listed on Metacritic; scores and counts can vary by platform or aggregation.

The favorable case centers on responsive swordplay, atmosphere, and visual improvements. Gaming Age recommended it as a short, action-packed classic with replay value, while Nintendo Life pointed to lighter tank controls and improved visuals. Nintendo Life’s excerpt also questioned whether the updated soundtrack was an improvement.

The reservations are substantial for players unfamiliar with the original. IGN’s excerpt said the mechanics and visuals had aged poorly and that the release added too little for some newcomers. Gamersky likewise called it short and noted the absence of new playable content, while acknowledging improvements to graphics and controls. The score makes more sense when read alongside that split: critics could appreciate the action and presentation while still finding the package dated or slight.

What is the remaster, and what changed?

The remaster was initially released on January 15, 2019, and Metacritic lists PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One among its platforms. That date is for the remaster, not the original Onimusha: Warlords, which appeared earlier on PlayStation 2.

Steam’s indexed product description says the updated version preserves the original’s swordplay and revenge story and adds improved controls, widescreen display, and a new soundtrack. Critics also refer to visual improvements. The available review evidence characterizes the release as a presentation and control update, not a content expansion: it does not add new playable content according to Gamersky’s review excerpt.

So, approach it as a remaster of the existing game rather than a remake built around a substantially new campaign. The updated display and controls may make the original more approachable, but they do not erase its older design or provide a larger experience.

Is Onimusha: Warlords worth playing?

It is a good fit if

  • You want a relatively short action game built around swordplay rather than a sprawling adventure.
  • You value the original’s art direction and atmosphere, and are interested in seeing them with visual improvements.
  • You are comfortable with older mechanics and want a lightly updated way to revisit a classic.

You may want to skip it if

  • You expect a modernized remake with extensive new content or a redesigned campaign.
  • You are especially sensitive to dated mechanics or want a long game for your time and money.
  • You consider a new soundtrack an automatic improvement; at least one cited review excerpt was skeptical of the update.

There is no measured completion-time figure in the cited material, so “short” is best understood as a recurring critical observation, not a precise hours estimate. The reviews support a clear distinction: the remaster can be enjoyable for what the original does well, but its modest scope is a real limitation rather than a hidden bonus.

Does it matter before Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

Capcom’s December 13, 2024 announcement described Onimusha: Way of the Sword as the first new title in the series in over 20 years and scheduled it for 2026 at the time. That makes the remaster a possible way to sample the older series, not a confirmed prerequisite: Capcom’s announcement did not say that players must finish Warlords first. Because that timing came from a 2024 announcement, check Capcom’s current listing for the newer game’s release status.
