PC Game Pass is access, not ownership. You can install and play games from its catalog while your subscription is active and the title remains listed. If you cancel, your subscription expires, or the game leaves the catalog, that access ends. Buying a PC game separately through the Microsoft Store creates a digital entitlement attached to your Microsoft account, although Microsoft’s license terms still govern how it works and require periodic online validation.
That distinction matters when deciding whether to keep subscribing, buy a favorite game, use an Xbox gift card, or expect one purchase to cover both Xbox consoles and Windows. Xbox Play Anywhere titles do provide both platform versions from one purchase; ordinary PC listings do not automatically do so.

PC Game Pass access and a purchased game are different rights
A Game Pass download is a time-limited license to use catalog content. It is not a conversion of the game into an account-owned copy. Xbox describes the condition directly: “Game Pass subscribers enjoy access to games in the library until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library.”

Game Pass checks whether your account has an active entitlement to the catalog item. A separate Store purchase creates a different entitlement that remains associated with your Microsoft account under the Microsoft Store and Xbox service terms.

What the subscription gives you
- Access to the games currently included in the PC Game Pass catalog.
- Permission to download and run those games while your subscription is active and the title is still included.
- The ability to try a broad range of games without buying every title individually.
- Member pricing of up to 20% on select games, downloadable content, and add-ons, according to Xbox’s 2026 offer. The discount is not universal and can vary by item.
What it does not give you
- A perpetual license to every game you downloaded.
- The right to continue playing a title after your subscription ends or the title leaves the catalog.
- A guarantee that a game will remain available in your region, on your plan, or on your platform indefinitely.
- Ownership of add-ons bought separately unless those add-ons carry their own purchase entitlement.
What changes when you buy the game separately
A separate Microsoft Store purchase is the buy-to-own step. The entitlement is recorded against the Microsoft account that completed the transaction. You can normally reinstall the purchased title from that account without maintaining a Game Pass subscription, provided the game is still supported by the relevant Store and service environment.
“Own” here means an account-linked digital license, not an unrestricted copy that can be transferred, resold, or detached from Microsoft’s services. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules and the game publisher’s terms continue to apply. The purchase does not turn the software into a DRM-free installer, and it does not guarantee that every online feature will operate forever.
Account binding is part of the license
The purchasing account is the account that holds the entitlement. Microsoft’s PC sharing documentation states that, on other PCs, “The purchasing account must be signed in to the Microsoft Store app to launch the title.” In practice, that means signing into Windows or the Xbox app with a different account does not automatically transfer the purchase.
Keep the purchasing account secure, retain access to its email and authentication methods, and check which account is active in the Microsoft Store before buying. A purchase made on the wrong Microsoft account can be difficult to use from the account you intended.
Game Pass access versus a bought game at a glance

If you cancel PC Game Pass, do you keep downloaded games?
You keep the files until you remove them, but you do not keep the right to launch them through Game Pass. When the subscription is canceled or expires, the catalog entitlement is no longer active. The installed game may show a purchase prompt, a subscription prompt, or an error instead of starting.

Buying the title after cancellation is a new transaction. If you purchase it with the same Microsoft account, the existing installation may become usable after the Store and Xbox app refresh their licenses; in other cases, the app may ask you to update or reinstall. The download itself is not credited as a purchase.
What happens when a game leaves the catalog?
Catalog removal has the same practical result as subscription expiry for that title: Game Pass access ends even if your subscription remains active. Publishers and Xbox can announce removal dates, and the catalog can differ by country, plan, platform, and time. A game leaving the service does not delete a separately purchased license. If you expect to replay a departing title, buy it before access ends or accept that you will need to purchase it later at the then-current price.
Does a save file survive?
Save data is separate from the Game Pass right to launch the game. If the game supports Xbox cloud saves, your progress can generally be associated with your Xbox profile and become available after a later purchase on the same account. Availability depends on the title and its save implementation, so do not treat a save file as proof of ownership.
What “permanent” means for a purchased Xbox PC game
A bought game is durable in a way a subscription entitlement is not: it is not scheduled to disappear merely because Game Pass rotates its catalog. You can return to the Microsoft Store library and reinstall it using the purchasing account, subject to Microsoft’s current services and license terms.
Durable does not mean unconditional. Digital purchases are licenses, not ownership of Microsoft’s underlying software or servers. Microsoft can require account authentication, enforce regional or age restrictions, and change or discontinue online services under its terms. If a title depends on a separate publisher account, launcher, anti-cheat service, or server infrastructure, those dependencies still apply after purchase.

Periodic license renewal and internet checks
Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation says: “This license must be renewed periodically, which requires an Internet connection; the license isn’t intended to enable permanent offline play.” Therefore, do not buy a digital Xbox PC game on the assumption that one download will run forever on an isolated computer. You may be able to use an offline mode for a period after the account and device have been authorized, but the documentation does not promise an unlimited offline period.

A publisher’s online requirement can be stricter than Microsoft’s Store check.
Does Xbox Play Anywhere include the console version?
For a title carrying the Xbox Play Anywhere designation, yes. Xbox’s program statement is: “Players purchase the console or PC version of your game from any Xbox online store and receive access to both.” One qualifying purchase provides the Xbox console and Windows PC versions, and supported Play Anywhere features can include shared saves, achievements, and add-ons.
The badge matters. A game being sold in the Microsoft Store, or appearing in PC Game Pass, does not by itself make it a Play Anywhere title. If the product page does not identify the program, assume the purchase covers only the platform or edition explicitly listed.
How to verify a Play Anywhere purchase
- Open the game’s Microsoft Store or Xbox product page before checkout.
- Check the platform labels for Windows PC and Xbox consoles.
- Look specifically for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge or wording.
- Review edition, region, publisher-account, and add-on details; deluxe and special editions can have different entitlements.
- After buying, sign into the same Microsoft account on the Xbox console and the Windows PC Xbox app, then check the owned library on each device.
PC requirements and catalog limitations
PC Game Pass is not a universal license for every computer. Xbox requires Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher and the Xbox app for PC for the PC Game Pass experience. Individual games can impose higher hardware, storage, graphics, operating-system, launcher, or account requirements.

Catalog availability varies by time, region, plan, and platform. A title visible to a friend in another country, or on an Xbox console plan, may not be included in your PC catalog. Always open the game’s listing while signed into your account and verify that “PC” is included before starting a large download.
Checks to make before installing
- Confirm that your Windows edition is supported and updated to version 22H2 or later.
- Install or update the Xbox app for PC and sign into the Microsoft account holding the subscription or purchase.
- Check the Microsoft Store app is signed into the purchasing account when launching a bought title.
- Read the product page for PC availability, region restrictions, required launchers, and publisher accounts.
- Compare the game’s storage and hardware requirements with your computer before downloading.
Which option fits your playing habits?
Choose PC Game Pass when breadth matters
The subscription is the better fit when you want to sample many games, play a title for a few weeks, or avoid paying full price for experiments. Its value comes from the number of games you can access during each billing period, not from retaining every installation. It also lets you discover whether a game’s controls, performance, and online community suit you before committing to a purchase.
Buy the game when replaying matters
A separate purchase makes more sense when you expect to return to the game after several months, want access independent of catalog changes, or are building a personal library. It is also the required route if you want a title after canceling Game Pass and do not want to depend on a future catalog return.
Choose a Play Anywhere purchase for two-platform use
If you play on both Xbox and Windows, a qualifying Play Anywhere purchase can be more efficient than buying separate platform versions. Verify the badge before paying; the program applies only to participating titles and does not extend automatically to every Xbox-branded release.

- Start with the catalog listing. Confirm that the title is included in your PC plan, available in your region, and compatible with your Windows version.
- Evaluate the game during your subscription. Test performance, controls, accessibility options, multiplayer requirements, and whether you actually expect to replay it.
- Check the departure information. If Xbox or the publisher has announced that the title is leaving, note the date instead of assuming your subscription preserves it.
- Open the Store product page. Verify PC availability, edition, Play Anywhere status, publisher launcher requirements, and the account currently signed into the Store.
- Compare the member price. PC Game Pass members may see up to 20% off select games, DLC, and add-ons. Treat “up to” as a ceiling: the actual discount depends on the item and promotion.
- Buy with the intended Microsoft account. Confirm the account name before completing checkout because the resulting license is account-bound.
- Refresh the license. Keep the Store and Xbox apps signed into the purchasing account, then launch the game online once so the entitlement can be recognized.
- Plan for offline limits. Do not rely on the purchase as an unlimited offline license; periodic internet validation remains part of Microsoft’s documented model.
Using an Xbox gift card to keep a game
An Xbox gift card can fund the separate Store transaction, but redeeming a gift card is not itself ownership. Xbox states that gift cards are for eligible Microsoft Store purchases within 90 days of redemption. The balance must be redeemed, and you must then select and buy the game you want to keep.

Check the country, currency, denomination, and listing type before purchasing a card. Gift-card availability and redemption rules can differ by market. Once the balance is applied to the correct Microsoft account, use it at checkout for the game, DLC, or add-on that provides the entitlement you want. A gift card cannot convert an existing Game Pass download into a purchased copy without that checkout step.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“It is installed, so I own it.”
Installation only places files on the drive. Check the account’s purchase history or Store library for a purchase entitlement. If the game is listed only as part of Game Pass, it remains subscription access.
“My subscription is active, so every Game Pass game should launch.”
The subscription does not override catalog rotation, regional availability, platform differences, or publisher requirements. Recheck the title’s current listing and your plan when the Xbox app reports that access is unavailable.
“Any Xbox purchase includes PC.”
Only the platforms named on the product page are covered. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge if you need both console and Windows versions.
“Buying it means I can play forever without internet.”
Microsoft documents periodic license renewal and an internet requirement. Connect periodically and review the game’s own offline policy rather than assuming permanent offline operation.
“I can switch accounts after buying.”
The entitlement follows the purchasing Microsoft account. On another PC, Microsoft says that account must be signed into the Microsoft Store app to launch the title. Sign into the correct account before troubleshooting downloads or reinstallations.
“A gift card is the same as buying the game.”
The card supplies payment balance. Ownership-like access begins only after you redeem the balance and complete the eligible Store purchase.
Bottom line for deciding what to pay for
Think of PC Game Pass as a rotating rental-style access pass and a separately bought Xbox PC game as a durable, account-linked license. Subscribe when experimentation and catalog breadth are your priorities. Buy the titles you expect to replay, want to keep after cancellation or catalog removal, or need across Xbox and Windows through Xbox Play Anywhere. In every case, verify the product page, platform, region, account, and offline requirements before checkout.
