Seniors can stay safe online by building a few repeatable habits: lock every device, install updates automatically, use a different long passphrase for every account, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA), and pause before responding to unexpected messages or calls. Verify requests through a phone number or website you find yourself, not through details in the message. These steps protect email, banking, shopping, social media, and gaming accounts without requiring technical expertise. This U.S.-focused guide explains exactly what to turn on, how to spot a scam, and what to do if you clicked a link or shared information.

Why does online safety matter for seniors?

Online accounts contain money, medical and personal information, family contacts, photographs, and access to other services. A criminal who takes over one email account may use password resets to reach banking, shopping, retirement, or game accounts. The same risks affect people of every age; experience and a calm routine matter more than age.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) estimated in July 2025 that financial abuse against older adults costs about $27 billion each year in the United States. That estimate covers financial abuse broadly, including abuse by relatives or caregivers, so it is not an online-scam-loss figure. It does show why checking accounts and acting quickly when something looks wrong are worthwhile.

Most attacks rely on a rushed decision rather than a sophisticated hack. An unexpected text says a payment failed, a caller claims to be from a bank, or a game message offers a prize if you “verify” your account. A short pause and independent check can stop the loss.

How should I secure my phone, tablet, and computer?

Start with device-level protections because one locked, updated device can safeguard many accounts at once. CISA’s Online Safety Tips for Older Adults recommends locking devices, enabling automatic updates, and installing software only from trusted sources.

Use a screen lock

  • Set a strong passcode, PIN, fingerprint, or face unlock on every phone and tablet.
  • Use a password or PIN on computers, and set the screen to lock automatically after a short period of inactivity.
  • Do not leave an unlocked device unattended in a car, public place, or shared room.

A lock helps if a device is lost or stolen. It does not replace account passwords; someone who learns an account password could still sign in from another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on automatic updates

  1. Open your device’s Settings and look for Software Update, System Update, or Windows Update.
  2. Enable automatic operating-system updates and automatic updates for installed apps.
  3. Restart when prompted so an update can finish. If an update repeatedly fails, contact the device maker or a trusted support person rather than downloading an “update tool” from an unsolicited pop-up.

The FBI’s adult online-safety guidance also advises updating computers, phones, and apps. Updates can fix security weaknesses as well as add features.

Install apps only from trusted sources

Use the official app store built into your phone or tablet, or the software maker’s genuine website on a computer. Avoid programs offered through pop-ups, unexpected email attachments, or a caller who asks for remote access. Close a suspicious pop-up instead of calling a number displayed in it.

What makes a password or passphrase strong?

Use a long, random, unique password or passphrase for every account. CISA states: “Strong passwords are long (16+ characters), random and unique for each account.” Reusing a password lets one stolen login unlock several services.

Create and store unique credentials

  • Choose at least 16 characters where the service permits it. A sequence of unrelated words can be easier to type than a short string of symbols.
  • Never reuse the password for email on banking, shopping, social media, or a gaming platform.
  • Do not base passwords on publicly visible details such as a birthday, pet, address, favorite team, or grandchild’s name.
  • Use a reputable password manager to generate and remember credentials. Protect the manager with one strong master passphrase and MFA.

The Department of Labor’s online-security guidance mentions 14 or more characters while pointing readers toward NIST’s preference for longer passphrases instead of routine forced resets. The more specific CISA older-adult guidance uses 16 or more characters, so that is a useful general target. Change a password when you believe it has been exposed, when a service reports a breach, or when someone else has had access to it; constant calendar-based changes can encourage weaker choices.

Write recovery codes or emergency instructions down and store them in a secure place at home, not next to the device. A trusted person can help you keep a recovery plan without knowing every password.

Which type of multi-factor authentication should I use?

Turn on MFA for email, banking, retirement, shopping, utilities, social media, and gaming accounts whenever it is offered. MFA adds a second proof of identity after the password, so a stolen password alone is less useful.

MFA method How it works Practical considerations
Physical security key You insert or tap a hardware key after entering the password. CISA’s October 2025 campaign poster says, “A physical security key provides the best protection and is easy to use.” Check that each account and device supports the key, and keep a backup or recovery method.
Authenticator app or one-time code An app generates a temporary code, or the service sends a code. Keep the phone or app available and save the service’s recovery codes. Never read a code to an unsolicited caller or texter.
Fingerprint or face recognition Your device checks a biometric after you start a sign-in. Convenient on supported devices, but you still need a password and a recovery plan. Availability varies by account and device.
Passkey A device-based credential signs you in without typing a traditional password. The FBI says, “Some websites and apps now offer passkeys, which are safer than passwords.” Confirm that the service supports passkeys and understand how you will recover access if the device is lost.

A security key is not universal and no MFA method stops every impersonation attempt. The protection works only when you approve a legitimate sign-in; a scammer who persuades you to approve a prompt or disclose a code can still get in.

How do I enable MFA?

  1. Sign in by typing the service’s known address or using its official app.
  2. Open Account, Security, or Privacy settings and select Two-step verification, Two-factor authentication, or MFA.
  3. Choose the strongest method the service supports, register it, and save recovery codes offline.
  4. Sign out and test the process while you still have access. Add a second trusted method if the service allows it.

How can I recognize a phishing email, text, or game message?

Phishing is a deceptive request delivered by email, text, social media, in-game chat, or another messaging service. Treat urgency, unexpected links, attachments, payment requests, and demands for a verification code as warning signs, even when the message uses a real logo or a familiar name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Urgency: “Act in 10 minutes,” “your account will close,” or “a family member is in trouble.”
  • Unexpected money issue: a refund, invoice, gift card, prize, or failed payment you did not initiate.
  • Credential request: a request for your password, one-time code, Social Security number, or full card number.
  • Unusual link or attachment: a misspelled domain, shortened address, QR code, or file you were not expecting.
  • Pressure to keep secrets: a supposed official or relative says not to tell anyone or not to call back.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises looking at what the sender is asking you to do, not merely how professional the message looks. A genuine-looking logo or caller ID can be copied or spoofed.

What should I do with an unexpected message?

  1. Stop. Do not reply, click, open an attachment, scan a QR code, or use the message’s “unsubscribe” link.
  2. Open the organization’s official app or type its website address yourself. For a relative or friend, call a number already saved in your contacts.
  3. Ask whether the request is real. Do not use the phone number, email address, or link supplied in the suspicious message.
  4. If it is fraudulent, use the service’s spam or report control and delete it.

The FBI’s advice is direct: “When in doubt, go to the official website or contact customer support instead of using links in unsolicited emails or messages.”

How should I handle suspicious calls and AI-generated voices?

Use the same pause-and-verify rule for voice calls as for texts. A December 19, 2025 FBI public-service announcement describes campaigns in which criminals use text messages and AI-generated voice messages to impersonate officials, build rapport, and then request authentication codes, personal information, or money.

  • Hang up on an unexpected caller who asks for secrecy, a code, remote computer access, or an urgent transfer.
  • Call the person or organization back using a number you already trust or find independently.
  • Agree with family members on a private word or phrase that can confirm an emergency call is genuine.
  • Scrutinize phone numbers and web addresses. A familiar voice, photograph, or video is not proof of identity because AI-generated content can be difficult to identify.

Never share a login verification code with someone who contacted you first, even if they claim to be from technical support, a bank, a delivery company, or a government office.

How can I protect my privacy on social media and in games?

Share less personal information publicly and review privacy settings on social profiles, game networks, and messaging apps. Information that seems harmless in a profile can help someone guess security answers or impersonate you.

  • Hide your birth date, home address, travel plans, phone number, and answers to common security questions.
  • Limit who can send direct messages, invite you to a game, see your friends list, or view your posts.
  • Do not post photographs of IDs, boarding passes, bills, account screens, or documents containing numbers.
  • Use a separate email address for gaming or public communities when practical, while keeping your primary email private.
  • In voice or text chat, do not disclose your password, one-time code, payment details, or location. Block and report users who pressure or threaten you.

A service asking for information does not automatically need all of it. If a game, forum, or social app requests a phone number, contacts, or identity document, read its privacy explanation and decide whether the feature is worth the disclosure.

Is public Wi-Fi safe for banking and shopping?

Use your home Wi-Fi or cellular data for banking, retirement, shopping, and other sensitive activity. The FBI and Department of Labor both caution against using free public Wi-Fi for these tasks.

Secure the home connection

  • Change the router’s default administrator password and use a long Wi-Fi password.
  • Install router firmware updates when the manufacturer provides them.
  • Use the encrypted network shown in your router’s instructions, rather than an open guest network for account management.

If you must use public Wi-Fi, avoid signing in to financial accounts, use cellular data instead when possible, and do not assume a network is genuine just because its name resembles a café, hotel, or library.

How often should I check bank, card, and retirement accounts?

Review financial accounts regularly and enable transaction or login alerts where available. Prompt detection gives a bank or card issuer more opportunity to stop or reverse unauthorized activity.

  • Register retirement accounts and keep your email, phone, and mailing address current.
  • Review bank, card, and retirement statements for unfamiliar withdrawals, transfers, beneficiaries, or contact changes.
  • Close unused accounts and remove old payment methods from shopping and gaming services.
  • Contact the financial institution immediately through the number on a statement or card if activity looks suspicious.

The FDIC advises promptly reporting suspicious activity to the financial institution. The Department of Labor also recommends monitoring retirement accounts and avoiding free Wi-Fi for sensitive tasks.

What should I do if I clicked a link or opened an attachment?

Act promptly, but do not panic. The correct response depends on what happened: viewing a page is different from entering a password, approving MFA, downloading a file, or sending money.

If you only opened the page

  1. Close the browser tab without entering information or downloading anything.
  2. Update the device and its security software.
  3. Run a security scan, as the FTC recommends when a link or attachment may have installed malware.
  4. Watch for unusual pop-ups, new extensions, battery drain, or account alerts.

If you entered a password

  1. Use the genuine website or app to change that password immediately.
  2. Change the same password anywhere it was reused, starting with email.
  3. Sign out other sessions, remove unfamiliar devices, and enable MFA.
  4. Check email-forwarding rules and account recovery details for changes you did not make.

If you shared a code, card number, identity information, or money

  • Call the bank, card issuer, payment service, or game platform using a trusted contact method and explain exactly what was disclosed.
  • Ask whether transactions can be stopped, cards replaced, transfers recalled, or sessions revoked.
  • Go to IdentityTheft.gov for steps tailored to the personal information exposed.
  • Save messages, phone numbers, receipts, and screenshots for investigators. Do not continue communicating with the scammer.

If someone had remote access to your computer, disconnect it from the internet, contact a trusted technician or the device maker, and change passwords from a different, clean device.

Where can I report phishing or internet crime?

Reporting helps the relevant service and authorities identify patterns, even when no money was lost.

  • Forward a phishing text to SPAM (7726) and report phishing attempts at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, following FTC guidance.
  • After personal information is exposed, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan.
  • For internet crime, submit a report to the FBI’s IC3.gov or contact a local FBI field office.
  • Use the email, social-media, bank, and game service’s built-in report and block controls.

Reporting does not replace contacting a bank or changing a compromised password; do those urgent recovery steps first.

How can a trusted person help without taking over?

Choose a trusted family member, friend, caregiver, or professional adviser to be a second set of eyes. Assistance should preserve your control: you decide which accounts to share, and you should never be pressured to reveal a password or one-time code.

  • Review security settings together on a scheduled call or visit.
  • Create a written emergency plan listing official bank numbers, device makers, and where recovery codes are stored.
  • Practice verifying a suspicious message by opening the official app or calling a known number.
  • Use account features that provide delegated access or alerts instead of sharing credentials, where available.

For gaming accounts, a helper can show where privacy, purchase, and parental or communication controls are located without signing in as you. Keep payment approvals separate from public chat and never let a stranger “help” by requesting remote access.

What should my weekly online-safety routine include?

A short routine is easier to maintain than trying to fix every setting at once. Put these checks on a calendar or use a printed checklist.

  • Install pending phone, computer, router, and app updates.
  • Review recent bank, card, retirement, email, and gaming-account activity.
  • Confirm that MFA and recovery details still work.
  • Delete unused apps and close accounts you no longer need.
  • Review privacy settings after a major app or operating-system update.
  • Discuss a family verification phrase and the trusted person to call when a message creates urgency.

The goal is not to avoid the internet. It is to make the safe choice the automatic choice: lock devices, use unique long credentials, add MFA, verify independently, and report quickly when something goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a senior use online banking safely from a smartphone?

Yes, provided the phone is locked, updated, and protected with MFA on the bank account. Use the bank’s official app or type its address yourself, avoid public Wi-Fi for banking, and turn on transaction alerts. A trusted helper can review settings without receiving your password or verification codes.

What should I do if a caller says my computer has a virus?

Hang up unless you independently requested support. Do not install remote-access software, pay with gift cards or cryptocurrency, or provide a password or code. Contact the device maker or a known technician through a number you find yourself, then run updates and a security scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are password managers safe for older adults?

A reputable password manager can generate and store a different long password for each account, reducing reuse. Protect the manager with a strong master passphrase and MFA, save its recovery instructions securely, and learn its emergency-access options before you need them.

How can I tell whether a social-media friend request is genuine?

Check the profile through another channel and ask a question only the real person would know. Look for a new account, copied photos, an urgent money request, or pressure to move the conversation elsewhere. Do not send money, codes, or identity documents based solely on a profile or familiar-looking message.

What if a scammer knows my name and some family details?

That information may come from public profiles or a previous data leak and does not prove the caller is genuine. End the conversation, verify independently with your family or organization, review account activity, and change exposed credentials. Tell your contacts about the impersonation so they recognize follow-up messages.
