Blizzard’s current public-facing name for the game is Overwatch, not Overwatch 2. Its official site describes it as a free-to-play, team-based action game with 5v5 matches. But the official materials reviewed do not establish when Blizzard dropped the “2” or why, so there is no confirmed date or stated rationale to report.
What Blizzard calls the game now
Blizzard’s current Overwatch landing page uses the name Overwatch and presents the game as a free-to-play, always-on live experience. It describes matches as 5v5 and showcases current content. That establishes the current public-facing branding; it does not, by itself, document a formal renaming decision.
How the launch was framed in 2022
Before release, Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 as a free-to-play live experience launching on October 4, 2022. The announcement framed it around a new PvP experience, heroes, maps, and ongoing live-service content. Those details describe the launch-era positioning, not the reason the current site uses Overwatch.
Blizzard’s contemporaneous launch announcement is useful historical context: the “2” was part of the game’s official launch branding. It is not evidence of when or why that branding later changed.

What changed in the live-service framing
The naming story sits alongside changes to how Blizzard described access to heroes and seasonal content. In a 2022 explanation, Blizzard outlined a seasonal model with a Battle Pass and hero unlocks. In a 2024 developer update, it said new heroes would be immediately unlocked for players beginning with Season 10; existing heroes would also be unlocked, while new players would still complete the first-time user experience to unlock heroes.
These are dated policy statements, not a guarantee of the rules in effect today. Consult Blizzard’s 2022 Battle Pass and hero-unlock explanation and its 2024 developer update as records of those changes. For current access details, rely on the live game’s current information rather than treating either older post as a present-day policy guide.

What the 2026 announcement does—and doesn’t—confirm
Blizzard’s February 4, 2026, Overwatch Spotlight announcement described the presentation as a look at the next chapter of Overwatch. It supports the fact that Blizzard is continuing to develop and promote the game under that name. It does not give a rebrand date or explain the removal of “2.”

As a matter of current branding, Blizzard presents the game as Overwatch, while its launch-era materials called it Overwatch 2. The available official statements establish that contrast, but not a formal change date, a specific announcement about dropping the number, or Blizzard’s reasoning. The most precise description is that the current public-facing name is Overwatch; the history and rationale of the naming shift remain unconfirmed by these sources.
