If parries feel late or fail to register in a PC action game, first find out whether the problem is delayed response, an intermittent input, or a mistimed defensive move. Check the display and connection, compare a known-good input device, and test against the same attack in a safe offline encounter before changing several settings or buying hardware. Local input lag can happen offline; it is not the same as online network lag.
Why can a parry fail even when the game seems responsive?
A failed parry is not, by itself, proof of input lag. The game may be responding consistently while the press misses its particular defensive timing rule. Or the press may be arriving late along the PC-to-display path, disappearing intermittently because of a device or mapping issue, or being affected by unstable frame delivery.

Separate those possibilities before troubleshooting. In the same safe encounter, try a simple action such as opening a menu, then try to guard or parry the same enemy attack several times. Notice whether ordinary actions also seem delayed, whether particular presses do not register at all, or whether the defensive action happens but does not produce a deflect. This observation narrows the next check; it does not identify the cause on its own.
| What you observe | What it points toward | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Many actions seem consistently late, including simple actions | Possible delay in the local input-to-display path or frame delivery | Confirm display settings, then compare presentation options and graphics load |
| Some presses vanish or response changes between attempts | Possible device, connection, port, power, or mapping issue | Compare a known-good device and inspect connections and bindings |
| Guard responds, but a deflect fails against one attack | The game’s timing rule or the action chosen may be the issue | Check that game’s defensive instructions and compare attempts against the same cue |
| The problem appears only during online play | Network conditions may be relevant in addition to local responsiveness | Compare with an offline or otherwise controlled encounter if the game allows it |
What should I check before changing settings?
Start with a repeatable baseline: the same game, character, input device, display, and enemy attack. Choose an offline encounter when possible so network variation is not part of the comparison. Change one setting at a time, repeat the same action, and note what changed. If the enemy’s cue, camera angle, or action differs between attempts, the comparison is less useful.

Describe the failure precisely
- Delayed response: the game eventually reacts, but the on-screen response seems late. Check the display and rendering path first.
- Missing press: the action sometimes does not happen at all. Check the input device, connection, selected binding, and any input-remapping layer.
- Failed deflect: guard or another response appears, but the attack is not deflected. Verify the game’s rule before treating this as a technical delay.
Do not diagnose from one missed attempt. A useful comparison is a series against the same attack cue, with enough consistency to distinguish a pattern from a single timing error. There is no established parry-window figure that applies across PC action games, and each game’s buffering, hold, release, and animation rules may differ.
Keep a short change log
Write down the setting or device you changed and whether the symptom became more consistent, less consistent, or simply different. This avoids confusing a timing adjustment with a connection fix, and makes it easier to restore the original configuration if a change introduces tearing, instability, or mapping problems. The goal is to isolate a cause, not to accumulate latency-related tweaks.

How do I check the display and refresh rate?
Confirm that the PC and display are actually operating at the intended refresh rate, and enable Game Mode on a TV. These checks are free and should come before shopping for a display. A TV’s image processing can add delay; a monitor’s advertised pixel response time, by contrast, is not a measurement of total input lag.
Verify the active display mode
Look at the refresh-rate selection in the operating system and the display’s own information or settings, then confirm that the game is using the expected display. Available labels and paths vary by Windows version, graphics hardware, and display, so use the options actually shown on your system rather than assuming a particular menu path. A high-refresh display does not help if it is configured to run at a lower rate.
If the current setup uses a TV, turn on its Game Mode and avoid unnecessary picture-processing features where the TV provides that choice. If the picture is being sent through a wireless display connection, compare with a direct wired display connection. These steps target display-side delay; they cannot remove a hardware limitation that remains in the display itself.
Know what a response-time number means
Pixel response time describes how quickly pixels transition under a specified measurement method. It does not tell you the complete time from a button press to a visible response. When comparing displays for a confirmed display-side constraint, look for independently measured input latency, supported variable-refresh-rate range, and connection compatibility rather than treating a response-time claim as a substitute.

Should I turn V-Sync off or use VRR?
There is no single presentation setting that is best for every game and PC. Turning V-Sync off is a useful diagnostic because it can change responsiveness, but it may increase visible tearing. If the display and game support variable refresh rate (VRR), Adaptive Sync, or G-Sync, compare those options and a suitable frame cap while paying attention to both response and image stability.
Compare the trade-offs
| Option to compare | Potential benefit | Trade-off or condition |
|---|---|---|
| V-Sync off | Can help determine whether the current synchronization setting contributes to the perceived delay | Tearing may increase; it is not a universal final recommendation |
| Supported VRR or Adaptive Sync | Can coordinate display refresh with changing frame delivery | Requires compatible display, GPU, connection, and game support |
| Frame cap or stable higher frame rate | Can be worth comparing when the game allows it and delivery is unstable | The appropriate cap depends on the setup; no universal value is established here |
| V-Sync, G-Sync, and Reflex together | Steam recommends this combination for compatible Counter-Strike 2 systems | That game-specific guidance should not be copied blindly to another game or configuration |
NVIDIA describes latency-versus-tearing trade-offs among synchronization options. Its guidance also discusses Reflex combinations, while Steam’s Counter-Strike 2 support guidance is specifically for compatible systems running that game. A combination that is appropriate there is not proof that the same settings are best in a different action game.
Compare modes instead of assuming fullscreen wins
If the game supports both exclusive fullscreen and borderless windowed mode, compare them under the same encounter and display settings. Do not assume an older recommendation that one mode is always faster remains true on every current Windows setup. Keep the mode that produces a more consistent, usable result on your system, taking tearing and frame pacing into account.
Intel’s support article, last reviewed July 17, 2026, gives 59 FPS on a 60 Hz display and trying 120+ FPS as illustrative approaches to compare. Those are examples, not a promise of a particular latency reduction or improved parry rate. A higher frame rate can be useful to try when the PC can deliver it consistently, but an unstable workload may undermine that goal.
Can graphics settings or NVIDIA Reflex reduce delay?
If frame delivery is unstable, lower demanding graphics settings and compare again. Where both the game and GPU support NVIDIA Reflex, test the game’s Reflex option. NVIDIA presents its driver Low Latency Mode as a fallback when Reflex is unavailable; do not assume that enabling both on top of each other will improve the result.
Use the game’s own option when it offers Reflex support, and check that the setting is actually available for the current game and graphics hardware. Menu names and support vary, so an absent option is not evidence that the installation is broken. If Reflex is unavailable, the driver setting is a possible alternative to investigate, not a guaranteed fix.

Reduce graphics demands only when the symptom suggests unstable delivery or the system is struggling to maintain a consistent frame rate. Change a limited number of settings, then repeat the same action. The objective is a useful comparison; adding unrelated performance tweaks at the same time makes it harder to tell which change mattered.
How can I tell whether the controller or keyboard is the problem?
Compare the current input device with a known-good controller or keyboard using the same game action and encounter. If presses disappear, response varies between attempts, or a controller works differently on different ports, investigate the device and connection before changing parry timing. A wired connection can be a useful comparison when supported, but it is not automatically faster on every modern device.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck the connection and port
- Confirm the connection is supported. For a controller that supports USB input, use a cable that carries data, not just charging, if you are comparing a wired connection. Check connector compatibility for the controller and PC.
- Try another USB port. This is especially useful if the response changes by port, the connection drops, or inputs are intermittent. Steam documents USB scheduling or contention as one possible explanation for device issues, not as a diagnosis for every missed press.
- Compare wired and wireless modes where available. Keep the game, action, and other settings the same. A result on one device does not establish a universal advantage for cables or wireless connections.
- Inspect the physical input. Compare another button or another known-good device. If the failure follows one particular physical control, that is different evidence from a delay affecting every action.
A comparison with another device can identify whether the symptom follows the original controller or keyboard. It does not, by itself, measure milliseconds or prove that a purchase would improve parry success. A PC-compatible wired gamepad or a controller-compatible USB data cable may be relevant only if a known-good-device or wired-connection comparison establishes a reason to try one.
Check bindings and input translation
Inspect the game’s binding for guard or parry and check any active Steam Input configuration or other remapping layer. A translated gamepad input can be intentional, but conflicting configurations may cause unexpected behavior. Activision specifically notes potential Steam/game configuration conflicts in Sekiro. That does not establish that Steam Input inherently adds a particular amount of delay.
For a clean comparison, confirm which physical button is bound to the action, whether the game recognizes the intended device, and whether multiple layers are assigning or emulating that input. If changing a mapping fixes a missing press, keep that finding separate from any change in perceived display responsiveness.
How do I know whether the parry timing itself is wrong?
First identify the action the game expects: a press, a held guard, a release, or another defensive move. Then compare attempts against the same attack cue and observe whether the game guards, deflects, or does nothing. The correct timing and behavior are game-specific; no universal parry-window number can be applied to this whole category.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice illustrates why the distinction matters. Its official web manual says the player can deflect by “pressing the guard button the moment before a blow lands,” while holding the control guards. This is a rule for Sekiro, not a template for every action game. Another game may define its timing, buffering, or animation rules differently, so consult that game’s instructions before changing hardware or settings to compensate for an assumed timing rule.
If ordinary guard works but the deflect does not, note whether the same attack produces the same result consistently. If only one enemy move is difficult, compare the cue and required defensive action for that move. If several ordinary actions also seem delayed, return to the local display, rendering, and input checks rather than assuming every failure is a parry-timing mistake.
What can latency tools actually tell me?
Use a tool only for the part of the chain it measures. NVIDIA FrameView 1.7 documents average FPS, 1% low FPS, and PC Latency reporting where supported. Its PC Latency measurement excludes controller and display delay, so a change in that value alone does not prove that the full button-to-display path improved—or that parries will succeed more often.
Record repeatable frame-rate or frame-time observations and, if available, PC Latency before and after one change. Keep the same scene and conditions where possible. Interpret the result narrowly: a PC Latency reading is about the PC portion reported by the tool, not a complete controller-to-screen measurement. Do not call an unperformed comparison a benchmark or describe a measurement that was not made.
NVIDIA’s 2020-era optimization guide states that 125 Hz mouse polling adds approximately 3 ms of average system latency compared with 1,000 Hz. This is a mouse-focused claim from NVIDIA, not an independently established gamepad result, so it should not be treated as a general parry fix or a reason to center troubleshooting on polling-rate changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is new hardware worth considering?
Consider a display or input-device change only after the free configuration checks and comparisons identify a remaining hardware constraint. A variable-refresh-rate gaming monitor may address a confirmed display limitation if it is compatible with the PC and game, but it cannot correct the wrong defensive timing, conflicting bindings, or intermittent controller presses.

For a display, compare independently measured input latency, VRR support and range, and connection compatibility. For a controller, use a known-good-device comparison first; for a cable, confirm data and connector compatibility. The available evidence does not establish that any particular monitor or controller model improves parry success, nor that wired input is always faster. Buy only to address the specific limitation your comparisons reveal.
What order should I troubleshoot in?
Use this sequence to keep the diagnosis understandable and avoid spending money before checking settings that cost nothing.
- Reproduce the symptom offline if possible. Use one safe encounter and the same attack cue. Note whether all actions seem late, presses disappear, or only a deflect fails.
- Confirm display configuration. Check the active refresh rate, enable TV Game Mode where relevant, and compare a direct wired display connection if the current one is wireless.
- Compare presentation settings. Try V-Sync off as a diagnostic; assess tearing. If supported, compare VRR or Adaptive Sync, a suitable frame cap, and the modes the game provides.
- Check frame delivery and supported Reflex settings. Reduce demanding graphics settings if delivery is unstable. Try the game’s Reflex option where supported; treat driver Low Latency Mode as a fallback when Reflex is unavailable.
- Isolate the input device. Compare a known-good controller or keyboard, a different USB port if appropriate, and supported wired and wireless modes.
- Inspect bindings and remapping. Verify the in-game action binding and any Steam Input or other input-translation configuration.
- Verify the game’s defensive rule. Establish what the game expects for that move and compare attempts against the same cue before concluding that a technical delay is responsible.
- Record narrowly. Note the outcome of each change and use FPS, frame-time, or PC Latency data only within the limits of what the measurement covers.
Stop when the evidence points to a specific layer, or when the remaining issue is more plausibly the game’s rule than a device delay. If no single comparison changes the symptom, that does not prove there is no local latency; it means these checks have not isolated a cause. Exact parry windows, input buffers, and animation-cancel rules require the specific game and cannot be inferred for PC action games as a group.
How we picked
This is a troubleshooting sequence, not a ranked list of products or guaranteed fixes. The order prioritizes repeatable symptom identification and free display checks, then compares presentation, rendering, device, mapping, and game-rule causes. It favors checks that separate likely causes while avoiding unsupported claims about universal parry timing, wired-controller advantages, or a measured improvement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does input lag still happen when I play offline?
Yes. Offline play removes online network conditions from that encounter, but the local input, PC, and display path still exists. An offline comparison can help separate local responsiveness from an online-only symptom, though it cannot identify the precise local cause by itself.
Can a faster monitor fix missed parries?
It may help only if the display is a confirmed part of the problem and the replacement is compatible with the rest of the setup. A display cannot correct a conflicting button mapping or a game-specific timing mistake.
Is a higher mouse polling rate the answer for a gamepad?
The approximately 3 ms comparison cited by NVIDIA concerns mouse polling, not a demonstrated gamepad improvement. It is not a basis for assuming a controller’s polling rate is causing missed deflects.
Why does guard work but parry does not?
Some games assign different behavior to a held guard and a timed deflect, as Sekiro’s manual illustrates. Check the instructions for the specific game and move; the same distinction or timing rule should not be assumed elsewhere.
