Choose Nioh 2 if you want a demanding action RPG built around a created half-Yokai hero, weapon and equipment builds, Yokai abilities, and documented online co-op. Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword like Nioh 2?
They share a supernatural version of samurai-era Japan and demand attention to enemy attacks, but they organize that challenge around different priorities. Onimusha presents a authored Musashi adventure in early Edo-period Kyoto. Nioh 2 makes you a customizable half-Yokai protagonist in a supernatural Sengoku setting, then layers stances, equipment, skills and Yokai powers onto every encounter.

How Onimusha’s swordplay is structured
- Parry and deflect: These are the core defensive answers described for Musashi. They reward recognizing an attack rather than simply absorbing damage.
- Issen: A precise counterattack is part of the game’s signature vocabulary. The emphasis is on the timing of the exchange, not on assembling a large equipment spreadsheet.
- Enemy stamina and Break Issen: Director Satoru Nihei says Break Issen becomes available after an enemy’s stamina has been depleted. That creates a clear combat rhythm: pressure the opponent, watch its stamina, then exploit the opening.
- Soul absorption: Absorbing souls is another documented part of the toolkit, giving fights a resource-management layer alongside the blade work.
These systems do not mean Onimusha has no progression or upgrades. They mean the published feature descriptions put the spotlight on what happens in the duel itself, with Musashi as a fixed protagonist rather than a build assembled from interchangeable parts.
How Nioh 2 layers combat systems
- Stances: High, mid and low stances change the way a weapon attacks and defends. Choosing the appropriate stance is part of the normal combat loop, not an occasional menu decision.
- Weapon skill trees: Each weapon family has its own skills and unlocks, so changing weapons can change the decisions you make in a fight.
- Burst Counter: This is a timing-based response to dangerous enemy attacks. It gives Nioh 2 a precise counter mechanic even though its overall design is much more RPG-heavy.
- Yokai abilities and Soul Cores: Defeated Yokai can provide abilities that expand your options beyond ordinary weapon attacks.
- Yokai Shift: The protagonist can enter a Yokai form, adding another layer to decisions about when to spend or preserve supernatural power.
- Onmyo magic and ninjutsu: These systems supply additional buffs, debuffs and tools, allowing a build to lean into magic, stealth-oriented techniques or conventional weapon damage.
In practical terms, Onimusha asks, “Can you read this enemy and execute the response?” Nioh 2 asks that question while also asking which stance, skill, Soul Core, spell, weapon and equipment arrangement you prepared. The latter is the better fit if experimenting with systems is itself part of the appeal.

Nioh 2 is the clear choice for players who want an action game with ongoing gear decisions. Its weapon skill trees, equipment development, Onmyo magic, ninjutsu and Yokai abilities are all documented parts of progression. Your created protagonist can be shaped around different weapons and supernatural tools, and changing that setup is part of the game’s identity.
Onimusha is better suited to someone who wants progression to support a defined hero and a tightly authored adventure. The available descriptions identify Musashi, his sword techniques and soul-based combat resources, but they do not present Nioh 2’s breadth of loot and build systems. Do not buy it expecting Nioh 2’s equipment-driven loop; buy it for the encounter-to-encounter swordplay and the story built around Musashi.
What are the stories and protagonists like?
Onimusha follows Miyamoto Musashi. The game places him in early Edo-period Kyoto against the Genma, the series’ supernatural adversaries. It is a dark-fantasy premise rather than a literal historical simulation. Nihei has also said the story has no direct connection to earlier Onimusha stories, so the new game is designed as its own entry.

Nioh 2 lets you create the protagonist. Your character is a half-Yokai moving through a supernatural Sengoku-period setting. That premise gives you room to define appearance and combat direction, but it also makes the story less about inhabiting one established historical hero than Onimusha’s Musashi campaign.

Do I need to play earlier Onimusha games?
No. Nihei described the project as rebuilding the universe so first-time players can start without knowledge of previous titles: “We rebuilt the universe from the ground up so that first-time players can jump right in without any knowledge of the previous titles.” That supports treating Way of the Sword as a standalone starting point, not as homework for the older games.
Previous Onimusha stories may provide context for the Genma and the series’ tone, but the documented story premise does not require them. If you want a self-contained Musashi adventure, the new entry is the more direct route.
Can I play either game with friends?
Nioh 2 is the safer choice for verified co-op. The US PlayStation listing for Nioh 2 Remastered – The Complete Edition specifies optional online play and support for up to three online players with PlayStation Plus. That describes online participation; it does not mean an internet connection is mandatory for the game or establish cross-platform matchmaking.
Capcom’s Nintendo Switch 2 specification for Onimusha lists one player. The cited Onimusha material does not verify an online co-op mode, so do not choose it on the assumption that friends can join the campaign. If multiplayer is central to your purchase, Nioh 2 has the documented feature advantage.

What does “up to three online players” mean?
The listing’s wording indicates a maximum group size of three online players on the PlayStation version with PlayStation Plus. It does not promise that every mission supports the same arrangement, that all platforms share matchmaking, or that co-op replaces the solo campaign. Check the platform-specific service requirements before buying.

Onimusha is a current-generation release across four platform families, while Nioh 2 offers a PS4 route in addition to its PS5 remaster and Windows edition. If you already own only an Xbox or Switch 2, that makes Onimusha the available choice. If you have a PS4 disc library, Nioh 2 may be the more economical way to enter its game, provided your console and edition meet the compatibility requirements below.
Should I buy Nioh 2 on PS4 or the PS5 Complete Edition?
Buy the PS5 Remastered Complete Edition when you want the remastered PlayStation 5 version and all documented expansion content in one package. Choose the PS4 version when that is the hardware you own or when you specifically want a PS4 physical copy, but verify what DLC is included before assuming it is the Complete Edition.
What is included in Nioh 2 Complete Edition?
The Windows Complete Edition includes all three expansions: The Tengu’s Disciple, Darkness in the Capital and The First Samurai. PlayStation also lists a PS5 Remastered Complete Edition. A base-game PS4 disc should not automatically be treated as containing those expansions.

Can a PS4 disc be used in a PS5 Digital Edition?
No. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 Blu-ray disc because it has no disc drive. A PS4 disc requires a compatible PlayStation 5 model with a disc drive, and upgrade eligibility depends on the specific edition and DLC you own. If your PS5 is digital-only, plan on a digital purchase rather than a disc-based upgrade.
What are the physical and digital choices for Onimusha?
Capcom confirms a physical Standard Edition for Onimusha and describes the Deluxe and Premium Deluxe editions as digital. That makes the Standard Edition the straightforward physical route for a PS5 buyer, while the higher named editions should be treated as digital products unless a retailer explicitly identifies a different format.
Capcom’s Japanese Switch 2 support listing identifies a physical key-card format. A key-card is not the same thing as a full game cartridge, so check the regional packaging and download requirements if you are buying a physical Switch 2 copy outside your usual market.

Capcom has described an Onimusha demo, but availability can vary by platform and region, so confirm that it is still offered in your storefront before treating it as a current download. Demo progress does not continue into the full game. Retaining the demo save data can instead unlock a charm in the full release.

That makes the demo useful for checking whether the basic feel of parries, deflects and Issen appeals to you, but it is not a way to carry a campaign start into the retail version.
What do the published sales figures tell you?
Capcom reported more than 1.7 million Onimusha: Way of the Sword units sold in a business update dated October 27, 2026. The same update reported more than 11 million cumulative units for the Onimusha series. Those are publisher-reported sales figures, not review scores, difficulty measures or evidence that one combat system is better for every player.

An earlier Capcom announcement reported more than one million units sold on launch day, dated September 7, 2026. The later October figure supersedes that older snapshot for the game’s cumulative sales, but neither figure changes the buying decision as directly as the combat, platform and multiplayer differences.
