“Multiplayer” alone does not tell you whether a game lets friends cooperate online—or whether players on different systems can join the same session. Check three separate things: the game mode, how players connect, and whether their exact platforms are compatible.
What do online multiplayer, co-op and crossplay mean?
These terms describe different parts of playing with other people. A game can support one without supporting the others.

- Multiplayer means more than one person can play. It does not specify the mode, connection method, group size, or platform compatibility.
- Co-op describes a mode in which players work toward a shared goal. It can be a campaign, missions, survival, or another shared activity.
- Online multiplayer connects players in different physical locations to the same live game state. It can include cooperative or competitive play, and even asynchronous turn-based play. Epic Games’ developer guidelines distinguish online play from local multiplayer, where players share a physical location.
- Crossplay, also called cross-platform play, lets people using different platforms play together in the same game. Support depends on the title and the platform combination; “crossplay” does not necessarily mean every device is supported. Epic Games’ July 2025 guide explains crossplay across PC, consoles, and mobile.
- Cross-save lets a player carry saves or progression between platforms. It is separate from crossplay: neither feature guarantees the other.
For example, a game could have online player-versus-player matches but no online co-op campaign, or local co-op but no online mode. Look for the specific mode you want rather than treating “multiplayer” as proof that your group can play together.

- Confirm the co-op mode. Find out whether the game has the shared activity your group wants—such as campaign co-op, missions, or survival—rather than only competitive multiplayer or local play.
- Check online support. Confirm that the desired co-op mode can be played over the internet. A game may offer local co-op without online co-op.
- Match the platforms. Check whether the game supports crossplay between every player’s platforms, not just whether it supports crossplay in general. Consult the current product page and the game’s own feature or support information. Microsoft’s Xbox Store category separates filters for cross-platform co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, online co-op, and online multiplayer—a useful distinction when browsing, but not a substitute for confirming a title’s exact setup.
- Check party size and joining. Verify the maximum co-op group size and whether your group can join the same activity. Look for private lobbies or friend invites if you do not want public matchmaking.
- Check accounts and restrictions. Find out whether players need publisher accounts or other sign-ins, and whether any restrictions affect invitations or joining. Microsoft’s Xbox multiplayer requirements address joinable sessions, multiplayer activity surfaces, and disclosure of publisher-account sign-in requirements and relevant restrictions.
- Check progression separately. If anyone may switch devices, verify whether the game supports cross-save or cross-progression; crossplay by itself does not establish that progress carries over.
- Confirm access for everyone. Check the current edition, any required expansion or DLC, purchase or subscription access, and online-service requirements for each player. These details can change.
Where can you find reliable platform details?
Start with the game’s current store listing, then check its official feature page or support documentation for details the listing leaves unclear. Compare platform names explicitly: “PC and console crossplay,” for example, is more useful than an unqualified “cross-platform.” Store filters can help narrow a search, but they do not confirm every edition, region, account requirement, or platform pair.
As one dated example, the Xbox Store category page for online multiplayer and cross-platform co-op listed Sea of Thieves: 2025 Edition when accessed on October 8, 2026. That listing is an example for the category, not a guarantee covering every platform or edition. Check the current product and edition details before relying on it.

What do multiplayer survey figures tell you?
Unity’s 2025 report, based on a Cint survey of 300 respondents, says 99% reported building online multiplayer games. The same chart reports local multiplayer at 48%, couch co-op at 28%, asymmetrical multiplayer at 69%, and asynchronous multiplayer at 72%. These are reports from surveyed developers about what they were building—not the share of games sold, what players prefer, or a measure of the entire game industry. The categories can overlap, so they should not be added together. Unity’s 2025 report provides the survey context.
