Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNeither PC gaming nor handheld gaming is automatically more fun. A conventional gaming PC is a better fit if you enjoy a customizable setup, a larger display, and your choice of keyboard, mouse, or controller. A handheld is a better fit if playing away from a desk and fitting games into short or flexible sessions matter more. The fun comes down to where you play, what you play, and which compromises you mind least.
What makes one format more fun for you?
Start with your actual gaming habits, not a spec sheet. Think about where you have time to play, how long your usual sessions last, which controls feel right, and whether you enjoy adjusting settings or would rather start a game quickly.
- Choose around location: A PC setup is usually centered on a desk or display. A handheld is made to travel between places, though battery life, connectivity, and device comfort still affect where you can use it.
- Choose around controls: PCs offer a choice of keyboard and mouse, a full-size controller, or other peripherals. Handhelds have integrated controls, so grip, weight, and screen size become part of every session.
- Choose around convenience: A permanent PC setup can be ready at home, while a handheld can make away-from-desk or brief sessions easier. How straightforward a handheld feels depends on its software and launcher support.
- Choose around games: Check that the games you care about work with the operating system, storefronts, compatibility settings, and input method you want to use. A library being available in theory does not guarantee the same setup experience on every device.
- Choose around your full budget: PC costs vary with the build, display, peripherals, and upgrade choices. Handheld device costs also vary, and accessories or additional storage can add to the total.
How the main trade-offs compare
| What matters | Conventional gaming PC | Handheld gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where you play | Usually a desk or display setup selected by the owner | Designed for more locations, with battery, connectivity, and comfort as constraints |
| Performance and display | Many component, display, and graphics configurations are possible | Performance and screen capabilities depend on the specific model |
| Controls and comfort | Keyboard and mouse, full-size controller, or other peripherals | Integrated controls; grip, weight, and screen size matter |
| Setup and usability | Customization and a permanent setup, in exchange for needing space and peripherals | Portable play, with usability varying by operating system and launcher support |
| Cost | Depends on the build and the display and peripherals included | Depends on the device; accessories and storage may add cost |
These are decision prompts, not guarantees about every device. Model comparisons illustrate particular trade-offs; they do not test which format people find more enjoyable overall.

Tom’s Guide’s Steam Deck OLED versus ASUS ROG Ally X comparison describes SteamOS as easier to navigate for pick-up-and-play use. Windows offers access to multiple launchers, but navigating them on a small screen can involve more friction. Its battery and benchmark findings reflect reviewer tests under specified conditions; your results can vary with the game, settings, and use.
These examples show why “handheld” is not one uniform experience. One device may feel more streamlined, while another may suit someone who values performance or access to a broader set of launchers. Neither comparison establishes that a handheld is more fun than a PC.

A practical way to decide
- List your common gaming situations. Note whether you usually play at a desk, on a couch, while traveling, or in short breaks at home.
- Pick the games and controls that matter most. Consider whether they need a keyboard and mouse, whether a controller suits them, and whether the relevant handheld supports the game and launcher in the way you want.
- Decide which compromise is easier to live with. A PC asks for a dedicated setup and space; a handheld makes portability a priority, with model-specific limits to performance, display, comfort, and battery behavior.
- Compare complete setups, not device labels. For a PC, include the display and peripherals you need. For a handheld, consider any accessories or storage you expect to add. Prices and availability depend on region and change over time.
- Favor the format you will use more often. The best fit is the one that makes it easier for you to enjoy the games you like, in the places and session lengths you actually have.
What handheld sales say about popularity
Omdia estimated that 19.3 million dedicated handheld gaming hardware units were sold through to consumers worldwide in 2023, using its Games Handheld Database. Its report forecast 29.3 million units by 2028; that figure was a forecast, not a confirmed result. Sales indicate the scale of the category, but they do not measure whether handheld or PC gaming is more fun for individual players. Omdia’s market forecast
