Over the Hill graphics and controller settings for smoother PC and Steam Deck play

Start with a stable frame-time target, not the highest preset. On PC, begin at your monitor’s target resolution with the default or moderate preset, then lower the most demanding options one at a time if the frame rate remains low. On Steam Deck, use a conservative 720p profile with Low quality, FSR3 upscaling and a 45 FPS cap as a launch-day experiment, keeping vegetation at Low until frame pacing is steady. Brief hitches when entering a new area may be streaming or traversal events rather than a problem that a lower preset can eliminate, so test the same route and record the game build before drawing conclusions.

What settings should you use first?

There is no single “best” preset for every Over the Hill system. The useful target is consistent frame pacing during the actions that expose problems: driving through dense vegetation, turning the camera quickly and crossing into a new area. A high average frame rate can still feel uneven when individual frames arrive late.

For a Windows PC, select the game’s default or moderate graphics preset at your display’s intended resolution. Keep that configuration long enough to drive a repeatable route, then change one option at a time. For Steam Deck, a dated launch-day player report provides a practical starting point rather than a guarantee: 1280×720 output, Low quality, FSR3 and a 45 FPS cap. The same report tried vegetation one notch above Low, but that should be treated as a later experiment after the cap is stable.

Over the Hill is described on Steam as “a driving game, not a racing game.” That distinction matters when choosing a cap: smooth camera motion and predictable steering are generally more valuable than chasing a peak number during quiet stretches.

PC requirements and what they really mean

Steam lists the following Windows minimum specifications, tested at FullHD resolution:

Component Minimum listed requirement How to interpret it
Operating system Windows 10 The published baseline; newer Windows versions may work, but the listing only identifies Windows 10.
Processor Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 A floor for starting the game, not a promise of a particular frame rate.
Memory 8 GB RAM The minimum amount named by Steam; background applications can reduce available headroom.
Graphics card Nvidia GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 The minimum GPU class listed for the FullHD test configuration.
Graphics API DirectX 11 Ensure the system and driver support the API the game expects.
Storage 4 GB available space The listed installation requirement; leave additional free space for updates and shader or system overhead.

These figures establish whether a PC is near the published floor. They do not establish a locked 60 FPS target, a recommended preset or performance in multiplayer. If your processor or GPU is around the minimum, use a lower preset and cap the frame rate to what the most demanding section of your route can actually sustain.

Why a high-end review is not a minimum-spec promise

TechRadar reviewer Lewis Maddison reported that the game ran very smoothly for most of roughly 10 hours of single- and multiplayer play, even at Ultra settings. His test system used a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 5070 and 32 GB of memory. That is useful as a high-end reference, but it cannot be generalized to a PC that merely meets Steam’s minimum requirements. Differences in CPU scheduling, GPU memory, driver version, resolution and online activity can all change frame pacing.

A repeatable PC graphics workflow

Changing several options at once makes it impossible to identify the cause of a hitch or frame-rate drop. Use this procedure whenever you tune a desktop or laptop installation:

  1. Record the baseline. Note the game build, Windows version, graphics driver, display resolution, preset, frame-rate cap and whether you are playing solo or in online co-op.
  2. Choose a test route. Drive the same short loop that includes vegetation, a rapid camera turn and an area transition. Use the same weather or session conditions when the game allows it.
  3. Measure sustained behavior. Watch the performance overlay or an equivalent frame-time graph rather than relying only on the highest number shown. Identify the lowest sustained section and any repeatable spike.
  4. Lower the preset only when the problem is sustained. If the frame rate stays below your target across the route, move from Ultra or High to a moderate or Low preset before making many individual changes.
  5. Adjust one demanding option. If the preset change is insufficient, alter one graphics option, replay the route and compare frame pacing. Keep the change only if it improves the difficult section without introducing an unwanted visual problem.
  6. Separate traversal hitches from rendering load. If a brief hitch occurs at exactly the same boundary while the rest of the route is smooth, record its location and the game version. Do not claim that a lower preset fixed it unless the hitch actually disappears in repeated tests.
  7. Set a cap you can hold. A cap just below the route’s worst sustained performance usually feels better than an uncapped rate that oscillates. Recheck the route after changing the cap.

This method also makes reports useful to other players: a result that includes hardware, resolution, settings, game build and route is more informative than “it stutters sometimes.”

Steam Deck starting profile

The available launch-day report is dated October 15, 2026 and does not identify an exact game build, Proton version, route or FSR quality mode. Use it as a testable starting point, not as a guaranteed configuration for every Deck model or area.

Apply the conservative first pass

  1. Set the game resolution to 1280×720.
  2. Select the Low graphics preset.
  3. Enable FSR3 upscaling.
  4. Set a 45 FPS cap.
  5. Leave vegetation at Low for the first run. The report tried vegetation one notch above Low, but that extra detail should wait until frame pacing is consistent.
  6. Test bloom and spotlight shadows independently. The report enabled those effects but did not establish either as a performance fix, so do not assume they improve frame rate.

Drive a short loop through vegetation, turn the camera and cross into another area while watching the Deck performance overlay. If the cap is missed repeatedly or frame times fluctuate, return vegetation to Low and then choose a lower cap that the route can hold. A lower, steady target is preferable to a nominally higher cap with frequent late frames.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OLED expectations

The report describes more headroom on an OLED Deck, but it does not establish locked 60 FPS across the entire game, every region, changing weather or online co-op. Treat any improvement on OLED as device-specific evidence and repeat the same route before changing the cap.

How to investigate stutter when entering a new area

Short pauses while driving into a new region or turning the camera were reported during the launch-day Deck test. That symptom is different from a frame rate that is continuously too low. Use the branch that matches what you observe:

  • Only the boundary hitches: Repeat the crossing three or more times on the same build and note whether the pause occurs at the identical location. Keep a record instead of assuming that lowering every setting solved it.
  • The whole route is below target: Reduce the preset or one demanding option, then retest. If the route remains below target, lower the frame-rate cap.
  • Camera turns cause repeated spikes: Test a less demanding preset and compare the same turn. If the spike remains unchanged, document it as a repeatable camera or traversal event rather than a proven graphics-setting issue.
  • Co-op is worse than solo: Record whether the hitch appears only online, because network activity and simulation load add a variable that a solo comparison does not include.

Keep the game build and operating-system or Proton version in your notes. A later update can change streaming behavior, shader compilation or controller handling, making an old result difficult to reproduce without that information.

Controller settings that avoid input conflicts

Steam labels Over the Hill as Controller-enabled, and the TechRadar review was played mostly with a controller. An XInput-compatible PC game controller is therefore a relevant optional choice for PC, but no source establishes a particular brand or model as necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the default layout first

  1. Launch with the game’s default controller mapping.
  2. Play a short route and test steering, camera control, acceleration, braking, interaction and menu navigation.
  3. Identify the one action that feels awkward before changing anything.
  4. Remap a single button or stick function.
  5. Test the same action and route again. If another command now fires at the same time, undo that last change before attempting a different remap.

TechRadar reported one input clash after remapping buttons and found it easy to work around. Changing one binding at a time preserves a known-good baseline and makes the conflicting assignment obvious.

Deck controller checks

Valve’s Deck Verified criteria require full controller support, a controller-navigable experience, support for 1280×800 or 1280×720 with legible text and Proton support when Proton is used. Use those criteria as a practical checklist after a game update or a custom layout change:

  • Confirm that every essential action is reachable without a keyboard or mouse.
  • Check that menus and on-screen text remain readable at the selected Deck resolution.
  • Verify that the active Proton configuration still launches the game and preserves input behavior.
  • After any remap, test both driving and menu navigation; a layout that works on the road can still create a menu conflict.

PC and Deck settings compared

Use the following axes when comparing results between a desktop, laptop and Deck. The point is not to make the devices identical, but to make each test reproducible.

Comparison axis PC approach Steam Deck approach
Target resolution Use the monitor’s intended resolution, then reduce it only when sustained performance requires it. Begin at 1280×720 in the launch-day experiment.
Frame-rate cap Choose a cap the demanding route can sustain; do not treat the minimum specification as an FPS promise. Test 45 FPS first, then lower the cap if frame pacing is inconsistent.
Upscaling Use the game’s available option only after recording native-resolution behavior. FSR3 was part of the reported starting profile; the report did not state its quality mode.
Vegetation and effects Lower the most demanding individual option after testing the preset. Keep vegetation at Low initially; test bloom and spotlight shadows separately.
Input behavior Start with defaults and remap one function at a time. Apply the same rule, then verify Deck menu navigation and text legibility.
Test context Record hardware, driver, Windows version, build and route. Also record Deck model, SteamOS or Proton version, build and whether the session is solo or co-op.

What to record when reporting a result

A useful performance note can fit in a few lines, but it needs the details that determine whether another player can reproduce it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PC components or Deck model, including OLED or LCD where relevant.
  • Operating-system version and, on Deck, the Proton version.
  • Game build or update number.
  • Resolution, preset, upscaling mode and quality mode if shown.
  • Vegetation, bloom, spotlight shadows and any frame-rate cap.
  • The exact route, including the area transition or camera turn that triggered a hitch.
  • Solo or online co-op status.
  • Whether the symptom is a sustained low frame rate, uneven frame pacing or a single repeatable boundary hitch.

This information prevents a high-end Ultra result from being mistaken for a minimum-spec recommendation and prevents a single Deck report from being presented as a universal locked-60 setting.

Answers to common setup questions

Can a PC that meets the minimum requirements run smoothly?

The minimum list confirms the published hardware floor, not a guaranteed frame rate. Start with a moderate or Low preset, cap to the performance your route sustains and tune individual options only after measuring the baseline.

Should you target 60 FPS on every Steam Deck?

No universal locked-60 result is established. The launch-day report found a 45 FPS profile useful as a starting experiment and described additional OLED headroom without proving 60 FPS throughout every region, weather condition or co-op session.

Is FSR3 automatically the best Deck choice?

FSR3 is part of the reported 1280×720 Low-quality profile, but the report does not state its quality mode or compare it with every alternative. Test it on your route and judge frame pacing and image clarity together.

What should you do if a remap makes two actions fire together?

Undo the most recent binding, return to the last known-good layout and test again. Changing one assignment at a time makes the offending conflict easy to isolate.

Does lowering graphics settings always remove area-entry stutter?

No. A hitch that occurs at the same boundary can be a traversal or streaming event. Record the location, build and test conditions, and only call it fixed when repeated runs show that it is gone.
