Short answer: an unmodified, wired SNES or Super Famicom controller works reliably on a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer through an original-SNES-to-USB adapter. Connect the pad to the adapter, connect USB, confirm button presses in the operating system, then map the controls in your game or emulator. Raphnet documents its single-player V2 adapter as a driver-free USB HID joystick on those desktop systems. That same adapter is not a supported direct solution for Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 3, 4, or 5, and no complete adapter-and-bridge chain for Switch 2 or Xbox Series is established here. For a modern console, use a separate wireless SNES-style controller or a documented wireless modification rather than assuming a USB plug will work.
What controller do you actually have?
Before buying an original SNES controller to USB adapter, identify the pad and its plug. Nintendo has sold several SNES-shaped controllers that are not electrically interchangeable.

| SNES Classic Edition pad | Separate product made for Nintendo’s miniature console | Do not assume its connector or wiring matches an original SNES pad |
| Nintendo wireless SNES controller | Modern wireless accessory for Switch systems | It does not convert an old wired controller; it is a replacement |
Raphnet lists SNS-005, SHVC-005 and SNSP-005 among the original controllers compatible with its V2 adapter (manufacturer compatibility list). Nintendo explicitly says its Switch wireless controller and the SNES Classic Edition controller “are not interchangeable” (Nintendo support). Treat those as separate products, not interchangeable names for the same pad.
For kits that modify a controller, 8BitDo distinguishes an “Original” port (the long, flat plug used by original-style controllers) from a “Classic” port (short and narrow). That distinction applies to the company’s own kits; it is not proof that every third-party adapter accepts every SNES-shaped plug. Compare the plug and the adapter’s stated model support before purchase.

How do I use an original SNES controller on a PC?
Use a one-port SNES/SFC-to-USB adapter that presents the controller as a standard USB HID joystick. Raphnet’s V2 adapter is documented as driver-free on Windows, Linux and macOS, so the normal process is connect, verify in the operating system, and map in the game.
What you need
- An original wired SNS-005, SHVC-005 or SNSP-005 (or another model explicitly listed by the adapter maker).
- A single-port adapter with an original SNES/SFC controller socket and USB output.
- A computer running Windows, Linux or macOS and a game or emulator that accepts joystick input.
- A free USB port. If the adapter uses a detachable cable, use a data-capable USB cable rather than a charge-only lead.
Connect the hardware
- Turn off the game or emulator so it cannot capture the wrong input device during startup.
- Insert the SNES controller plug fully into the adapter’s controller socket. Do not force a plug that is a different shape.
- Connect the adapter’s USB lead to the computer. Raphnet describes the V2 as a standard USB HID joystick using the host operating system’s normal drivers (Raphnet V2 specifications).
- Wait for the operating system to finish adding the device. No special Raphnet adapter driver is required on the listed desktop systems.
Verify every button before opening the game
Testing at the operating-system level separates a wiring or adapter problem from a game’s configuration problem.
- Windows: press
Win+R, enterjoy.cpl, select the newly listed joystick, choose Properties, and use the Test tab. Press the D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start and Select and confirm that each input changes. - Linux: Raphnet documents
jstestandevtestfor checking joystick events. Run the tool against the device shown by your distribution and watch the button numbers change as you press the pad (Raphnet testing instructions). - macOS: use the controller panel supplied by your game, emulator or a trusted HID-inspection utility to confirm that the device appears and produces events. The adapter is documented as a USB HID device for macOS, but individual games decide how they expose mapping.
If one button never registers in the operating-system test, fix the physical connection, try another USB port, and inspect the controller cable and membrane before changing in-game settings. If all buttons work in the OS but not in the game, the adapter is communicating; select the correct device in the game’s input menu and map each control manually.
Map the controls in a game or emulator
- Open the title’s Input, Controller or Configure menu.
- Choose the USB joystick by its detected name. A one-port adapter normally appears as one independent joystick.
- Assign the D-pad directions first, then A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start and Select. Press and release each button once when prompted so the mapping does not capture a held input.
- Save the profile for that game or console core. Many emulators store mappings per system, so a profile for SNES may not automatically apply to another core.
- Run a short menu check: move in all four directions, open a menu with Start, and verify that Select and both shoulder buttons perform the expected actions.
Some modern PC games accept only XInput-style controllers. A USB HID/DirectInput-style joystick can work in emulators and in games that expose generic joystick mapping, but an XInput-only title may ignore it or require that game’s own remapping layer. Do not interpret an absent device in one title as evidence that the adapter is defective.
Can I connect two original SNES controllers to one PC?
Yes, but you need an adapter with two controller sockets that exposes two independent joysticks. A second SNES pad plugged into a one-player adapter cannot create a second USB input.

Raphnet’s documented two-player V2 model presents two separate HID joysticks to Windows, Linux and macOS (dual-adapter documentation). Connect one original controller to each socket, confirm that two devices appear in the operating system, and assign player one and player two separately in the game or emulator.
- Connect both SNS-005, SHVC-005 or SNSP-005 pads to the dual adapter.
- Connect the adapter to USB and wait for both joystick entries to appear.
- Open the game’s multiplayer or input menu and assign the first joystick to player one and the second to player two.
- Test Start and Select on each pad independently; swapped player assignments are a configuration issue, not a need for a different cable.
A dual adapter is the straightforward choice for local two-player PC play. A single-port adapter plus a passive splitter is not equivalent, because a splitter does not create two independently enumerated USB HID devices.
Does a SNES-to-USB adapter work on Nintendo Switch?
Not the Raphnet adapter documented here. Raphnet’s product FAQ states that the Switch does not support its USB adapters, and the same product page lists PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 as unsupported (Raphnet compatibility notes). That is a statement about Raphnet’s adapters, not proof that every USB product or every bridge combination fails.
Switch compatibility depends on the complete chain: the original controller, the SNES-to-USB electronics, any translation bridge, its firmware, the console’s USB and authentication behavior, and the game’s controller support. No end-to-end original-controller/USB-adapter/bridge route for Switch, Switch 2, PS5 or Xbox Series is established by the documented sources here. A generic USB plug, a charging cable or a product designed to accept wireless pads is not evidence of a working path.
What can you use on Switch instead?
Nintendo sells a separate wireless Super Nintendo Entertainment System Controller documented for Switch and Switch 2. It is a replacement controller, not an adapter for your wired SNS-005, and Nintendo positions it for classic-game use; purchasing it requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership in the cited support information (Nintendo support details). Nintendo specifies approximately 20 hours of play per charge for that wireless controller. Other Switch games may not support every classic-controller function, so check the individual game’s requirements.

Can a wireless modification keep the original shell?
8BitDo’s Original Kit is a modification route for wireless play with a compatible original-style controller on Switch and the listed PC platforms. Choose the Original version rather than the Classic version when the controller has the original long, flat connector. The kit changes the controller’s electronics, so it no longer counts as an unmodified wired pad.
The kit’s external cable is for charging only, not wired play, according to its FAQ (8BitDo kit FAQ). The cited FAQ does not establish Switch 2 support for this kit, so verify the current compatibility statement before buying for that console. Installation also requires opening the controller and checking physical fit; it is not a plug-in USB adapter.
What about a SNES Retro Receiver?
A SNES Retro Receiver is the reverse direction: it accepts a compatible wireless controller and plugs into an original SNES console. It does not turn an original wired SNES controller into a Switch or PC controller, so it is the wrong purchase for this task (Raphnet’s direction and compatibility explanation).
Is a SNES-to-USB conversion board different from an adapter?
Yes. A conversion circuit may be installed inside a controller or assembled as a DIY project, while an external adapter is a ready-made cable-and-socket device. The documented destination for a SNES/SFC USB conversion circuit is Windows, Linux and macOS PC use; it is not a universal console bridge.
Choose a conversion board only if you are comfortable opening the controller, soldering or following the board maker’s wiring plan, and accepting that the original electronics may be altered. For a reversible setup, keep the controller unmodified and use an external original-SNES-to-USB adapter.

What latency and software details matter?
Raphnet lists a default total latency of 6 ms and a minimum setting of 2 ms for its named V2 adapter. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results, and they describe the adapter setting rather than a measured study of every original controller or game. The same product page should be checked for the current configuration procedure and supported modes.
Raphnet’s Adapter Manager page lists version 2.1.34 dated March 25, 2026. That entry documents the support tool listing; it is not evidence of an SNES-specific firmware release or a new latency measurement (Adapter Manager listing).
For ordinary menu navigation and emulation, the important practical checks are event registration, correct mapping and stable USB connection. A lower adapter-latency setting cannot repair a missing button, an incompatible game input API or a loose controller plug.

| Route | Keeps your controller unmodified? | Documented destination | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-port original-SNES-to-USB adapter | Yes | Windows, Linux, macOS PC | One-player games and emulators | Raphnet’s cited model is not supported directly on Switch or PS3/PS4/PS5 |
| Dual-port original-SNES-to-USB adapter | Yes | Windows, Linux, macOS PC | Two local players | Requires two controllers; each appears as a separate joystick |
| SNES/SFC USB conversion circuit | Depends on the build | Windows, Linux, macOS PC | DIY internal conversion | Not a ready-made universal console bridge |
| 8BitDo Original Kit | No; it modifies the controller | Switch and listed PC platforms | Wireless play while retaining a compatible shell | External cable charges only; Switch 2 support is not established by the cited FAQ |
| Nintendo wireless SNES controller | No; it replaces the old controller | Switch and Switch 2 | Supported wireless classic-controller experience | It does not connect your original wired pad; Nintendo describes classic-game use |
The simplest decision is therefore destination-first: choose the external USB adapter for a computer, the dual version for two PC players, and a separate wireless controller or documented modification for Switch. Do not buy a reverse-direction receiver or assume that a USB bridge is supported without a manufacturer statement for the exact hardware chain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check when the controller does not work?
The computer does not list a joystick
- Unplug and reconnect the USB side, then try another USB port.
- Reseat the SNES plug and confirm that the adapter explicitly supports the controller model.
- On Windows, reopen
joy.cpl; on Linux, inspect the device withjstestorevtest. - Try a known data-capable USB cable if the adapter uses a detachable lead.
The joystick appears but buttons are wrong
- Clear the game’s old profile and map from scratch in the game’s input menu.
- Check whether the title expects XInput rather than generic HID/DirectInput-style input.
- Map D-pad directions as a hat or digital buttons according to what the game’s configuration screen reports.
- Make sure no keyboard-mapping utility or second controller is capturing the same buttons.
Only one of two players works
- Confirm that you bought a dual-port adapter rather than a one-port model with a passive splitter.
- Verify that two independent joystick entries appear in the operating system.
- Assign each joystick to a different player slot and test Start/Select separately.
The request is for Switch or PlayStation
Stop treating PC success as console compatibility. Raphnet’s cited adapter is explicitly unsupported on Switch and listed PlayStation consoles; use a supported wireless replacement or a modification whose manufacturer names the exact target system. For Xbox Series and newer console bridges, require an end-to-end compatibility statement before spending money.

How to keep the original pad usable on its original console
An external USB adapter leaves the controller itself unmodified. Disconnect it from the adapter and reconnect it to the original SNES or Super Famicom whenever you want to play on original hardware. A conversion board or wireless kit changes that reversibility, so document the controller model and keep its original parts if you choose a modification.
Store the controller cable without sharp bends, keep the plug clean and avoid pulling the adapter by its wire. These are care practices rather than compatibility guarantees, but they reduce the chance that a mechanical cable fault is mistaken for a software problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow this guide distinguishes the choices
The recommendations above separate three questions that are often conflated: whether the controller is an original wired model, whether the destination is a computer or a console, and whether the controller remains unmodified. The PC adapter route is based on documented USB HID support and operating-system testing instructions; the console alternatives are kept separate because their hardware, firmware and compatibility claims differ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will an original SNES controller work with a USB-C laptop?
Yes, if the laptop’s USB-C port accepts the adapter through a suitable data adapter or hub. The SNES pad still connects to an original-SNES-to-USB adapter first; USB-C changes the computer-side connector, not the controller’s wiring.
Can I use the same adapter with a Super Famicom controller?
A compatible adapter should name the Japanese SHVC-005 explicitly. Raphnet lists that model, along with North American SNS-005 and PAL SNSP-005, but unlisted third-party variants should be confirmed with the seller before purchase.
Why does my emulator see a joystick but not the SNES button names?
Generic HID devices often arrive as numbered buttons and axes rather than labels such as A or B. Map the physical buttons manually, save the emulator profile, and avoid relying on the order another game assigned to the same device.
