To find out whether a PC game will run on a handheld, check the exact game edition and storefront against the exact device model, operating system and graphics hardware. On Steam Deck, begin with Valve’s Deck compatibility badge and read its detail panel. On a Windows ROG Ally or Intel handheld, begin with the game’s Windows requirements, then verify graphics API support, drivers, controls, launchers and anti-cheat. Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility badge is a separate signal for supported Windows handhelds. None of these labels guarantees your preferred frame rate or trouble-free updates, so use them as the first step in a device-specific check.

How do I check a game before installing it?
Use the game’s precise store listing and the handheld’s precise model as your starting pair. A different edition, launcher or graphics configuration can change the result.
- Record the game identity. Write down the exact title, edition, store and version shown on the listing. Steam says the listing’s System Requirements section identifies supported operating systems and hardware, so do not transfer requirements from a console edition, a sequel or another storefront.
- Record the handheld identity. Note the full model name, processor, integrated or discrete GPU, installed operating system, available storage and current graphics-driver date. “ROG Ally” and “Intel handheld” are families, not single performance levels.
- Check the platform-specific indicator. Use Valve’s Deck panel for Steam Deck, Windows requirements and hardware for a ROG Ally or Intel device, and Xbox’s separate badge when the game is shown in the Xbox app on a supported handheld.
- Check the practical blockers. Confirm graphics API support, controller behavior, text entry, launcher navigation, anti-cheat, DRM-related requirements documented for that game, storage and whether the evidence is recent.
- Recheck after changes. Game patches, Proton revisions, anti-cheat updates, graphics drivers and storefront versions can alter compatibility. Reopen the official listing immediately before buying or installing.
“Runs” and “plays comfortably” are different decisions. A title can launch yet require a lower resolution, a control-profile change or a plugged-in power mode to match your expectations.

How should I read Steam Deck Verified?
Steam Deck’s badge is a Valve assessment for Deck, not a universal verdict for Windows handhelds. Valve applies the ratings to both Deck LCD and OLED models and describes four categories on its official compatibility page.
- Verified: Valve says the game works well out of the box.
- Playable: The game works, but manual tweaking may be needed.
- Unsupported: Valve currently considers the game not functional on Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not completed a compatibility check. Its explanation is: “We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.” Unknown is not proof of failure.
What does the Deck detail panel actually inspect?
Open the badge’s explanation rather than relying on its color. Valve’s checklist covers controller input, the on-screen keyboard, supported resolution and legible text, launcher navigation, and system support such as Proton and anti-cheat. A Playable result can therefore reflect a keyboard prompt, a launcher step or a control adjustment rather than the same type of problem as an Unsupported result.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes a Playable default of 30 frames per second at 800p on Steam Deck. That is a review criterion, not a measured frame rate for the game you are considering. It does not tell you how the title behaves after a major patch, with a particular graphics preset or on battery power.
What the Deck badge does not tell you
The badge does not automatically certify a Windows installation, another storefront’s launcher or a different handheld GPU. It also is not a personal guarantee against future updates. Valve says reviews continue as games and the platform change, so check the current panel again when you are ready to play.
What can a ROG Ally run, and how do I verify it?
A ROG Ally is a Windows PC in a handheld shell. Compare the game’s Windows minimum and recommended requirements with the exact Ally model’s processor, graphics capability, memory and storage; then verify controls and launcher behavior in Armoury Crate SE.

Check the Windows requirement line by line
- Open the game’s store listing and expand System Requirements.
- Confirm that the listed Windows version is supported by the Ally’s installed edition.
- Compare the minimum CPU and GPU families, graphics API, RAM and storage requirements with the Ally’s specifications. A requirement written for a discrete desktop GPU may not translate directly to an integrated handheld GPU.
- Check whether the game requires a launcher, a persistent connection, a specific anti-cheat service or another component. Treat only requirements documented for that title as established blockers.
- Allow room for shader caches, updates and the launcher itself; a microSD card can provide installation space, but it cannot repair a graphics or software incompatibility.
ASUS documents support on Ally for Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA App and GOG Galaxy, with installed games appearing in Armoury Crate SE. That describes where games can be obtained or launched; it does not certify that every catalog entry runs well.
Fix control problems without changing the game’s compatibility verdict
If a game starts but the buttons or cursor behave incorrectly, inspect its Armoury Crate SE game profile. ASUS says the control modes are:
- Gamepad mode: presents controller input to the game.
- Desktop mode: maps controls for Windows-style pointer and keyboard use.
- Auto mode: restores the profile behavior for that game.
Switching manually into Gamepad or Desktop mode temporarily overrides a per-game profile; Auto returns to the profile’s behavior. This can solve an input mismatch, but it does not raise the GPU’s performance or bypass an anti-cheat restriction. The relevant ASUS instructions are in its Armoury Crate SE support FAQ.
Do not confuse Ally models
ASUS ROG Ally X (2024) and ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) are different models. Check the model printed in Windows and use that model’s processor, memory and power settings when interpreting requirements. A badge or report attached to one configuration should not be presented as a result for the other.
Where do I find Xbox handheld compatibility badges?
When a game is displayed through the Xbox app on a supported Windows handheld, open its product details and look for Xbox’s separate Handheld Compatibility status. Xbox defines four labels:

- Unsupported: not supported by that program.
- Not tested: Xbox has not yet tested it; this is not the same as Unsupported.
Xbox notes that some games still need in-game setting changes for optimal performance. On October 30, 2025, Xbox said the program’s results would appear on product-detail pages across Windows devices and in a compatible-handheld channel on supported Windows handhelds. Do not treat an Xbox-app label as a badge for every PC storefront, every Windows handheld or every installation method.
An Xbox Wire announcement dated April 30, 2026 reported more than 1,000 PC games playing well through the Handheld Compatibility program. That is Xbox’s dated, program-wide figure—not a live count, a title-by-title guarantee or proof for an unlisted device.
How do I check an Intel-powered handheld’s graphics support?
“Intel handheld” is a hardware category, not one graphics configuration. Identify the exact processor and integrated or discrete GPU, Windows version, graphics API required by the game and installed driver before deciding.
Identify the hardware and API
- In Windows, record the processor and graphics adapter names exactly as shown in system information or Device Manager.
- Read the game’s minimum graphics API requirement—such as DirectX or Vulkan where the listing specifies one—and compare it with the API support for that GPU.
- Check the manufacturer’s power and memory configuration. Two handhelds using related Intel graphics can have different sustained power limits and therefore different practical settings.
- Update the Intel graphics driver before drawing conclusions. Intel’s support guidance says, “We recommend that you update to the latest Intel Graphics driver to get full API support.”
Intel’s support article explains that API support varies with the graphics device and recommends a current driver. Intel Graphics Software is the current utility described in that FAQ; Intel Arc Control is listed there as end of life. A manufacturer’s claim about an Arc handheld family, or a benchmark from one configuration, cannot confirm that your particular game works.
Put Intel performance figures in context
Intel reported an average 44% faster performance across 36 tested game titles for a stated MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ versus MSI Claw 8 AI+ configuration. Intel specified 35 W sustained power, 1080p High settings and 2× upscaling when supported, with testing in May 2026. That aggregate is a hardware comparison under stated conditions, not a compatibility result for any named game or every Intel handheld.

Intel’s Arc G-series page describes Windows 11 handheld gaming, but it is not a title-by-title compatibility database. Verify the operating system and driver on the device in your hands.
What is the difference between Unknown, Not tested and Unsupported?
Unknown and Not tested mean that the relevant program has not completed its check; Unsupported means the program currently records a failure or lack of support. Neither a positive badge nor an untested label predicts your preferred frame rate.

Community reports can add useful context when the official status is ambiguous. For Deck, readers may consult ProtonDB themselves, but reports can vary by game version, Proton version, hardware and user settings. Treat them as supporting evidence, not certification, and prefer a recent report for the same device.

Launching to a menu is only the first threshold. Check the following dimensions separately so “works” has a meaning that matches your use.
- Operating system and compatibility layer: Steam Deck commonly relies on SteamOS and Proton; Windows handhelds do not use the same layer by default.
- Graphics hardware and API: Match the game’s minimum GPU and API to the actual device, not the family name.
- Resolution and text: Readable menus and an on-screen keyboard can determine whether a title is practical at handheld resolution.
- Controller input: Check whether the game recognizes a controller at launch and whether a mouse or keyboard is required for a launcher or menu.
- Launcher and store access: A game can be available in a supported storefront yet still require an additional launcher or login.
- Anti-cheat and DRM: Consider only restrictions documented for that game; do not infer a failure from a generic warning.
- Power state: Battery and plugged-in modes can use different performance limits. A result at one power setting is not automatically the result at another.
- Storage: Confirm the installation size plus update space. A high-speed microSD card can solve capacity constraints when the device and game support it, but storage expansion does not fix software compatibility.
- Evidence date: Prefer information tied to the current game version, driver and device firmware.

- Open the game menu, choose Properties, then Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select an available Proton version, launch the game and check whether the documented problem changes.
- If it does not, return to the current official compatibility details and look for a launcher, input, text or anti-cheat reason that Proton selection cannot address.
Steam documents this path in its Steam Support FAQ. Choosing a different Proton version can help with some software combinations; it is not a universal workaround for every anti-cheat system or game update.

- Confirm the device. Write down the model, OS, processor, GPU, driver and available storage.
- Read the right badge. Use Steam Deck details for Deck, Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility status for supported Xbox-app experiences, and Windows requirements for other handhelds.
- Read the reason, not just the label. Note whether the issue concerns controls, text, a launcher, Proton, anti-cheat or hardware.

Can a Steam Deck Verified game fail on a ROG Ally?

Does an Unknown Steam Deck badge mean the game is unsafe to buy?

Only when installation space is the problem. A supported high-speed card can expand storage on devices that accept one, but it cannot supply a missing graphics API, repair controller mapping or bypass anti-cheat.
