To train Slayer in Old School RuneScape, get a monster assignment from a Slayer master, then complete it for Slayer experience and progress through the skill. There is no single best 1–99 route: fast experience, profit, and lower-attention play are different goals, and the right master and tasks depend on your account’s combat level, Slayer level, unlocks, supplies, and tolerance for risk.
How the Slayer training loop works
- Choose an eligible Slayer master. Masters assign tasks, and the suitable choice depends partly on your combat level and progression. Check the current requirements in the game or a live reference before planning around a particular master.
- Receive and complete the assignment. Kill the assigned number of the specified monster. Some monsters require special equipment, so confirm the task’s requirements before travelling.
- Decide whether to keep, skip, or block tasks. Task management lets you avoid assignments that do not fit your goals, but skipping and blocking use Slayer points. Check the current in-game costs and rules before spending points.
- Build your streak and earn points. Completing assignments advances task streaks and earns Slayer points. Points can be spent on rewards such as unlocks and task management; consult current game references for milestone bonuses and costs, which can change.
Slayer XP comes from completing assigned monster kills, so the practical route is shaped by which tasks your account can access and how efficiently you can complete them—not simply by choosing the highest-level master or the most popular task list.
Choose a route by your priority
| Priority | Typical approach | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Slayer XP | Favor tasks and methods that increase kill speed; some approaches use a cannon or burst-capable combat setups. | These methods can require supplies, unlocked content, and more active play. Exact task rankings and XP rates are not established here. |
| Profit | Favor assignments with worthwhile drops and account-appropriate combat methods. | Loot potential is not guaranteed, and a profitable task may be slower or require more attention than an XP-focused alternative. |
| Lower-attention play | Favor tasks and combat methods that let you spend less time actively managing each kill. | Lower-attention options can sacrifice XP pace or profit; the best fit depends on available gear and task access. |
These are broad route priorities, not definitive task rankings. A cannon or burst route is useful only when its requirements, costs, and task suitability work for your account.
Pick a Slayer master for your account
Master choice affects which assignments you can receive and the shape of your progression. Before switching masters, verify their current combat and Slayer requirements, then consider whether their task pool fits your priority. A higher-level master is not automatically better for every player: an assignment that is difficult, expensive, or poorly suited to your gear may slow your actual progress.

- Check access first: make sure your combat level and other progression meet the master’s current requirements.
- Consider task fit: think about whether you can complete likely assignments efficiently and safely.
- Protect your point plan: task streaks and Slayer points are part of progression, so weigh the value of completing an assignment against the cost of managing it.
Manage points, skips, and blocks deliberately
Slayer points support rewards such as unlocks and task management. Skipping or blocking assignments can make a route more consistent with your goals, but spending points too freely can leave fewer available for other rewards. Decide which unlocks or task-management options matter to your account before committing points, and verify current costs and rules in-game.
There is no evidence-backed universal block list for every 1–99 account. A task that is inefficient for a speed-focused player may still suit someone seeking drops or a less demanding session. Build your list around your own priorities and access rather than copying a list without checking its assumptions.
Gear and special equipment
Use combat equipment suited to the assigned monster, and check whether the task requires a special item before setting out. A Slayer helmet is an in-game item relevant to on-task training; it is virtual equipment, not a physical product recommendation. Because equipment availability and setup depend on account unlocks and task choice, this guide does not prescribe one universal gear loadout.
- Confirm special equipment requirements for the assignment.
- Match your combat method to your route: faster methods may consume supplies or require more active input.
- Consider survivability and risk as well as damage speed, especially when an assignment is unfamiliar.
Plan your 1–99 progression without relying on stale tables
Exact level gates, task weights, task XP, task streak bonuses, and optimal block lists can change or depend on account circumstances. Verify current requirements and values in a live game reference before using a detailed route table or calculating an XP timeline. In the meantime, use a simple planning cycle: confirm the master you can access, choose a priority, check the task’s requirements and likely costs, then decide whether to complete it or spend points to manage it.

Keep reassessing as your combat level, Slayer level, unlocks, and supplies change. A method that is unavailable or too costly early on may become practical later; equally, a route chosen for convenience may not be the fastest way to reach 99.
