windows.media.mediacontrol.dll is a Microsoft Windows Runtime system DLL used by Windows media-control functionality. If windows.media.mediacontrol.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, identify the failing program before changing system files.
Check these details first:
- Which application or game shows the error?
- Does the error appear when Windows starts, or only when one program opens?
- Did it begin after Windows Update, an application update, antivirus cleanup, malware removal, or cleanup software?
- Are you using Windows 10 or Windows 11, and is it an N edition?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does the file exist in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
- 64-bit system file:
%WINDIR%System32Windows.Media.MediaControl.dll - 32-bit Windows component:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64Windows.Media.MediaControl.dll
Do not infer that System32 contains 32-bit files. On 64-bit Windows, it contains native 64-bit system files, while 32-bit system files are handled through SysWOW64.

What the error messages mean
You may see one of these loader messages:
- “The program can’t start because windows.media.mediacontrol.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because windows.media.mediacontrol.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting windows.media.mediacontrol.dll.”
- “Error loading windows.media.mediacontrol.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “windows.media.mediacontrol.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all prove that the named file is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that another dependency required by the DLL is missing. Likewise, “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, invalid signing, or a damaged dependency chain.
The file is associated with the Windows Runtime MediaControl API, which provides media focus and transport-control functionality. Microsoft documents MediaControl but recommends SystemMediaTransportControls for newer Windows development.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave protected Windows components in an inconsistent state. Start with Windows Update before replacing anything manually.
Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected application again.
Windows 10
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If the error disappears, the issue was probably an incomplete Windows component update. If Windows reports that everything is current but the error remains, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then scans protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Run DISM first because SFC may need the repaired component store as its source.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program that reported the DLL error.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair some files. A successful repair normally ends with the affected application opening without the loader message.
If SFC says it could not repair all files, restart once and run the DISM and SFC commands again. If the same files repeatedly fail repair, continue to System Restore or Windows recovery rather than copying a replacement DLL from the internet.
Manually checking component versions and repeating SFC/DISM can be difficult when Windows has several damaged files. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair features require the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair remains the primary fix.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
First confirm that the computer is online, then install pending Windows updates and restart. Run the command again from an elevated Command Prompt.
If DISM still cannot repair the image, use Microsoft’s current-version Windows reinstall option where it is available:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Recovery on Windows 11.
- Look for the option to fix problems using Windows Update or reinstall the current Windows version.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Back up important files before starting.
The wording and availability of this recovery option can vary by Windows release. If it is unavailable or fails, use the Windows recovery environment or installation media for an in-place repair.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows works normally and only one program reports windows.media.mediacontrol.dll, the application may be damaged, incompatible with the installed Windows build, or missing another dependency.
First try the application’s own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu button or entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
For a game or launcher, open its settings and look for Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair. The exact label depends on the vendor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf no repair option exists:
- Back up the application’s settings and saved data if necessary.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official publisher or launcher.
- Install the latest version.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Test the program before restoring optional modifications or plugins.
Reinstalling the affected program is especially appropriate when the error began immediately after an application update. It is not a reason to download windows.media.mediacontrol.dll into the application folder. A Windows system DLL should normally be serviced by Windows.
Fix 4: Check Windows N and install media components
Windows 10 N and Windows 11 N exclude certain media technologies. If the affected program depends on Windows media functions, the missing media components can contribute to startup or playback failures.
Check your edition:
- Press Windows + I.
- Open System > About.
- Review Windows specifications.
- Check whether the edition name ends in N.
Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows 11 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Install pending Windows updates and test the application.
Install it on Windows 10 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose Add a feature.
- Select Media Feature Pack.
- Choose Install.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
The Media Feature Pack restores media technologies excluded from N editions. It is a conditional remedy for media-function failures, not a guaranteed direct replacement for every missing copy of Windows.Media.MediaControl.dll. Run DISM and SFC as well if the file is absent or corrupted.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and run a malware scan
Security software may quarantine a system file after a false detection. Malware removal can also leave Windows components damaged.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the DLL or a Windows system component.
- Do not restore the file solely because an application requests it.
- If the detection appears suspicious, run Scan options > Full scan.
- After the scan, run DISM and SFC again.
Only restore a quarantined file when the security product identifies it as a genuine Microsoft system file and the computer is not showing signs of active malware. SFC and DISM should still repair the protected Windows copy afterward.
If a third-party antivirus was recently removed, temporarily check whether its quarantine store still contains the file. Do not disable protection permanently to make the application launch.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it must load compatible dependencies. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64.
To check an application’s architecture, consult its official documentation or installation folder. Task Manager may also show (32 bit) beside a running 32-bit process on some Windows versions.

Windows.Media.MediaControl.dll. - Repeat with
%WINDIR%SysWOW64if using 64-bit Windows.
If the file exists but the application still fails, the named DLL may not be the real problem. Another dependency may be missing, or the application may be incompatible with the installed Windows build. Check the program’s event log, crash report, and vendor support information.
Historical inventories show several Windows build-specific versions, but those are observed examples rather than a complete official version list. Do not select the newest file from a random source based only on its version number.

A graphics, audio, or media driver is not the primary fix for this Windows system DLL. Consider a driver update only when the failure began after a driver change, affects media playback broadly, or appears with a separate driver-related error.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and relevant media-device categories.
- Right-click the device showing a warning icon.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the error began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available. Obtain drivers from the hardware manufacturer when Windows cannot find a suitable driver.
Finding the correct driver across multiple device models can involve checking hardware IDs and comparing package versions. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies what it finds, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the problem started immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or software installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs without normally changing personal files. It does not replace a backup, so save current work before proceeding.
When to use Windows recovery
Use an in-place Windows repair when DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, Windows Update cannot complete, or several unrelated system components are damaged. Back up important files first and use Microsoft installation media or the supported reinstall option for the same Windows edition and architecture.
A clean installation should be the last resort because it removes applications and can remove data if the disk is reformatted. If Windows cannot boot normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup, or use Windows installation media, then choose the appropriate repair option.
Do not download or register this DLL manually
Do not download windows.media.mediacontrol.dll from a random DLL-hosting website. The file may contain malware, have the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, have an invalid signature, or simply fail because another dependency is missing. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder also bypasses Windows servicing.
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It works with DLLs that explicitly provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. Windows Runtime components use activation mechanisms rather than requiring users to register the system DLL manually, so running regsvr32 windows.media.mediacontrol.dll is generally inappropriate.

FAQ
Is windows.media.mediacontrol.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows Runtime system DLL associated with Microsoft’s media-control functionality.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX runtime?
No. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or third-party game DLL. Reinstall those runtimes only when the error names a corresponding runtime or the application reports additional missing dependencies.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Windows files vary by build, servicing level, architecture, and installation state. Repair the local Windows image with DISM and SFC instead.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does the error mention a missing module when the file exists?
The named file may depend on another module that is absent or damaged. A present file does not prove that its complete dependency chain is healthy.
Does installing the Media Feature Pack always fix it?
No. It is relevant to Windows N media functionality, but it is not proven to directly restore every missing copy of this DLL. Use it alongside Windows repair when the edition and symptoms fit.
What information should I provide if the problem continues?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and build, the affected application, whether the problem is system-wide or limited to one program, whether the file exists in the expected directory, and whether DISM or SFC reported repairs or failures.
