Microsoft’s Classic Outlook connectivity troubleshooter is the correct first automated check when classic Outlook for Windows intermittently loses contact with the mail server. It runs through the Get Help app, requires Windows 10 or later, and must run on the same PC as classic Outlook. It does not apply to new Outlook for Windows. For a single-user failure, check your internet connection, mailbox limits, Outlook status, profile, and updates in that order. If several people lose connectivity at once, treat the incident as a possible Microsoft 365 service problem and have an administrator run the Outlook User Connectivity diagnostic and review Service health.
What is the Outlook connectivity troubleshooter?
The Outlook connectivity troubleshooter is a Microsoft Get Help workflow for diagnosing intermittent connection failures in classic Outlook for Windows. Microsoft describes Get Help as a collection of troubleshooters for common classic-Outlook scenarios. The connectivity workflow is intended for situations in which Outlook repeatedly loses contact with the mail server, shows a disconnected state, or cannot reliably send and receive.

The tool is part of a wider set of Get Help diagnostics. Depending on the symptom, Microsoft also provides troubleshooters for profile setup, startup, authentication, advanced diagnostics, and calendar problems. Selecting the workflow that matches the symptom matters: a connection diagnostic is not a substitute for an authentication or profile-setup check.
Requirements and limits
- Use classic Outlook for Windows, not new Outlook for Windows.
- Use Windows 10 or a later Windows release.
- Run Get Help on the same Windows computer where classic Outlook is installed.
- The diagnostic is software-based; it does not require a router, cable, or other physical product.
Microsoft’s connection guidance, last updated June 25, 2025, identifies outdated software and a corrupted Outlook profile as two of the most common causes of failed sending and receiving. The Outlook resource index was updated January 6, 2026, and points to additional guidance for Exchange Online connection failures, slow performance, Auto Account Setup, repeated password prompts, free/busy problems, and mobile-device configuration.

How do I tell whether I have classic Outlook or new Outlook?
Confirming the client is the first decision because the classic Outlook Get Help troubleshooters do not run in new Outlook. The two Windows apps can look similar while supporting different diagnostic paths.
| Check | Classic Outlook for Windows | New Outlook for Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Get Help connectivity troubleshooter | Supported for the documented classic-Outlook scenarios | Not applicable |
| Operating-system requirement for the troubleshooter | Windows 10 or later | Not applicable |
| Computer requirement | Get Help runs on the same PC as classic Outlook | Use new-Outlook support and account controls instead |
| Typical status clues covered by this guide | Disconnected, Working Offline, and Trying to connect… | Use the new-Outlook support path for its own connection symptoms |
If you are unsure which app is open, look at the application you launched and its account interface rather than assuming that an Outlook icon identifies the edition. If the classic diagnostic refuses to run, recheck the client before trying to force it; incompatibility is expected when the new app is installed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What do “Disconnected,” “Working Offline,” and “Trying to connect…” mean?
In classic Outlook, these labels appear in the status bar when the client cannot reach the mail server. They are useful clues, not separate diagnoses.
- Disconnected: Outlook has lost its connection to the server.
- Working Offline: Outlook is operating without an active server connection, whether because offline mode was selected or because connectivity is unavailable.
- Trying to connect…: Outlook is attempting to establish contact but has not completed the connection.
Start by determining whether the failure is local to one computer or affects multiple people. A browser test, mailbox check, and status-bar observation help separate an internet or local-profile problem from a service incident.
How do I fix Outlook connectivity problems step by step?
Follow these checks in sequence. Stop when the connection is stable, but keep notes about what changed if the problem returns.

1. Verify that the computer is online
Open a browser and load several ordinary websites. If pages do not load, fix the Windows or network connection before troubleshooting Outlook. A successful browser test does not prove that Exchange Online is healthy, but it rules out a basic loss of internet access.
2. Read Outlook’s synchronization state
In classic Outlook, inspect the status bar while the problem is occurring. Record whether it says Disconnected, Working Offline, or Trying to connect… and whether the message changes after a short wait. A persistent label indicates that Outlook still cannot reach the mail server and justifies the next checks.
3. Check mailbox storage and the outgoing queue
Microsoft notes that a full Microsoft cloud storage account can prevent both sending and receiving. Also inspect the Outbox for a message with a large attachment. One oversized message can block that message and subsequent queued messages, making the failure look like a general connectivity outage. Remove or revise the blocking message according to your organization’s retention and attachment rules, then test with a small message.
4. Run the Classic Outlook connectivity troubleshooter
Open the Windows Get Help app and launch the Classic Outlook connectivity troubleshooter for an intermittent connection problem. Allow it to complete its automated checks and apply any offered correction. The workflow is designed for classic Outlook on the same Windows PC; it cannot diagnose new Outlook for Windows.
Choose a different Get Help workflow when the symptom points elsewhere. Profile setup, startup, authentication, advanced-diagnostics, and calendar troubleshooters address different failure classes. Running a connection check for a repeated password prompt, for example, may not address the underlying authentication problem.

5. Repair the Outlook profile
A damaged profile can stop Outlook from sending or receiving even when the internet works. In Outlook, use this exact path:
- Select File.
- Choose Account Settings, then Account Settings again.
- On the Email tab, select the affected account.
- Choose Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Outlook and test sending and receiving.
The Repair command is documented for Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, Outlook 2021, Outlook 2019, and Outlook 2016 in Microsoft’s profile-repair guidance. Microsoft specifically notes that Repair is unavailable for Outlook 2016 when it connects to Exchange, so the missing command in that configuration is a documented limitation rather than evidence that you selected the wrong menu.
6. Install current Windows and Microsoft 365 updates
Use Windows Update and install available updates so Outlook and the other Microsoft 365 desktop applications are current. Out-of-date software is one of the common causes Microsoft lists for sending and receiving failures. Restart Windows after updates when prompted, then reopen Outlook and check its status bar.
7. Test again with a controlled message
After a repair or update, send a short message without a large attachment and confirm that a new message arrives. Testing without an attachment removes the queue blockage described above and makes it easier to tell whether the connection itself has recovered.

Several affected users, especially in the same organization, point away from a single damaged profile and toward an Exchange Online or Microsoft 365 service issue. A local browser connection can still work during a service incident because ordinary websites and the mail service are separate systems.

What an administrator can do
- Sign in with a Microsoft 365 administrator account.
- Run Run Tests: Outlook User Connectivity to diagnose the affected user or users.
- Open Microsoft 365 Service health and check the Exchange Online service status at the time of the incident.
- Compare the service-health information with the start time and scope reported by users.
The Outlook User Connectivity diagnostic requires a Microsoft 365 administrator account. Microsoft states that it is unavailable for Microsoft 365 Government, Microsoft 365 operated by 21Vianet, and Microsoft 365 Germany. Service-health information is live, so an administrator should check it during the outage rather than rely on an earlier status report.
Which fix should I try first: Get Help or profile repair?
Use the automated diagnostic first when the failure is intermittent and the account appears correctly configured. Use profile repair when the connection problem persists on one computer or the profile itself is suspected.
| Option | Best fit | Who can run it | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Outlook connectivity troubleshooter | Intermittent classic-Outlook connection loss | Standard user on the affected PC | Windows 10 or later; same PC; classic Outlook only |
| Profile Repair | One account that cannot reliably send or receive | Outlook user | Unavailable for Outlook 2016 connected to Exchange |
| Run Tests: Outlook User Connectivity | Administrator-led diagnosis, especially when multiple users are affected | Microsoft 365 administrator | Unavailable in the listed Government, 21Vianet, and Germany environments |
| Microsoft 365 Service health | Checking for a current Exchange Online incident | Microsoft 365 administrator | Status changes with the live service |
What if Outlook still will not send or receive?
Use the symptom and scope to choose the next branch rather than repeatedly running the same check.
- Only one computer is affected: repeat the browser and mailbox checks, run the classic connectivity workflow, repair the profile when available, and install updates.
- One message and everything behind it is stuck: inspect the Outbox for a large attachment and test after addressing that message.
- Several users are affected: have an administrator run Outlook User Connectivity and check Exchange Online Service health.
- The issue is a password prompt, account setup failure, calendar availability problem, or mobile configuration problem: use the matching Microsoft Outlook or Exchange Online guidance rather than treating it as a generic connectivity failure.
- The app is new Outlook: do not expect the classic Get Help workflow to apply; use the support controls for the new client.
Microsoft’s broader Outlook connection resources include separate guidance for Exchange Online connection failures, poor performance, Auto Account Setup, repeated password prompts, free/busy, and mobile-device configuration. Selecting the resource that matches the symptom prevents a profile repair from masking an account or service problem.
What should I record before escalating the problem?
A concise incident record helps an administrator distinguish a local fault from a service event. Note the Outlook edition, Windows version, exact status-bar wording, time the failure began, whether browser pages loaded, whether the mailbox was full, whether a large attachment was queued, and whether other users were affected. Include the result of the Get Help diagnostic, profile repair, and Windows Update, but do not repeatedly change settings after the connection returns unless the diagnostic recommends it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the classic Outlook connectivity troubleshooter work on macOS or a phone?
No. The documented workflow is for classic Outlook running on Windows 10 or later, with Get Help on that same Windows PC. The available data does not establish an equivalent Mac or mobile workflow, so those clients require their platform-specific Outlook support path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan a normal Outlook user check Microsoft 365 Service health?
Service health is an administrator-facing check in this workflow. If you do not have a Microsoft 365 administrator account, give your administrator the failure time, status-bar message, and affected-user count so they can check the live Exchange Online status.
Why might the Repair button be missing from Account Settings?
The clearest documented exception is Outlook 2016 connected to Exchange, where Microsoft says Repair is unavailable. A missing command can therefore reflect that product and connection combination rather than a failed repair attempt.
What information does Microsoft publish about Outlook outage rates?
The cited Microsoft material does not publish an authoritative failure percentage, resolution rate, or affected-user count for Outlook connectivity problems. Treat each incident according to its symptoms and scope instead of relying on an assumed probability.
