Orion Backgammon says you can verify the dice rolls in a completed server game: it commits to a secret seed before the first roll, reveals that seed after the game, and lets you recompute the rolls from the game ID. That can help show whether rolls were changed after the commitment. It does not prove that every part of the app or game is fair.
How Orion’s dice check works
Orion describes the process as a commitment-and-reveal check. Before play, the server publishes a SHA-256 hash of a secret seed. The hash is a commitment: it lets the server later show that it used the seed it had committed to without revealing the seed before the game.

During the game, Orion says it derives rolls from that seed and each roll’s position using HMAC-SHA256. According to the app’s explanation, the game state, score, doubling cube and player are not inputs to that calculation. After the game, the seed is revealed so the rolls can be recomputed and compared with the game record.

- Get the game ID. Orion’s verifier asks for the ID of the completed game you want to check.
- Enter it in Orion’s verifier. The verifier runs in your browser and replays the check for that game.
- Review the result. The check compares the revealed seed with the pre-game commitment and recomputes the rolls. A match is evidence that the rolls correspond to the committed seed and roll positions.
This check applies to a completed game. The seed is revealed afterward, not before the first roll.

What a successful check establishes—and what it does not
A successful recomputation supports a specific claim: the recorded rolls are consistent with a seed whose hash Orion says it committed to before play. That makes changing the rolls after making the commitment detectable, assuming the published commitment and game record are the ones being checked.
It is not a general proof that the game is fair. It does not establish that the seed was generated through a truly random physical process, independently certify Orion’s deployed system, or verify every other part of the app. Orion’s own verifier describes the distinction this way: “Provable fairness proves the dice were not tampered with, which is a narrower and more honest claim than ‘the game is fair’ in general.” That is the company’s characterization of its feature, not an independent audit finding.

Online verification versus visible physical rolls
These approaches address different trust questions. Orion’s verifier gives a way to check the recorded rolls in a completed online match against the app’s described commitment mechanism. In an over-the-board game, players can see the dice being rolled directly; that does not verify an Orion online match.

| Approach | What you can check | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Orion’s post-game verifier | Whether the revealed seed matches the stated commitment and whether rolls recompute from that seed and their positions. | Whether every aspect of the service is fair or the deployed process has been independently audited. |
| Physical play with visible dice | Players can witness the rolls as they happen. | It does not validate the rolls in an online Orion game. |
A physical backgammon set is an option for players who prefer to see dice rolled in person, but it is not required to use Orion or verify a completed match.

Is Orion Backgammon rigged?
The available description does not establish that Orion is rigged, nor does it independently prove that the whole service is fair. It does describe a narrower mechanism players can use to check whether a completed game’s rolls are consistent with a seed committed to before play. Orion is published by Arthea, LLC and made by Arthea GameLab; its official page says it is free to play on iPhone, iPad and Android.
