When Outlook cannot connect to Yahoo Mail, first prove whether Yahoo itself works, then separate an Outlook offline or network problem from an authentication problem. Sign in to Yahoo Mail in a browser and send a test message to the same address. If that fails, recover the Yahoo account before changing Outlook. If webmail works, turn off Outlook’s Work Offline status, verify the current IMAP and SMTP settings, and reauthenticate with Yahoo OAuth or an app password as required. Classic Outlook users should also check the 2026 Yahoo sync incident and refresh stored OAuth credentials before deleting the account.
What should I check first when Outlook cannot connect to Yahoo Mail?
Start outside Outlook. This single test tells you whether the failure is in the Yahoo account or in the desktop client.

- Open Yahoo Mail in a browser and sign in with the account you use in Outlook.
- Send a message to that same Yahoo address and confirm that it arrives.

- If both browser tests succeed, continue with Outlook and local network checks.
Use the result as a decision point. A failed browser test indicates a Yahoo-side account issue; a successful browser test means the Yahoo credentials work and the remaining problem is usually Outlook’s state, server configuration, saved credentials, or the connection between Outlook and Yahoo.
Is Outlook offline or is the network blocking the connection?
A perfectly configured account still cannot synchronize while classic Outlook is offline or the computer has no usable internet route.

Classic Outlook
- Look at the status bar. If it says Working Offline, open the Send/Receive tab and select Work Offline to turn the mode off.
- Open a browser and load a normal website. If the browser cannot reach the internet, reconnect Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, complete any captive-portal sign-in, and retry.
- Run Send/Receive All Folders. Watch whether Outlook changes from “Trying to connect” to a successful send/receive result.
New Outlook
New Outlook uses a different interface and account flow. Confirm that the app is online, then use its account synchronization or refresh control and retry after the browser connectivity test. Do not apply the classic Outlook Credential Manager procedure to new Outlook unless Microsoft specifically documents it for your build.
If web browsing works but Outlook repeatedly times out, a firewall, security product, VPN, or network policy may be blocking mail ports. Test on another trusted network if possible. A change in behavior on a different network points to local filtering rather than a bad Yahoo password.

What IMAP and SMTP settings does Yahoo Mail require in Outlook?
IMAP receives and synchronizes messages; SMTP sends them. Enter the values exactly, enable SSL, and use the complete Yahoo email address as the username.

Where to inspect the values in classic Outlook
- Open File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select the Yahoo account and choose Change or Repair, depending on the Outlook build.
- Check the incoming and outgoing server names, ports, encryption, username, and authentication requirement against the table.
- Save the changes and run Send/Receive All Folders.
A typo in the host name, a missing SSL setting, or a username that omits the “@yahoo.com” portion can produce a generic connection or authentication error. SMTP must authenticate separately even when IMAP can download mail, so a receiving account can appear healthy while sending remains broken.

Why does Outlook keep asking for my Yahoo password?
Repeated prompts usually mean Outlook is using an authentication method Yahoo no longer accepts, has an expired OAuth token, or is presenting a stale saved credential. Yahoo blocks outdated sign-in protocols by default.
Use Yahoo OAuth when Outlook presents it
In Outlook builds that support Yahoo OAuth, choose the Yahoo sign-in window and complete the Yahoo login with your regular Yahoo password and any requested verification. OAuth sends the sign-in through Yahoo’s authorization page instead of asking Outlook to store an old-style password. Microsoft reported 100% Current Channel coverage for Yahoo OAuth in Outlook Desktop as of August 2, 2023, but other channels and older builds can behave differently.

Account Key or two-step verification can require an app password for a third-party mail client. In Yahoo Account Security, create a password for the mail application, copy the generated value, and enter it in Outlook wherever the account password is requested. Use the app password only for the mail client; it does not replace the normal password you use on Yahoo’s website or in an OAuth sign-in window.
Correct a silent or incomplete password prompt
If Outlook never displays a Yahoo sign-in window, the automatic setup may be stuck in an incompatible flow. Clear the SPA (Secure Password Authentication) checkbox when that option appears, then create the account through Control Panel > Mail rather than relying on the frozen prompt. Enter the complete Yahoo address as the username and use the app password if Yahoo security settings require one.

How do I reauthenticate Yahoo in Outlook without deleting the account?
Reauthentication is safer than immediately removing an account because it preserves the existing Outlook profile and local cache.
- Open the account settings for the Yahoo account. In classic Outlook, use File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select the account and choose Sign in, Repair, or the equivalent action shown by your build.
- Complete the Yahoo OAuth window with the regular Yahoo password, or enter the newly generated app password when the account uses Account Key or two-step verification.
- Accept the requested permissions, return to Outlook, and run Send/Receive All Folders.
- Send a new test message and confirm that a fresh message arrives in the Inbox.
If the sign-in action fails, close Outlook completely, reopen it, and try once more. Only after reauthentication fails should you consider removing and adding the account again.

Microsoft says some Gmail and Yahoo accounts stopped syncing in classic Outlook on February 26, 2026. Microsoft also says the service change that caused that incident was fixed on March 20, 2026. A current outage is therefore not the only explanation: a password change can leave an expired OAuth token in the Windows credential store even after the service fix.
Refresh the stored OAuth token
- Close Outlook and verify in Task Manager that no Outlook process remains open.
- Open Control Panel and select Credential Manager.
- Choose Windows Credentials.
- Remove the entries matching the Yahoo account and named
MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2. Remove only the entries that correspond to this account; leave unrelated credentials intact. - Restart Outlook. When Yahoo requests sign-in, complete the OAuth window with the regular Yahoo password, or provide the current app password if Yahoo requires one.
- Run a full send/receive and test both an incoming and an outgoing message.
This workaround is documented for the classic Outlook case. New Outlook stores and handles account authorization differently, so use its own account-removal or sign-in controls instead of deleting arbitrary Windows credentials.

What do Outlook error codes 0x800CCC0E, 0x800CCC0F, 0x80070057, and 0x80042109 mean?
Error codes narrow the search, but they do not prove a single cause. Confirm the browser test, offline status, server values, and authentication method before treating a code as definitive.

For a send-only failure, concentrate on SMTP rather than changing IMAP. For a receive-only failure, inspect IMAP and synchronization state. If both directions fail after a Yahoo password change, refresh OAuth credentials or use a newly generated app password before rebuilding the profile.
When should I remove and re-add the Yahoo account?
Rebuild the account only after browser sign-in, network checks, server settings, and reauthentication have failed. Removing an account can discard local-only Outlook data or force a complete folder resynchronization, so preserve anything stored only in Outlook first.
- Export or otherwise back up local-only messages, contacts, calendar items, and any custom Outlook data you cannot replace from Yahoo.
- Record the account address and confirm that you know the regular Yahoo password or have a usable app password.
- In classic Outlook, open File > Account Settings > Account Settings, select the Yahoo account, and choose Remove.
- Restart Outlook, then use Add Account and enter the full Yahoo address.
- Complete Yahoo OAuth if offered. If automatic setup cannot complete, use the manual IMAP settings and SMTP settings shown earlier, including SSL and authentication.
- Allow folders to synchronize before judging the repair. Send a test message, receive a reply, and check several folders.
If the account works in a new Outlook profile but not the old one, the original profile is damaged or contains stale credentials. Keeping the new profile may be safer than repeatedly editing the broken one.

How can I verify that the repair is complete?
- Yahoo webmail accepts your sign-in and can send a self-addressed test message.
- Outlook is not in Work Offline mode and the computer has normal internet access.
- The Yahoo address is entered in full, including the domain.
- IMAP uses
imap.mail.yahoo.com, port993, with SSL. - SMTP uses
smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port465or587, with SSL and authentication. - OAuth was completed in Yahoo’s sign-in window, or a current Yahoo-generated app password was entered where required.

Should I choose SMTP port 465 or 587?
Yahoo lists both ports for authenticated SMTP with SSL. Keep the same server and security settings, try one port, and switch to the other only if a local network blocks the first; do not disable encryption to make the connection work.
Will removing an Outlook account delete messages from Yahoo Mail?
Removing the account from Outlook does not erase the mailbox stored on Yahoo’s servers. It can remove the local cached copy and any items that existed only in Outlook, so back up local-only data before rebuilding the account.
What should I do if Yahoo webmail cannot send the test message?
