Blizzard initially planned to run Overwatch 2’s 6v6 tests for a few weeks. That was a test window, not a promised end date for 6v6: the studio said it would weigh participation, continued play, feedback and effects on other modes before deciding what came next. Later official updates show 6v6 continued beyond those tests, but they do not establish a definitive end date for its current availability.

How long was the initial 6v6 test supposed to last?

In 2024, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller described the test as temporary: “We’d run the test for a few weeks and gauge interest from the community.” (

The follow-up laid out two Season 14 tests, each presented as its own Unranked card and given test-specific balance changes:

• Min 1, Max 3: Each team needed at least one player in every role and could have no more than three in any role. Players could switch roles as long as the team stayed within those limits.
• Classic 2-2-2: Each team had two players in each role, with Overwatch 2 design changes including reduced crowd control and hero reworks.

Queue times were another concern. A mode requiring two tanks on each team could take longer to match if its player population was not large enough. Blizzard therefore framed the decision around both demand and whether 6v6 could coexist with the established 5v5 experience without harming other modes. In its Season 16 outlook, Blizzard said Competitive 6v6 Open Queue was the game’s third most-played mode by time during Season 15 until an April Fools mode overtook it. The studio also reported an average 3:1 ratio of players choosing Competitive 5v5 over Competitive 6v6. It said the 6v6 population remained steady, while queue health and the long-term coexistence of the formats remained under evaluation. Did the 6v6 tests end, or is 6v6 still in Overwatch 2?

Blizzard continued discussing 6v6 formats and their trade-offs after the original tests, including role composition, flexibility and queue times. Official retail patch notes dated September 17, 2026, also listed separate 5v5 and 6v6 balance values for D.Mon, showing that the studio was still tuning 6v6 specifically at that update. Neither those notes nor the later format discussion supplies an exact end date for current availability. (September 17, 2026 patch notes.)

So the best-supported answer is: the original test was expected to last a few weeks, but Blizzard did not set a permanent 6v6 end date in that announcement. Its later status depended on player participation and feedback as well as queue health, technical performance and the effect on 5v5 and other modes. Subsequent official updates show 6v6 remained an active part of Blizzard’s evaluation, but do not confirm how long it will remain available now.
