If an online game will not connect, first check the game publisher’s official service status, then the platform’s status, and only after that troubleshoot your device, home network, and ISP. A reported outage or maintenance window makes a server-side fault likely; a failure limited to one device, one game, or one connection path points toward a narrower local problem. No single status page or speed test can identify every cause, so compare the problem’s scope, affected devices, connection type, and timing. This guide gives you a safe order of checks, explains what each result means, and shows when to wait, when to change a local setting, and when to contact game support or your internet provider.
Are the game servers down, or is the problem on my connection?
Use a layered diagnosis rather than guessing. A server incident usually has a broad footprint: many players report the same error, a publisher lists an outage or maintenance, or an entire platform is having trouble. A home-network problem is more likely when several services fail on your connection, multiple devices lose access, or Wi-Fi fails while a wired test works. Those are clues, not guarantees. A status page can lag behind an incident, and a single-game failure can still be caused by an account, update, NAT, firewall, or route issue.

Why can’t I connect to the game server? Start with the official game status
Open the game publisher’s official status page before restarting equipment or changing network settings. Look for an outage, scheduled maintenance, degraded service, or an incident affecting the particular game, platform, region, or feature you use. EA’s status page, for example, lists EA games and platform servers, while Steam Support explicitly places a Steam-status check before local network troubleshooting.
Check the exact service, not just the company homepage
A publisher can have its account system online while matchmaking, login, purchases, or a regional cluster is degraded. Read the incident description and its affected components. If the page distinguishes regions or platforms, match it to your setup. A green “online” indicator is a snapshot, not proof that every function is healthy; continue through the diagnostic sequence if your symptoms persist.

Recognize what an outage changes
If the publisher has acknowledged an incident, repeated router resets, DNS changes, port forwarding, or a factory reset will not repair the remote service. Record the time and error, follow the publisher’s updates, and retry after the incident changes state. Live status can change quickly, so check again if the symptom or the incident notice changes.
Could the platform or ISP be the part that is down?
Games often depend on more than the publisher. A console network, PC game platform, authentication service, or regional ISP can block access even when the game’s own status page is clear.

Use the platform named in the game’s support documentation. EA’s connection guidance directs players to check the relevant platform service, and Epic advises console players to check both its status page and their ISP for local outages or degradation. On a console, a platform incident can prevent sign-in or matchmaking across several games while the publisher’s servers remain operational.
Check the ISP before blaming the game
Look for an outage or maintenance notice from your internet provider, then ask support whether your address or area has a degradation event. This matters especially when several devices cannot reach unrelated online services. An ISP can also investigate recurring problems that do not appear as a complete outage.
What clues show whether the failure is shared or local?
Compare four evidence axes: scope, reach, connection path, and timing. They organize the official troubleshooting advice without pretending to be a formal diagnostic test.
Scope: one game, one platform, or many services?
If one title fails while other games and websites work, the fault domain is narrow. It may involve that title’s files, an update, account access, NAT or firewall restrictions, or the route to that service. If several unrelated online services fail simultaneously, a platform, router, or ISP incident becomes more plausible.

Reach: one device or several?
Test another device on the same home connection when practical. A failure confined to one PC or console points toward that device, its software, or its account. Failures on multiple devices shift attention to the router, Wi-Fi, or provider. This is an inference from the layered checks, not a guarantee: a shared account or platform incident can affect multiple devices too.
Connection path: Wi-Fi versus Ethernet
Steam Support recommends a direct wired test to determine whether Wi-Fi or powerline interference is involved, and EA also suggests trying a wired connection. If Ethernet works from the same router while Wi-Fi does not, investigate the wireless segment rather than buying a new router immediately. If both paths fail, the fault may be upstream, device-specific, or service-side.
Timing: constant, intermittent, or tied to an hour?
Note when the problem starts and stops. Steam advises testing at other hours and contacting the ISP if traffic shaping is suspected. A recurring time pattern can also reflect household congestion or an overloaded local access point; it does not establish that an ISP is deliberately shaping game traffic.
What should I do when the status pages look normal?
Work from reversible, low-risk checks toward narrower causes. Do not make several changes at once; otherwise you will not know which result mattered.
- Close and relaunch the game. Exit it fully rather than leaving it suspended, then start it again and retry the same activity. Capture the exact error text before it disappears.
- Restart the device. Reboot the PC or console, then confirm that it reconnects to the network before opening the game.
- Install pending updates. Check for game updates and operating-system or console updates. Version mismatches can affect login or matchmaking even when the service is healthy.
- Test another online service. Open a different game or service on the same device. This separates a title-specific symptom from a broader connectivity failure.
- Test another device on the same network. If the second device has the same problem, move your attention toward the router, Wi-Fi, platform, or ISP.
- Try a wired connection if available. Connect the device directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical diagnostic aid if you do not already have a suitable cable; it cannot fix a publisher outage or an ISP-side fault.
- Improve the wireless test. If Ethernet is not possible, move closer to the router, reduce obstructions, and retry. Treat a temporary improvement as evidence about the wireless link, not as proof that the game server is healthy.
How do I interpret the result of each test?
Only one game fails
Keep the investigation focused on that game. Check its current support page for account sign-in, update requirements, NAT or firewall restrictions, and known incidents. Rockstar’s GTA Online guidance, for example, lists NAT and router/firewall restrictions as possible factors while still directing players to check service status first. Do not copy port numbers or network settings from another title; those requirements vary by game and platform.
Several games fail on one device
Check the device’s network connection, system update state, platform sign-in, and any local firewall or security software that could block connections. If another device works normally on the same router, the problem is more likely confined to the original device or account.

Several devices fail on the same home network
Inspect the router’s connection indicators, reconnect the affected devices, and check the ISP for an outage or degradation. A shared failure across unrelated services is stronger evidence of a local or provider problem than a single-game error. Avoid a factory reset unless the router maker or ISP specifically directs it and you have recorded the settings you would need to restore.
Ethernet works and Wi-Fi does not
Focus on wireless interference, distance, congestion, and the access point. Keep the wired connection for play if practical while you troubleshoot Wi-Fi. The result does not identify whether the publisher, platform, or ISP would fail under a wired test; it only narrows the failing segment.
Both Ethernet and Wi-Fi fail, but status pages are clear
Compare another device and another online service, then contact the ISP if the broader connection is affected. If only one title remains broken, return to that game’s support process for account, update, NAT, firewall, or route-specific checks.
Can NAT, a firewall, or router settings block a game?
Yes. Game-specific support pages may identify restrictive NAT, router rules, or firewall behavior as causes of login or matchmaking failures. The exact remedy differs by title, platform, router, and network design.
Use the game’s current instructions
Read the publisher’s documentation for your specific game and platform before opening ports or changing NAT behavior. A setting that helps one title can be unnecessary or unsafe for another. If the support page asks you to collect a NAT type, error code, or connectivity test, provide those details rather than guessing at a configuration.
Why universal fixes are risky
Port forwarding, custom DNS, disabling firewall protections, and factory resets can create new problems and will not restore a service that is down remotely. Treat them as targeted, documented steps after status, updates, device checks, and connection-path tests have narrowed the cause.

When should I contact game support, platform support, or my ISP?
Escalate to the party that controls the failing layer, and include evidence that lets the next technician reproduce the problem.
Contact game support when
- The problem affects one game while other services work.
- The publisher’s status is clear but the same title continues to fail after updates and a device restart.
- You see an account, authentication, NAT, or game-specific error.
Contact platform support when
- The platform status page reports an incident.
- Multiple games on that platform cannot sign in or use online features.
- The platform account or console network test fails while other devices and services work.
Contact the ISP when
- Several devices and unrelated services fail on the same connection.
- The ISP reports an outage or degradation in your area.
- The problem recurs at particular hours or persists over both Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
Prepare a useful support report
Write down the exact error text, game and platform, the time the issue began, the region if relevant, which status pages you checked, which other services and devices you tested, and whether Ethernet changed the result. This record prevents support from repeating tests you already completed and helps distinguish a shared incident from a local fault.

- Do not keep rebooting the router for a confirmed publisher outage. It cannot repair a remote service.
- Do not assume a speed test settles the question. A speed result does not test every game server, authentication path, NAT condition, or platform dependency.
- Do not change several network settings at once. You lose the ability to identify the effective change and may make recovery harder.
- Do not generalize another game’s port or NAT instructions. Requirements differ across titles and platforms.
- Do not buy a replacement router as the first response. Establish whether the failure is wireless, local, provider-side, or service-side before spending money.
How reliable are status pages?
Status indicators are useful evidence, but they are not a complete diagnosis. They may show a broad service as operational while one region, platform, or feature is degraded, or they may update after players begin seeing failures. Check the relevant page again when symptoms change, and continue with device, network, and ISP checks when the game remains unreachable.

What is the fastest safe decision path?
- Check the game’s official status for your region, platform, and affected feature.
- Check the platform service and your ISP for incidents.
- Compare the failure across another game or service and another device.
- Restart the game and device, then install pending game and system updates.
- Compare Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet test.
- Use the pattern you found to choose game support, platform support, or ISP support.

Why does matchmaking fail while the game’s status page says it is online?
A status page may cover the publisher broadly while a regional cluster, platform dependency, or specific matchmaking component is degraded. Check the platform status and incident details, then record whether login, menus, and other online features behave differently.
Can a wired connection prove that my ISP is not the problem?
No. Ethernet only removes the Wi-Fi link from the test. If wired and wireless both fail across several devices or services, the router or ISP remains a plausible cause; if only one game fails, keep investigating that title.
Should I change DNS before contacting support?
