Onimusha: Way of the Sword released worldwide on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It is the first new Onimusha game in more than 20 years. You play Miyamoto Musashi in a dark-fantasy version of early-Edo Kyoto, where clouds of Malice have twisted real locations and local legends into a battlefield against the grotesque Genma. Its combat centers on close swordplay, parries, deflections, dodges, Issen counterattacks, Soul Absorption and powers from the Oni Gauntlet.

When did Onimusha: Way of the Sword release?

Capcom’s final worldwide release date was September 4, 2026. The game was initially scheduled for September 25, but Capcom moved the launch forward before confirming the final date.

This is a full new installment rather than a remaster of an older game. It follows the series’ long absence with a new protagonist, new setting and updated sword-fighting systems designed for current-generation hardware.

What platforms is Onimusha: Way of the Sword on?

The released game is available on four platform families:

Platform Availability
PlayStation 5 Worldwide release
Xbox Series X|S Worldwide release
Nintendo Switch 2 Worldwide release
PC Steam, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store

Capcom’s announced platforms do not include PlayStation 4, Xbox One or the original Nintendo Switch. When buying, check the store page for your region because physical stock, digital editions and available languages can differ by market.

Who do you play as in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

The protagonist is Miyamoto Musashi, the historically famous swordsman. Capcom’s version places him in an early-Edo Kyoto invaded by Genma after supernatural Malice transforms the city. He carries the Oni Gauntlet, an artifact that grants abilities beyond human limits, even as he seeks to prove himself through his own swordsmanship.

The game uses real Japanese locations, historical figures and local myths as foundations for its fantasy world. Musashi’s likeness is based on the late actor Toshiro Mifune, whose period-film portrayals influenced the character’s appearance.

What is the story and tone?

Kyoto is recognizable but corrupted: clouds of Malice hang over the early-Edo city, changing its streets and landmarks into hostile spaces. The Genma are grotesque, otherworldly enemies rather than ordinary human soldiers, giving the campaign a horror-tinged dark-fantasy tone.

The central conflict combines historical swordsmanship with supernatural escalation. Musashi must confront Genma threats while deciding when to rely on the Oni Gauntlet’s powers and when to fight with conventional technique. Capcom producer Akihito Kadowaki described the game as “a blood-soaked sword-fighting saga where Miyamoto Musashi gains the power of the Oni.”

How does the combat work?

Combat is built around reading an opponent at close range rather than simply attacking until an enemy’s health bar is empty. The launch description highlights several interacting tools:

  • Parries and deflections: meet incoming attacks with precise timing to interrupt or control an exchange.
  • Dodges: reposition around attacks and create openings when a direct block is unsafe.
  • Issen counterattacks: a returning signature mechanic that rewards a well-timed response with a powerful counter.
  • Soul Absorption: collect and manage souls released in battle, adding a resource decision after enemies fall.
  • Oni powers: use the Oni Gauntlet to access supernatural abilities alongside Musashi’s normal sword techniques.

The result is a swordplay loop based on timing, spacing and choosing the right response to an enemy’s attack. The systems are designed to make individual clashes matter, with supernatural tools expanding the options available during difficult encounters.

Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword hard?

Available evidence establishes a timing-focused combat system, but it does not provide a reliable difficulty ranking, a complete list of difficulty modes or a campaign-length estimate. Expect the game to demand attention to enemy animations and counter timing, then consult the in-game options and your platform’s current listing for the exact accessibility and difficulty settings included in your edition.

If you are new to Onimusha, practice the difference between a normal attack, a defensive deflection and an Issen response before relying heavily on Oni powers. Learning when to absorb souls and when to keep distance should make later fights more manageable than treating every encounter as a damage race.

Is there a demo?

Capcom announced a PlayStation 5 demo in June 2026 and later referred to multiple demo releases and pre-launch hands-on opportunities. Those announcements describe a historical pre-release promotion, not a permanent guarantee that a demo remains downloadable after launch.

To check current availability, search the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Nintendo eShop or the relevant PC storefront for the game’s official listing. A demo can be delisted, replaced or limited by region, so the store page is the authoritative source for what is available now.

How successful has the game been?

Capcom reported more than 1 million units sold worldwide on launch day in 2026. The company also said cumulative Onimusha series sales had passed 10 million units, placing the new release inside a long-running commercial history rather than treating it as an untested revival.

The game also won Best Gameplay and Best Sony PlayStation Game at the Gamescom Awards 2026, following the August 26–30 event. Those awards recognize gameplay and PlayStation presentation, but they do not establish a universal difficulty or review score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Onimusha: Way of the Sword continue an existing storyline?

It is a new mainline installment set more than two decades after the previous new entry. The protagonist and setting are new, so familiarity with earlier games is not presented as a requirement for understanding Musashi’s conflict.

Is Miyamoto Musashi a real historical figure in the game?

Yes. The game uses the historical swordsman as its lead while placing him in a fictional supernatural crisis. His depiction is additionally shaped by Toshiro Mifune’s film portrayals rather than being a literal historical reconstruction.

Are the Genma based on Japanese mythology?

The world draws on local myths and historical material, but the Genma are presented as grotesque otherworldly enemies created for the game’s dark-fantasy setting. Individual creature origins can vary within that fictional framework.

Does the game support cross-play between platforms?

The cited launch information confirms the platforms but does not establish cross-play, cross-progression or shared online features. Check the current platform listings and Capcom’s support information for those functions.
