A PC that will not boot after an SSD upgrade usually has one of two different problems: the firmware cannot detect the drive, or it detects it but cannot find a valid boot entry. Check those in that order. First confirm normal POST and that the SSD appears in BIOS/UEFI; then select its Windows Boot Loader entry, match UEFI or Legacy mode to the Windows installation, and verify that the replacement actually contains an operating system. Only after those checks should you use Windows Recovery tools such as Startup Repair or BOOTREC.
Why won’t my PC boot after installing an SSD?
The failure point is normally clear once you separate drive detection from Windows booting. A drive missing from BIOS/UEFI points to seating, cabling, interface compatibility, motherboard support, firmware, or physical damage. A drive that is listed but will not start Windows usually has a boot-order, UEFI/Legacy-mode, empty-drive, clone, or boot-file problem.

Does the PC reach BIOS or UEFI?
Disconnect USB sticks, external disks, memory-card readers, and other unnecessary peripherals, then power on. If you can enter the firmware setup or see a normal manufacturer logo and POST, continue with the SSD checks below. If there is no display, no normal POST behavior, or the machine freezes before showing a boot-device menu, treat it as a preboot hardware or firmware fault rather than a Windows repair problem.

What a preboot failure means
- A loose M.2 module, SATA data cable, or SATA power plug can stop enumeration.
- An M.2 slot may support SATA drives but not NVMe PCIe drives, or the reverse.
- The module may be the wrong physical length or key for the slot.
- Older boards may lack NVMe boot support or the UEFI capability required to start from that drive.
- PCIe lane sharing can disable or change an M.2 slot when another expansion slot or port is populated.
- A damaged drive, connector, or motherboard is possible and requires a controlled alternate-device test.
Shut the computer down, switch off the power supply where applicable, remove the AC cable, and discharge residual power before opening the case or reseating hardware. On a laptop, follow the model’s service instructions and disconnect its battery when the manufacturer permits it.
Is the new SSD listed in BIOS or UEFI?
Open the firmware setup (commonly with Delete, F2, F10, or Esc during startup) and look under Storage, NVMe Configuration, SATA Information, or a similar page. Menu names differ by motherboard and notebook model.
If the SSD is not listed
- Power off completely and reseat the M.2 card. It should slide fully into the connector before being secured with its screw; do not press on the top of the module while tightening.
- For a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, reseat both the data cable and the power lead. Try a different motherboard SATA port and a known-good data cable.
- Confirm the drive interface. NVMe uses PCIe lanes; SATA M.2 drives use the SATA controller. An M.2 shape alone does not guarantee interchangeability.
- Check the motherboard manual for supported M.2 lengths, disabled ports, lane-sharing rules, and whether the slot accepts bootable NVMe devices.
- Inspect the connector and drive for bent contacts, cracked boards, or visible damage. Test the SSD in a compatible second system or enclosure if available.
- Update the motherboard firmware only according to its manufacturer’s procedure and with stable power. A firmware update can add storage compatibility, but an interrupted update can make the board unusable.
Intel’s troubleshooting guidance emphasizes checking system requirements, motherboard support, correct connectors and ports, physical damage, alternate-drive tests, and BIOS updates. On older systems, the absence of NVMe boot support or UEFI can be a hard compatibility limit; a firmware update may not add support if the board’s hardware cannot provide it.
If the SSD is listed
Stop replacing hardware for the moment. Detection means the firmware can communicate with the drive, but it does not prove that Windows is installed, that the clone is complete, or that the firmware is selecting the correct boot files. Continue with boot-entry and installation-mode checks.
How do I make Windows boot from the new SSD?
In the firmware’s Boot or Boot Priority page, select the operating-system entry associated with the new drive. For a UEFI installation this is usually named Windows Boot Loader followed by the SSD model, or an entry explicitly prefixed with UEFI.

- Remove USB installation media and external storage while testing, so the computer cannot select an old installer or recovery disk.
- Move the new SSD’s Windows Boot Loader entry above the old disk, USB devices, optical media, and network boot.
- Save changes and restart. Use the one-time boot menu if you want to test the entry without permanently changing priority.
- If the SSD appears only as a raw model name and has no operating-system entry, check whether Windows was installed in the expected mode and whether its EFI system partition exists.
A PCIe SSD can be displayed through a Windows Boot Loader entry rather than as a directly bootable model name after a UEFI installation. If the old disk remains connected, the firmware may continue choosing its loader even though the new SSD contains the newer Windows installation.

Should I use UEFI or Legacy/CSM mode?
Use the same firmware mode that was used when Windows was installed. Microsoft explains that a system normally continues booting in its installation mode and recommends UEFI for new installations. Firmware can show separate UEFI and BIOS/Legacy choices for the same disk or installation media.
Signs of a mode mismatch
- The SSD is visible in storage information but no boot entry appears.
- The drive boots when Legacy/CSM is enabled but not when the firmware is set to UEFI, or the reverse.
- A cloned disk works in the source computer but reports no boot device in the replacement system.
- Windows installation media lists the disk differently depending on which boot option you choose.
Do not switch modes casually on an existing installation. Changing from Legacy to UEFI (or the reverse) can make a previously working Windows installation unbootable. Back up important files and record your recovery options first. If you are deliberately converting an installation, use Microsoft’s supported conversion process for your Windows version rather than changing one firmware toggle and hoping the loader adapts.
Is the replacement SSD blank, or was the clone made correctly?
A brand-new SSD contains no operating system until you install or clone one. If the firmware sees the drive but immediately returns to setup, check this basic possibility before repairing boot files. MSI’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls for verifying that an operating system was installed on the replacement.
For a clean Windows installation
Boot Windows installation media in the intended mode (normally the entry beginning with UEFI), select the new SSD, and create or select the required partitions. Keep the old system disk disconnected during installation when practical. Windows can otherwise place the EFI or boot files on the old disk, leaving the new SSD dependent on a drive you plan to remove.

For a cloned installation
Confirm that the clone includes the Windows partition and the small system partitions required by its boot mode. A clone can contain every personal file yet still fail because the EFI system partition, Microsoft Reserved partition, or boot configuration was omitted or copied to another disk. After cloning, shut down and disconnect the source drive for the first test; this proves that the new SSD has a self-contained boot path.
If the clone boots only when the old drive is attached, the old disk probably holds the active boot files. Recreate the boot files on the new SSD from Windows Recovery, then test again with the old drive disconnected.
How do I repair Windows when BIOS detects the SSD?
Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) only after the SSD is visible in firmware and the boot entry and mode are correct. Start from Windows installation media, choose Repair your computer → Troubleshoot → Advanced options, and work from least destructive to most specific.
Run Startup Repair first
Select Startup Repair. Microsoft states that “The Startup Repair tool automatically fixes many common issues.” It examines common startup components and records a repair log. Restart after it finishes, with external storage removed.
Use Command Prompt for a specific boot-loader error
Open Advanced options → Command Prompt when Startup Repair cannot resolve messages such as “BOOTMGR is missing,” a blinking cursor after POST, or a damaged BCD notice. The traditional BOOTREC sequence is:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
These commands address boot records and the Boot Configuration Data store; they cannot repair a drive absent from firmware, a failed controller, or an incompatible slot. On a UEFI installation, identify the EFI system partition in DiskPart, assign it a temporary letter, and recreate the loader with the Windows partition letter confirmed in WinRE:
diskpart
list volume
select volume <EFI volume number>
assign letter=S
exit
bcdboot C:Windows /s S: /f UEFI
WinRE may assign Windows a letter other than C:. Use dir C:Windows, dir D:Windows, and similar checks to locate the actual installation before running bcdboot. Do not format a partition or delete the old disk’s data merely because a repair command fails.
What if Windows reaches the logo but then crashes?
A system that gets past firmware and displays the Windows logo has entered a later boot stage. An “INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE” stop error, storage-driver failure, or crash after the logo is different from “no boot device.” Repeatedly changing boot order will not fix a kernel-stage driver or controller problem.

- Undo a recently installed storage or chipset driver, or use the motherboard and SSD manufacturer’s supported driver guidance.
- Check whether the controller mode (such as AHCI or RAID) changed when the SSD was installed; restore the mode used by the original Windows installation unless you are following a documented migration procedure.
- Use System Restore or uninstall the latest update when the failure began immediately after that change.
Back up data before experimenting with controller settings. BitLocker-protected systems may request the recovery key after a firmware, boot-mode, or hardware change; keep that key available before you start.

If the computer has only one internal drive bay, connect the target SSD externally while cloning. A 2.5-inch SATA drive requires a USB-to-SATA adapter. An NVMe M.2 drive requires an NVMe M.2 USB enclosure. These are not interchangeable: an enclosure must match the SSD’s protocol and physical size.

After cloning through an adapter or enclosure, install the SSD internally, disconnect the source drive for the first boot, and verify the new Windows Boot Loader entry. USB enclosures are useful for migration, but they are not proof that the internal slot supports booting that drive; the motherboard’s slot wiring and firmware still determine compatibility.
Which symptom points to which fix?
| What you see | Most likely area | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| No display or POST; cannot reach firmware | Hardware or firmware | Power, seating, connectors, compatible slot, memory, motherboard support, and firmware update procedure. |
| SSD absent from BIOS/UEFI | Detection and compatibility | Reseat the module, try another cable or port, verify NVMe versus SATA support, inspect for damage, and test another system. |
| SSD listed, but no Windows Boot Loader | Boot mode or missing loader | Match UEFI/Legacy to the installation and verify that the EFI/system partition exists on the new disk. |
| PC always enters BIOS | Wrong priority or no bootable installation | Put the new SSD’s Windows Boot Loader first, remove USB media, and confirm Windows was installed or cloned. |
| “BOOTMGR missing,” BCD error, or blinking cursor | Boot files | Run Startup Repair, then targeted BOOTREC or BCD repair from WinRE. |
| Windows logo followed by an inaccessible-boot-device stop | Kernel-stage driver or controller configuration | Use WinRE, Safe Mode, restore points, and the correct storage-mode or driver guidance. |
How can I prevent the problem during the next SSD upgrade?
- Record the current firmware mode, controller mode, and boot-entry names before removing the old drive.
- Save important files and your BitLocker recovery key to a separate, accessible location.
- Read the motherboard or notebook manual for M.2 protocol, length, lane-sharing, and NVMe-boot requirements.
- For a clean installation, disconnect other drives so the new SSD receives its own boot files.
- For a clone, verify the system/EFI partitions and test with the source disk disconnected.
- Keep Windows installation media available before opening the computer.
- Change one variable at a time and write down the original firmware settings so you can reverse a failed experiment.
Exact slot wiring, menu labels, PCIe lane allocation, and NVMe support vary by model. If you need a definitive answer about a particular computer, identify its exact motherboard or notebook model and firmware version before buying an M.2 NVMe SSD.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a new SSD show in BIOS but still be dead?
Yes. Firmware detection only proves that the controller responds; it does not verify readable partitions, a complete clone, or healthy Windows files. Confirm the disk’s partitions from Windows Setup or another computer and check its health with the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility.
Why does my cloned SSD boot only when the old drive is connected?
The cloning process may have left the EFI system partition or boot configuration on the old disk. Shut down, disconnect the old drive, start WinRE from installation media, and recreate the loader on the new SSD after identifying its Windows and EFI partitions.
Will changing from Legacy to UEFI erase my files?
Changing the setting alone does not normally erase data, but it can make the existing installation unbootable because the partition and loader formats differ. Back up first and use a supported Windows conversion procedure if you need to change modes.
What should I do if the SSD disappears after the PC warms up?
That pattern suggests a connection, thermal, power, or drive fault rather than a boot-order mistake. Reseat the drive, check mounting and cooling, test another slot or system, and copy important data before relying on the SSD again.
