In Monster Hunter Wilds, the official character description calls a Palico a cat-like Felyne who can speak with people and is the hunter’s trusted partner. Their precise abilities, recruitment systems, training and equipment depend on the game: the mechanics in Monster Hunter Generations and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate are distinct systems, not rules that apply to every entry.
What are Palicoes in Monster Hunter?
A Palico is a companion role associated with Felynes, the cat-like creatures in the Monster Hunter series. In its Monster Hunter Wilds character description, PlayStation describes the Palico as “A Felyne—a cat-like creature fully capable of speaking with people—who is the hunter’s trusted ‘Palico’ partner. In Monster Hunter Wilds, the official description says Palicoes provide hunting and moral support. The specific Wilds page cited here does not list a full move set or detailed ability system, so individual actions should not be assumed from older games.

Older entries document more specific, game-bound systems. In Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, for example, the manual describes Palicoes dropping items, being sent on quests, and using scraps to forge their equipment. The Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate manual is the reference for those mechanics.
Can you customize your Palico?
Customization depends on the game. Official manuals document ways to manage Palicoes and their equipment in some older entries, while Capcom’s Wilds spotlight shows that players shared images of their in-game Palicoes. It does not establish every customization option available in Wilds.

In a March 14, 2025 Capcom Snapshots feature, Capcom’s David Poole wrote: “Two weeks ago, to celebrate the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds, we asked you to show us pictures of your Palicoes.” The feature invited fan submissions and limited eligible entries to unaltered images from Capcom games. Capcom’s Snapshots feature documents that sharing activity.
How do Palico systems differ between games?
The manuals for Monster Hunter Generations and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate show why it is useful to check the title-specific instructions. Both include Palico management, but the documented systems are not interchangeable.
