DRM in PC games is a technical check that controls whether a game can be launched or accessed—for example, by checking that your account has a license or by requiring a launcher. It can affect offline play, but it does not settle what rights your purchase grants. Those are separate questions: what the store’s terms say, what checks the specific game and edition require, and whether the mode you want depends on online services.

That distinction matters when you travel, lose internet access, reinstall a game, or want to keep a usable copy. A downloaded game folder is not necessarily enough to play, and an offline mode is not automatically DRM-free. The outcome depends on the exact game and how it was obtained.

What does DRM mean in a PC game?

DRM stands for digital rights management. In games, it describes technical measures that manage access to a copy, such as verifying a license or requiring a particular launcher to start. These measures are not all identical: a game may use a storefront’s own protection, additional protection from its publisher, or requirements tied to online features.

Valve’s developer documentation describes the Steam DRM wrapper as a basic protection option: it checks ownership and starts Steam before launching the game. Developers can also combine that wrapper with other DRM. That means a Steam purchase does not, by itself, tell you every check a particular game will perform; the game’s edition and its other requirements matter. Valve’s Steamworks DRM documentation explains the wrapper and the possibility of combining protections.

DRM is not the same as an internet connection in every case. Some checks may be needed only for activation or an initial launch; other games or features may need a continuing connection. An online multiplayer mode, for instance, can require servers even if the single-player portion does not. Look at the game’s actual requirements rather than treating every launcher or every game from one publisher as having the same policy.

Do I actually own my Steam games?

Steam’s terms say that users receive a license to use content, rather than ownership of the content itself. That does not mean a buyer has no right to play a game: the agreement grants a personal-use license subject to its terms. It does mean that buying access on Steam is not the same as acquiring the game’s copyright or an unrestricted copy to use independently of the account and service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement, revised September 10, 2026, states: “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” It also says access may require the Steam account, client, and internet. Those terms describe the service relationship; they do not establish that every game needs an internet check every time it launches.

Keep the practical and legal questions distinct. A license describes the rights and conditions attached to access; DRM describes technical controls on launching or using a game. A DRM-free game also does not mean that its buyer owns the copyright. GOG’s use of “DRM-free” refers to the absence of technical copy protection, not a transfer of the game’s intellectual property.

Can I play PC games without internet?

Often, yes—but not universally, and not always indefinitely. The storefront’s offline feature, the game’s own requirements, and whether you completed any required online setup all affect the answer. Offline play is usually most dependable for an already installed, updated single-player game that has been launched and activated as required.

Storefront What its current guidance says about offline play Important condition
Steam Steam has a Go Offline option for playing eligible installed games. Games requiring an active connection or an external launcher will not work in Steam Offline Mode. Steam Offline Mode instructions
GOG GOG’s releases must be DRM-free, and the offline-playable portions must work without Galaxy or an internet connection. Galaxy is optional for offline single-player play; online features such as multiplayer remain a separate matter. GOG quality-assurance guidance
Epic Games Store Epic says its launcher can enter Offline Mode automatically when it starts or runs without a connection. Only eligible, installed single-player games work; not all titles support the feature. Multiplayer and connected services may be unavailable. Epic Offline Mode guidance
EA app EA says eligible games work offline for 30 days after their last online launch. A game must first have launched online, and the game itself must not require a connection. This is EA’s stated window, not a general rule for other storefronts. EA app download and play guidance

These are storefront-level guidelines, not guarantees for every title. A game can impose extra checks through a separate launcher, or its desired mode may depend on an online service. In particular, do not assume all games on the same storefront have identical DRM or offline behavior.

Is Steam Offline Mode the same as DRM-free?

No. Steam Offline Mode is a way to use Steam and eligible games without a current internet connection; DRM-free describes a game copy that does not use technical copy protection. A game can work in Steam Offline Mode and still depend on Steam or a prior license check. Offline Mode is therefore conditional access, not a general DRM bypass.

For Steam’s documented process, first sign in while online with “Remember me” enabled, complete client and game updates, and launch each intended game online at least once. Then use Steam’s Go Offline command. Valve warns that a game requiring an active connection or an external launcher will not work in that mode. Its guidance does not say that every Steam game uses the same protection, nor does it promise that every title remains playable offline for the same length of time. Steam’s Offline Mode instructions give the client steps and limitations.

Steam Offline Mode is most useful when you prepare in advance and need temporary access to a compatible game. It is not equivalent to keeping a self-contained installer that can run without a storefront client or an account check.

What is different about a DRM-free GOG game?

GOG’s stated release requirements make its offline single-player offering meaningfully different: the DRM-free game portions must function without Galaxy or an internet connection. Galaxy remains optional for offline single-player use, and GOG documents offline backup installers. GOG summarized its commitment in 2022 by saying, “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” GOG’s 2022 DRM-free commitment and its quality-assurance documentation describe the policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not make every part of every game work offline. Multiplayer, connected services, and other online-dependent features are separate from the offline single-player portion. Nor should you assume an offline installer for a newly updated build will appear at the same moment as that build: GOG notes that an installer can become available later.

An offline installer is useful because it gives you an independent way to store and reinstall eligible files. A backup drive can preserve those installer files, but it does not unlock a protected game or change the terms attached to a purchase. Keep the installer and any needed account information in a place you control, and check that the files you have are for the edition you intend to install.

How can I tell what a specific game will require?

Check the exact edition, not just the franchise, publisher, or storefront. Before buying or relying on a game offline, compare five things: the license and account terms, whether authentication is first-run or recurring, whether a second launcher is required, whether you can keep an independent installer, and whether your intended mode depends on online services.

  • Read the storefront listing and DRM notice. Look for third-party DRM or a separate launcher requirement. A Steam listing can disclose that an EA app is required for some Steam-purchased EA games; that should not be generalized to all games or editions.
  • Check the game’s own terms and publisher help. An individual EULA may impose activation or installation conditions, but one game’s terms do not establish a publisher-wide policy.
  • Separate first launch from ongoing access. A requirement to activate once online is not the same as a requirement to stay connected or check in periodically. Confirm which one applies to the exact edition.
  • Identify the mode you need. Offline single-player and online multiplayer can have different requirements within the same game.
  • Look for an independent installer if long-term offline installation matters. Having game files is useful only if the edition can be installed and launched without checks you cannot satisfy.

How should I prepare a game before traveling offline?

Do this while you still have a reliable connection. Preparation reduces avoidable failures, but it cannot make an inherently online game or mode work without its servers.

  1. Confirm the exact game and edition. Read its listing, DRM notice, publisher guidance, and relevant account terms. Note any external launcher or online-only mode.
  2. Install and update the game and its client. Finish pending updates before disconnecting; a required update can prevent a launch if it cannot be downloaded later.
  3. Complete required account linking and first launch online. For Steam, Valve’s instructions call for signing in with “Remember me” enabled and launching each intended game once online before using Offline Mode. EA also requires an online launch before its eligible games can use the app’s Offline Mode.
  4. Set the storefront’s offline mode where applicable. On Steam, use the client’s Go Offline command. Epic says its launcher applies Offline Mode automatically when it starts or runs without connectivity, but eligibility varies by title.
  5. Disconnect and check the mode you actually plan to use. If it fails, diagnose the requirement rather than assuming all DRM behaves the same: the problem may be initial activation, client readiness, a second launcher, or a game mode that is inherently online.

Why might an offline game fail to launch?

Most offline launch failures are easier to diagnose when you separate the software layers involved. A successful download is only one part of readiness; it does not prove the game has completed activation or that every required service is available offline.

  • Initial activation was not completed. Reconnect and launch the game online if its storefront or publisher requires a first online launch.
  • The storefront client is not ready for offline use. Sign in and retain credentials where the client requires it, finish updates, then set or allow the client’s offline mode according to its current help instructions.
  • A second launcher or account check is involved. Review the exact edition’s listing and publisher guidance. A storefront’s offline setting cannot override a separate launcher’s connection requirement.
  • The mode depends on a server. Offline access to a single-player campaign does not establish that multiplayer or connected features will work without internet.
  • The title is not eligible for that storefront’s offline feature. Epic explicitly says not all games support Offline Mode; EA limits its feature to games that do not themselves need a connection.

A disc, copied game folder, or offline-mode toggle alone does not prove that a game is DRM-free. Likewise, the fact that a game launched offline once is not evidence that every future launch or feature will work without a connection.

What should you conclude about ownership and offline access?

Think of a PC game purchase as three separate questions, not one: the terms governing your license, the technical checks imposed by that edition, and the online dependencies of the game mode you want. Steam’s license terms do not establish a universal recurring check for all games; Steam Offline Mode does not eliminate all DRM; and DRM-free does not transfer copyright. If independent offline installation is essential, a DRM-free edition with an available offline installer is a more direct fit—but check the features you need and keep the installer files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my offline save sync when I reconnect?

That depends on the game and storefront; an offline session does not guarantee that a cloud save will upload or reconcile automatically. Epic notes that cloud saves and other online services may be unavailable in Offline Mode, so check the specific game’s save guidance before relying on a cloud copy.

What happens if a game is removed from a store?

Removal from sale and the ability to launch an already licensed copy are not the same question, and the sources cited here do not establish a universal outcome for removed games. The title’s license, launcher dependencies, and any required authentication determine what access remains.

Can I move my Steam game subscription to another account?

Valve’s agreement says a Steam subscription obtained through a retail store cannot simply be registered to another account when access ends. Do not treat a game purchase as a transferable file or assume an account transfer is available.
