Before buying an open-world co-op game on Steam, confirm that it supports the exact way your group wants to play—not just that it has the “Open World” tag. Check the listed co-op feature, player cap, crossplay, copy requirements, who hosts the shared world, each player’s PC or Steam Deck compatibility, and the current refund terms. Those checks can prevent the most common mismatch: a game that sounds right but cannot bring your friends together on their devices, schedules, or preferred style of co-op.
What should I check first?
Start with the people who will actually play. A useful purchase decision depends less on a genre label than on whether everyone can join, has the right version and hardware, and can access the same world when they want to play.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- List the players and platforms. Note how many people need to play at the same time, what device and operating system each person uses, and whether anyone is buying from a store other than Steam.
- Agree on the co-op arrangement. Decide whether you need online co-op, local co-op, or remote access to a local co-op session. These are not interchangeable features.
- Decide how the world should work. If everyone plays at once, a session hosted by one player may be sufficient. If friends play at different times, find out whether a persistent world is supported and who will keep it available.
- Check each person’s purchase and hardware. Count game licenses separately from player slots, then compare every player’s system with the listing’s requirements.
- Review the current listing and terms before checkout. Verify the game’s current release status, regional price, edition and included content, recent player feedback, and refund conditions.
Use the individual game’s Steam Store page and developer guidance to verify each point. A tag or a single multiplayer label does not answer all of them.
Does “Open World” mean the game supports co-op?
No. “Open World” describes a store tag, not a specific multiplayer arrangement. Check the game’s listed features for the co-op mode your group needs.

On a game’s Store page, inspect its feature list for Online Co-op, Local Co-op, or Remote Play Together. Do not treat one as proof of another. Remote Play Together is for inviting friends into a supported local co-op session remotely; it does not, by itself, establish that the game supports ordinary online co-op.
Then read the description for what players do together and how the session works. If the page does not clearly answer whether friends can join online, whether they share progress, or whether a local session is required, check the developer’s own FAQ or support information before buying. Avoid assuming that an open map means players can freely join, leave, or progress independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAlso look for the features that matter to your group beyond simply connecting: supported controllers, text or voice communication, language options, and accessibility settings. If a feature is important to someone in the group, confirm it on the individual game listing or in official developer information rather than inferring it from screenshots or tags.
How many players can join, and how many copies do we need?
Check the advertised simultaneous player limit, then separately count the licenses needed for everyone to play at once. A game’s player cap does not tell you how many copies your group must own.
For two concrete examples, the 2026 Steam listings advertise Valheim for 1–10 players and Enshrouded for co-op with up to 16 players. These are game-specific listing figures, not a general rule for open-world games. Confirm the current listing for the title you are considering; a group larger than the stated cap will need to split up or choose another game.
Steam Families does not turn one purchased copy into multiple simultaneous licenses for the same game. Valve’s rule is that enough copies must be available for the number of family members who want to play that game at the same time. Therefore, work out both totals before checkout: the number of players the game supports and the number of usable copies your group needs.
Do not assume that buying a Steam copy also grants ownership on another store. A friend playing through a different storefront or platform needs a confirmed crossplay path, and ownership on one store does not automatically include a separate store’s edition.

Will our friends be able to play across different platforms?
Only rely on crossplay that the developer documents for the exact platform pair your group plans to use. “Multiplayer” on a Steam page does not prove that Steam players can join players on a console or another PC store.
Check the developer’s current instructions for the specific combination—such as Steam and Xbox—and note any conditions for joining. Valheim’s developer guidance, for example, describes join codes and a crossplay-enabled server condition for Xbox access. That is evidence for the documented Valheim setup, not a policy that can be applied to other games.
Before buying, have each player identify the exact edition or store version they will use. If the developer’s instructions are unclear about a platform pair, treat crossplay as unconfirmed rather than promising the group it will work. Recheck the guidance near purchase time because platform support and joining procedures can change.

Who controls the shared world when we are not all online?
Find out whether the world exists only while a player-host is active, whether a dedicated server is supported, and who is responsible for the world’s save. This is especially important when friends want to play at different times.
In a player-hosted session, access to the world may depend on that player starting a session. A dedicated server is a separate hosting option that can keep a world available to friends without relying on the host joining each time. The exact save, access, and setup arrangements vary by game, so verify them in the developer’s documentation; do not transfer one game’s hosting model to another.
Valheim’s developer documents both player-hosted peer-to-peer play and dedicated-server use. Iron Gate provides a dedicated-server tool and says it does not provide official servers. Groups considering that option should decide who will set it up, keep it running, and maintain the save. A dedicated server is not automatically necessary for co-op; it is a consideration for groups that need the world to persist or remain available on a different schedule.
Before committing to a shared save, agree on who can access it and how the group will handle the host’s absence. If the game’s official documentation does not make those rules clear, do not assume that a friend can continue the same world independently.

What kind of co-op experience does the group want?
Compare the activities and pace described by the game, not just the size of its map. “Open world” can cover different styles of exploration, building, combat, and survival.
Valheim’s store description emphasizes procedural survival and exploration. Enshrouded describes a handcrafted, terraformable world with building and combat. These descriptions are useful comparison axes, not a quality ranking or a promise that every player will enjoy the same activities.
Before buying, talk through a few practical questions:
- Does the group want to explore and build together, or would players prefer to split up?
- Are the expected activities primarily player-versus-environment, or does the group want player-versus-player conflict?
- Does the game’s description match the amount of survival, combat, construction, or exploration everyone wants?
- Can a player who misses a session catch up, and does the game explain how shared progress works?
Descriptions may not resolve questions about progression or how freely players can separate. Look for a direct developer answer before purchase if that issue could make the game unsuitable for your group.

Check every player’s device against the specific listing, not against a general impression that a game is “lightweight” or “well optimized.” At minimum, compare operating system, processor, graphics hardware, RAM, available storage, and network requirements for each PC.
The 2026 Steam listing for Enshrouded specifies 16 GB minimum RAM, 60 GB of available storage, broadband internet, and recommends an SSD. The 2026 Valheim listing specifies 8 GB minimum RAM for Windows, with operating-system requirements listed separately. These are examples of the differences that can matter between titles; use the current requirements for the game and platform each person will use.
For Steam Deck, check the game’s current compatibility details. Valve uses four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Read the per-title details rather than treating the category as a guarantee of a particular frame rate, multiplayer behavior, or fit for your group.

Do not buy an upgrade just because a game is co-op. If a player’s existing device meets the requirements and has enough free storage, no additional hardware follows from the co-op label. If a requirement is not met, resolve that person’s hardware situation before the group buys copies.

How should I check reviews, release status, and changing details?
Use the current Steam page and recent player discussions to assess the game as it exists now. Compare recent feedback with overall reviews, and look for reports related to your group’s actual concerns—such as connection problems, crossplay, or server access—instead of treating a changing review percentage as a durable statistic.
Check release status directly on the listing, especially if older search results or tags describe a game as Early Access. Steam listed Valheim’s full release as September 9, 2026, following Early Access beginning February 2, 2021; Enshrouded’s full release as October 15, 2026, following Early Access beginning January 24, 2024. Those dates are status checks for these examples, not a substitute for checking the current page of another game.
For a game that is still in Early Access, judge what is available now rather than treating a roadmap or future feature as an existing one. Look at the current description, update history, and relevant discussions. If the purchase only makes sense to your group after a promised feature arrives, wait until that feature is confirmed as available.
What should I verify at checkout?
Confirm the purchase details in each buyer’s own Steam storefront. Regional pricing, editions, and included downloadable content can vary, and a price seen in a search snippet may reflect another currency or a temporary promotion.
- Edition: Confirm which version each person is buying and what it includes.
- DLC: Check whether any add-on is required for the group’s planned content, and read the applicable refund conditions separately.
- Copies: Make sure there are enough licenses for simultaneous play; do not count a Family Sharing label as an extra concurrent copy.
- Refund window: Review Valve’s current policy before purchase. Its standard offer for a standalone game is a request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Valve may review requests outside those limits, but an exception is not guaranteed.
Valve’s refund policy says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” That sentence is not the full eligibility rule: the standard time and playtime limits still matter. Early Access playtime counts toward the limit. Valve cannot refund a game purchased as a third-party key, and DLC and bundles have distinct conditions. See Steam’s refund policy for the current terms.

What communication and control details can make co-op easier?
Confirm communication options and control support before assuming everyone can participate comfortably. A listing may identify controller support, while voice communication can be handled separately from in-game text.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Valheim have official servers?
No. Iron Gate says it does not provide official servers, although it documents a dedicated-server tool for players who want to host a persistent world. See the developer’s Valheim FAQ for its current guidance.
What does Steam Deck “Unknown” compatibility mean?
It is one of Valve’s four compatibility categories, alongside Verified, Playable, and Unsupported. Check the game’s individual compatibility details rather than treating Unknown as a promise that it will or will not suit a particular player.
Does Early Access time count toward Steam’s two-hour refund limit?
Yes. Valve says Early Access playtime counts toward the standard game-refund playtime limit. Its refund policy also explains separate conditions for other purchase types.
