To password-protect a PDF online for free, open a provider’s Protect PDF page, upload or select your file, enter and confirm an open password, apply protection, then download the new PDF. PDF24, iLovePDF, Smallpdf and Adobe Acrobat on the web all describe browser-based workflows, but they do not offer identical controls or file-handling terms. An open password controls whether a reader can view the document; a separate permissions password may control printing, copying or editing in compatible PDF applications. Before uploading a sensitive file, check where it is processed, how long the provider says it keeps it, and whether the service gives you the controls you actually need.
What is the difference between an open password and a permissions password?
An open password is required to open or view an encrypted PDF. A permissions password governs actions such as printing, copying text, editing, adding comments, filling forms or assembling pages, when the PDF reader honors those restrictions.

Open passwords protect access to the document
When you set an open password, someone who receives the file must enter it before the PDF contents are displayed. This is the setting to choose when the main requirement is “only people with this password can read the file.” Keep the password separate from the PDF when you share it; sending both in the same unprotected message reduces the benefit of the control.
Permissions are application-dependent
iLovePDF’s protection page provides a second permissions-password field and controls for printing, copying, editing, comments, forms and document assembly: iLovePDF Protect PDF. Its documentation warns that some applications may not correctly apply those restrictions. Therefore, permissions are a compatibility feature, not an absolute guarantee that every PDF program will block every selected action.

How do I password-protect a PDF online for free?
The common process takes four stages: choose the service, upload the PDF, configure the password, and download the protected copy. The labels differ slightly, so use the tool-specific instructions below rather than assuming every site has the same options.
Basic workflow
- Open the provider’s official Protect PDF page.
- Select the PDF from your device. The service will upload it for processing.
- Enter an open password, re-enter it when requested, and select any available permissions settings.
- Start the protection operation, wait for processing to finish, and download the resulting PDF.
- Open the downloaded copy in a separate PDF reader and test the password before sharing it. Keep the original unprotected file in a secure location if you may need to make changes later.
Do not assume that a successful download proves the password is correct. Testing the downloaded copy catches typing errors, an accidentally protected wrong file, or a permissions setting that your normal PDF reader ignores.

The following comparison reflects statements on the providers’ official pages. Encryption, deletion and storage descriptions are vendor claims, not independent security audits, and product limits can change.
| Tool | Password and permissions options | Stated security or handling details | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| PDF24 Protect PDF | Open-password field and configurable permissions. | PDF24 states AES 256-bit encryption, SSL transfer, servers in Germany and automatic deletion after one hour. | Users who want an open password plus a published set of permission controls and a stated one-hour deletion period. |
| iLovePDF Protect PDF | Separate open and permissions passwords; controls for printing, copying, editing, comments, forms and assembly. | The page warns that some applications may not correctly enforce permission restrictions. | Users who need granular permission choices and understand that reader compatibility matters. |
| Smallpdf Password Protect PDF | Online password protection; the cited page does not establish the same permissions menu as iLovePDF. | Smallpdf states AES 128-bit encryption, TLS-secured transfers, deletion after one hour and that it never saves document passwords. | Users who prioritize the provider’s published transfer, deletion and password-handling statements. |
| Adobe Acrobat on the web | Adobe’s learning documentation says the web flow sets only a view password. | Adobe says the secured web copy is saved to Adobe cloud storage. | Users already working in Adobe’s web environment who need viewing protection rather than permission controls. |
There is no evidence here for a single “most secure” winner. Compare the exact control you need, whether the file leaves your device, the provider’s stated retention practice, account or usage requirements on the current page, and whether your recipients use readers that honor permissions.
How do I use PDF24 to add a password?
PDF24’s online tool supports an open password and configurable permissions. Its product page describes cloud-server processing, AES 256-bit encryption, SSL transfer, servers in Germany and automatic deletion after one hour.

- Enter the password that should be required to open the document.
- Review the available permission controls and select the restrictions appropriate for your recipients.
- Run the protection operation and download the output file.
- Close the browser tab when finished and verify the downloaded copy locally.
PDF24 states that files are automatically deleted from its server after one hour. That is a provider statement about its service, not a guarantee that no temporary copies, browser caches or recipient copies exist.
How do I protect a PDF with iLovePDF?
iLovePDF separates the password used to open the file from the password used to change permissions. This makes it useful when you want recipients to view a document but want compatible readers to restrict selected actions.
- Open iLovePDF Protect PDF and select your file.
- Enter an open password and confirm it.
- Set a permissions password if the page presents that option.
- Choose the actions to allow or restrict, including printing, copying, editing, comments, forms and assembly.
- Start protection and download the resulting PDF.
- Test both opening and the intended restrictions in the PDF applications your recipients are likely to use.
The provider’s help documentation is available at iLovePDF help documentation. iLovePDF specifically cautions that some applications do not correctly apply permission restrictions, so do not use those settings as the sole safeguard for a high-consequence document.
How do I use Smallpdf’s free password protection?
Smallpdf describes an online protection flow with AES 128-bit encryption, TLS-secured transfers, one-hour file deletion and a policy statement that document passwords are not saved.
- Open Smallpdf Password Protect PDF.
- Upload the PDF you want to protect.
- Enter and confirm the password requested by the page.
- Apply protection and download the finished file.
- Open the download locally to confirm that the password prompt appears.
Smallpdf’s encryption, deletion and password-handling descriptions are claims made by Smallpdf. They are useful selection criteria, but they do not constitute an independent penetration test, certification or comparison with the other services.

How does Adobe Acrobat on the web protect a PDF?
Adobe’s web instructions let you set a password on a PDF through Acrobat on the web. Adobe says the secured copy is saved to Adobe cloud storage, so this is a cloud workflow rather than a local-only operation.
- Open Adobe’s Acrobat web password-protection instructions and start the web tool.
- Select or upload the PDF.
- Set the password required to view the file and complete the protection action.
- Download or access the secured copy according to the page’s current controls.
Adobe’s separate learning documentation says, “You can only set a view password in Acrobat on the web.” If you need printing, copying or editing controls, the web flow is not the right match based on that documentation. Adobe also notes that signed or certified documents cannot have passwords added through its described desktop process; preserve the document’s signature status before attempting changes.
Are online PDF password tools private enough for sensitive documents?
Online protection normally means the PDF is uploaded to a provider’s servers or cloud storage for processing. PDF24 describes cloud-server processing, and Adobe says its secured web copy is saved to Adobe cloud storage. The cited pages do not establish that these workflows keep all file contents on your device.
Check the provider’s stated handling terms
- PDF24 states one-hour automatic deletion and identifies Germany as its server location.
- Smallpdf states one-hour deletion and says it does not save document passwords.
- Adobe states that the secured web copy is saved to Adobe cloud storage.
- iLovePDF’s cited protection page focuses on password and permission controls; do not assume it has the same retention policy as another provider.
For tax records, health information, legal files, unreleased game builds or other highly sensitive material, decide first whether uploading is acceptable under your organization’s policy and the provider’s current terms. If local-only processing is mandatory, use a trusted desktop PDF application instead of an online upload; the named web pages do not provide a local-processing guarantee.

Encryption length should be considered alongside the password itself, transport protection, cloud retention, access controls and the sensitivity of the file. A short, reused password can undermine a theoretically strong encryption setting, while a provider’s deletion statement does not eliminate every risk created by uploading a document.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check before sending the protected PDF?
Use this final checklist to avoid the most common failures.
- Test the password: close the file and reopen it so you know the prompt appears and the password works.
- Check the recipient’s reader: permissions such as printing or copying may not be enforced consistently across applications.
- Keep the original: save an unprotected master in a controlled location if you may need to edit or re-export the document.
- Share the password separately: use a different communication channel from the PDF whenever practical.
- Confirm the right file: compare the downloaded filename, page count and contents with the intended source.
- Review current limits: free file-size, queue, account and daily-use limits are service-specific and can change, so check the live provider page.
- Preserve signatures carefully: adding protection can conflict with signed or certified-document workflows, particularly in Adobe’s documented desktop process.
Which free tool should you choose?
Choose PDF24 when its stated AES 256-bit encryption, Germany server location, one-hour deletion statement and permission controls fit your requirements. Choose iLovePDF when you need a clearly separated permissions password and granular controls, provided your recipients’ applications honor them. Choose Smallpdf when its stated TLS transfer, one-hour deletion and document-password handling are the deciding factors. Choose Adobe Acrobat on the web when a view password and Adobe cloud workflow are acceptable; its web documentation does not describe permissions-password controls.
None of these choices removes the need to manage the password securely, verify the downloaded file and evaluate whether cloud processing is allowed for the document. Provider features and terms can change, so confirm the current page immediately before uploading an important PDF.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I password-protect a PDF without uploading it to a website?
The online workflows described here involve upload or cloud processing; PDF24 explicitly describes cloud-server processing and Adobe says its secured web copy is saved to Adobe cloud storage. If policy requires that the file never leave your device, use a reputable desktop PDF application instead of these browser tools.

Do I need an account to use a free PDF protection tool?
The cited pages do not establish one universal account requirement, and providers can change free-use rules. Check the current tool page for sign-in, file-size, daily-use or queue limits before you begin.
What happens if I forget the PDF password?
Adobe warns that forgotten passwords cannot be retrieved. Keep the password in an approved password manager or another secure record; otherwise you may need to recover an earlier unprotected copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill a password-protected PDF open on every phone or computer?
Opening support depends on the recipient’s PDF application and its encryption compatibility. Send a test copy to the software or device combination that matters, and do not assume that a permissions setting will behave identically in every reader.
Can a permissions password guarantee that nobody prints or copies the document?
No. Permissions controls are enforced by compatible PDF applications, and iLovePDF warns that some applications may not apply them correctly. Use an open password for access control and treat permissions as an additional, application-dependent restriction.
