In Path of Exile 2, Persistent Buff Skill Gems are Spirit gems that grant persistent skills—not ordinary active skill gems. Choose or level one with an Uncut Spirit Gem, activate the skill through the Skills Panel, and it reserves Spirit while active. Its reservation, requirements, and effect depend on the individual gem.
What Persistent Buff Skill Gems are
An Uncut Spirit Gem can create a Persistent Buff Skill Gem or level one you already have. These gems grant persistent skills, which remain active rather than being used like a typical attack or spell. The game’s community-maintained list of Spirit gems includes examples such as Arctic Armour, Time of Need, Alchemist’s Boon, and Trinity; those examples have different effects and are not a complete authoritative roster.

How to activate and manage one
- Use an Uncut Spirit Gem to create a Persistent Buff Skill Gem, or use it to level an existing gem.
- Open the Skills Panel and activate the persistent skill there.
- Check the gem’s in-game description for its Spirit reservation, requirements, and any conditions on its effect. The skill reserves Spirit while active.
Specific costs, requirements, and behavior vary by gem. Check the current in-game description and relevant patch context before planning a build around exact values.
How the duplicate-skill exception works
The official Path of Exile forum page reproduces the 0.3.0 rule that duplicate Skill Gems cannot be socketed into main skill sockets, with skills socketed into Persistent Buff Skill Gems excluded from that limit. How to compare two gems
There is no supported ranking of the category’s best gem or complete current numerical comparison. For a useful comparison, read both in-game descriptions and check:
- Spirit reservation
- Level and attribute requirements
- Weapon or activation constraints
- The persistent effect
- Conditional or triggered behavior
Because the community-maintained gem list and mechanics overview can be version-sensitive, verify details against the game’s current descriptions rather than treating a list as definitive. The Persistent Skills overview provides additional community-maintained mechanics context.
