Path of the Midnight Sun is a single-player PC RPG built around a story-led blend of visual-novel presentation, character relationships, and turn-based combat. Reviews are encouraging, but they come from two distinct pools: Steam user reviews and a small Metacritic critic sample. Whether it suits you depends less on a single score than on how much you want narrative and party relationships alongside battles.

What kind of game is Path of the Midnight Sun?

Studio Daimon released Path of the Midnight Sun on Windows PC through Steam on January 10, 2023. Steam categorizes it as Adventure, RPG, and Strategy, and lists it as single-player. The official description presents three playable protagonists, player choices, party management, exploration, relationship-building, and turn-based battles. Its story unfolds on Arvium, centering on Lady Faratras Hoikade, a Vassal who houses the Demon King’s soul, and the people around her. View the Steam listing.

The store describes the presentation as hand-drawn art animated with Live2D and professional voice acting for more than 50 characters. Those are developer-provided product details, not independent assessments of the art, acting, or narrative quality. Steam advertises “25 hours of content”; treat that as Studio Daimon’s estimate rather than a guaranteed or independently measured playtime.

What do the reviews say?

Source Reported result How to read it
Steam user reviews 83% positive from 236 user reviews in a Valve/Steam snapshot captured October 8, 2026. A user-rating snapshot that can change as reviews are added or removed. Check the live Steam page for the current figure.
Metacritic critic reviews 79 Metascore based on five critic reviews, as accessed October 8, 2026. A small critic sample, separate from Steam’s user ratings; the aggregate may change.

One specific critic response helps explain the appeal behind the positive reception. In a January 13, 2023 review reproduced by Metacritic, Digitally Downloaded praised the “intriguing and often surprisingly original story, relatable characters, and solid gameplay,” calling the game a love letter to classic JRPGs that also stands on its own. Steam also features RPGFan’s short description of it as an “Excellent hybrid of VN/RPG mechanics.” That pull quote is a brief characterization, not a substitute for the full review.

#1 Best Overall
Asylum - Nintendo Switch
  • A chilling journey into the dark mind: Explore the Hanwell Mental Institute and uncover its dark past.
  • Experience a mind-bending original storyline as recurring hallucinations blur the line between memory and reality.
  • Investigate a detailed, decrepit asylum through point-and-click adventure gameplay.
  • Solve evocative challenges that reward wit and observation.
  • Enter an engrossing atmosphere with a memorable soundtrack inspired by 1980s horror films and John Carpenter.

Taken together, the available evidence points to a game that found a receptive audience among both users and critics, while the low number of critic reviews limits how broadly the Metascore can represent critical opinion. The scores do not establish that every player will enjoy its pacing, combat balance, or writing.

Will its story-and-battle balance suit you?

The official feature list makes relationships and narrative choices part of the RPG loop, rather than presenting the game as combat alone. Consider the balance you want from a role-playing game:

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
  • Choose it if: you like character-focused stories, visual-novel-style presentation, party relationships, and turn-based combat in the same game.
  • Think carefully if: you want frequent, mechanically deep battles to dominate the experience. The official description confirms turn-based combat but does not establish its frequency or tactical depth.
  • Look elsewhere if: you specifically want an action RPG or multiplayer game; Steam lists this as a single-player title and describes turn-based battles.

These are decision points based on the game’s published features and the review evidence above, not firsthand testing.

Which difficulty mode should you choose?

Steam’s description lists Story and Hardcore modes. The available listing does not spell out their exact mechanical differences, so it is safest to choose according to your preference for challenge rather than assume a particular set of combat adjustments. Story mode is the natural starting point if you mainly want to follow the narrative; Hardcore is the option to consider if you want the tougher-sounding setting. Consult current in-game mode descriptions before committing, since the store page does not document the precise rules.

There is more to discover than just the murderer….Use your talents of deduction to link clues in your mindmap.

What content should players know about?

Steam’s developer-provided mature-content descriptors include alcohol references, animated blood, violence, mentions of self-harm, partial nudity, skippable hot-springs nudity, and sexual themes. The listing notes that the hot-springs nudity is skippable. These descriptors flag subjects that may matter to players, but do not by themselves explain how frequently or extensively each appears.

Is it available on your platform, and what does your PC need?

The verified listing covered here is the Windows PC game on Steam. Steam lists English interface, full audio, and subtitles, as well as Italian and Japanese interface and subtitles. Its posted requirements specify 6 GB RAM and 5 GB available storage at minimum, and 8 GB RAM and 10 GB storage as recommended. Check the current store listing for the full requirements and compatibility notes for your setup, since storefront information can change.

Plants Vs Zombies Battle for Neighborville Complete Edition - Nintendo Switch
  • Ready the juice cannons and prepare for battle in the wackiest shooter yet
  • Tackle hilarious missions and defeat epic bosses to collect medals and unlock outrageous outfits
  • PvE Offline: Discover giddy park, PvE free-roam regions and private play modes all without an internet collection
  • Rux Coin Store: Earn in-game coins only through play, and spend them to unlock cool items, characters and perks

Steam also lists a digital Original Soundtrack and Official Artbook, plus a bundle containing the game and both add-ons. Studio Daimon’s March 24, 2023 soundtrack announcement describes 60 tracks and over three hours of orchestrated music, composed by Andrea Caranfil, and says the soundtrack includes MP3 and FLAC files. Those details describe the digital soundtrack; they do not establish physical editions. The available information does not substantiate a boxed game, console version, printed artbook, physical soundtrack, guidebook, or title-specific merchandise.

Verdict: who should consider Path of the Midnight Sun?

Consider Path of the Midnight Sun if you want a PC RPG where story, character relationships, and turn-based combat share the spotlight. The review signals are positive, but the critic aggregate rests on only five reviews, and the scores cannot answer whether its pacing or combat will match your taste. Check the current Steam listing for availability, live user sentiment, PC requirements, and mode details before buying.
