Persona 5 Royal vs Persona 3 Reload: Which Modern Persona Game Should You Buy?

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Buy Persona 5 Royal first if you want the broadest, most immediately stylish introduction to modern Persona. Its Phantom Thieves premise, expanded Royal story arc, extra cutscenes and alternate endings make it the safer all-round choice for newcomers. Choose Persona 3 Reload instead when a darker coming-of-age story about the Dark Hour, friendship and confronting painful truths matters more than having the most expansive entry point.

Both are substantial role-playing games, but they aim at different moods. The best purchase depends less on which game is universally “better” and more on whether you want a rebellious heist narrative or a melancholy supernatural drama, and which platforms and post-game content you need.

The short answer

Persona 5 Royal is the better first purchase for most players who have never played a Persona game. Atlus presents it as a stylish campaign in which Joker and the Phantom Thieves break free from the chains of modern society and stage heists inside the minds of corrupt adults. Royal adds a new story arc, additional cutscenes and alternate endings to that foundation.

Persona 3 Reload is the better fit if you want a more somber story. Its transfer-student protagonist discovers the hidden hour between days, awakens Persona power, investigates the Dark Hour and fights alongside friends while confronting fate and painful truths. Atlus calls Reload “a captivating reimagining of the genre-defining RPG, reborn for the modern era.”

There is no reliable official runtime or current, region-wide price comparison that establishes a winner. Treat the games as different narrative experiences rather than trying to decide from an assumed number of hours or a sale price that may disappear.

What Persona 5 Royal is offering

A rebellious heist story

Persona 5 Royal puts you in the role of Joker, the masked leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. The central fantasy is infiltration: the group enters distorted mental worlds created by corrupt adults and stages metaphorical heists to force a change in their behavior. That premise gives the game a bright, defiant surface even when its subjects are serious.

Atlus specifically highlights a “never-before-seen story arc,” extra cutscenes and alternate endings in Royal. Those additions matter when choosing between releases because Royal is the expanded version of Persona 5, not merely a cosmetic upgrade. A buyer who wants the most complete version of the Phantom Thieves story should start with Royal rather than an earlier edition.

Who will respond to its tone

  • Players who like a strong visual identity and an energetic, rebellious mood.
  • Newcomers who want a clear ensemble cast built around a shared mission.
  • Readers who value a large amount of story material and additional narrative branches.
  • Anyone whose preferred platform is Nintendo Switch, provided the game is currently available in their region.

What Persona 3 Reload is offering

A supernatural coming-of-age drama

Persona 3 Reload follows a transfer student who arrives at a new school and discovers the Dark Hour, a hidden period between one day and the next. After awakening Persona power, the protagonist investigates this phenomenon and battles alongside friends. The official premise places fate, friendship and the mark people leave on one another at the center of the experience.

Reload is a modern reimagining rather than a simple re-release. Atlus emphasizes new presentation technology, quality-of-life improvements, new scenes and interactions, and additional voiceover. Those changes are designed to make a classic structure more accessible without changing the identity of its story.

Who will respond to its tone

  • Players who prefer a darker, more melancholy narrative.
  • Anyone interested in stories about mortality, memory, friendship and accepting difficult truths.
  • Returning Persona fans who want to see an older entry rebuilt with current presentation and convenience features.
  • Players already committed to PlayStation, Xbox or PC/Steam, subject to current regional listings.

Immediate Nintendo Switch option Persona 5 Royal The cited Atlus listing includes Nintendo Switch; the cited Reload listing does not list Switch.

Story and atmosphere: heist fantasy or painful truth?

Choose Royal for momentum and rebellion

Royal’s appeal comes from the contrast between everyday social life and the Phantom Thieves’ secret operations. The heist framing gives the story a forward-driving objective: identify corruption, enter a target’s distorted world and attempt to change the situation. If you want a cast whose identity is tied to an overt collective cause, Royal is the more natural match.

The added Royal material also makes the purchase decision straightforward. You are not choosing between a bare original and an expansion released separately; the Royal edition is the version Atlus markets with its additional arc, scenes and endings included in its story pitch.

Choose Reload for introspection

Reload’s conflict is less about public rebellion and more about living under a supernatural deadline. The Dark Hour premise creates an atmosphere of uncertainty, while the characters’ friendships and memories carry emotional weight. If you prefer a story that asks how people respond to fate and painful knowledge, Reload offers the more somber starting point.

Its remake status is equally important. Reload is intended to make a genre-defining RPG feel contemporary through presentation and quality-of-life work. That makes it attractive to players who are curious about Persona 3 but do not want to begin with an older version’s interface or production values.

Which game should a newcomer play first?

  1. Start with Persona 5 Royal if you have no specific preference and want the safest general recommendation.
  2. Start with Persona 3 Reload if the Dark Hour, a darker emotional register and a modern remake of a classic are the reasons you are interested.
  3. Check your platform before buying. Royal’s cited platform list includes PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch and Steam. Reload’s cited list includes PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Xbox Game Pass and PC/Steam options.
  4. Decide whether you want post-story content now. Reload’s Episode Aigis expansion is a separate value consideration, not a reason to assume the base game is incomplete for every player.

There is no required story order. The games use different casts and premises, so choosing one first does not prevent you from understanding the other later. Your first game will mainly establish which tone and structure you prefer.

If you already played Persona 5

Persona 3 Reload is still a worthwhile choice when you want a distinctly different emotional experience rather than another version of the same premise. Its Dark Hour investigation, focus on fate and emphasis on painful truths give it a more solemn identity than the Phantom Thieves’ heist narrative.

Do not buy Reload solely because it is newer. Buy it because you want its story and because the modernization matters to you. The remake adds new scenes, interactions, voiceover and quality-of-life features, but the central appeal remains the Persona 3 setting and its coming-of-age themes.

Conversely, if you played Persona 5 Royal and mainly want another stylish ensemble adventure with a lighter, rebellious surface, Reload may feel more restrained. That contrast is a feature, not a defect; it is the reason the two games complement each other.

If you already played Persona 3

Royal gives you a different entry point into the series’ social and supernatural role-playing formula. The Phantom Thieves’ identity, their mind-heist objective and Royal’s additional story arc provide new stakes rather than a retelling of the Dark Hour.

Players who remember Persona 3 primarily for its atmosphere may prefer to revisit it through Reload’s modern presentation before moving on. Players who want a sharper tonal change should go directly to Royal.

What the platform difference means

Royal has the broader cited platform spread because Nintendo Switch appears in Atlus’ listing alongside console and PC options. Reload’s cited listing focuses on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, with Xbox Game Pass also identified. Availability can vary by storefront, so the table is a guide to the published platform lists rather than a guarantee that every edition is sold everywhere.

Persona 3 Reload’s Expansion Pass

Episode Aigis –The Answer– is the major post-game consideration. Atlus describes it as “the final chapter of Persona 3 Reload” and says it contains over 30 hours of all new gameplay, along with new costumes and background music sets.

That makes the Expansion Pass meaningful for players who want a continuation after the main story and additional presentation extras. It does not automatically make Reload the better first purchase: Royal’s expanded base edition and Reload’s optional continuation answer different needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Buy the base game only if you want to experience Reload’s main campaign first and decide later whether more story is worthwhile.
  • Consider the pass if a post-story chapter and more than 30 hours of additional gameplay are central to your buying decision.
  • Check bundle contents in your country, because editions and store listings can change.

The cited official material does not establish a stable price comparison between Royal, Reload and the Expansion Pass. Compare the current base-game and pass prices separately rather than assuming a bundle is always the best value.

How to choose by your priorities

You want the most welcoming first purchase

Choose Royal. Its premise is immediately legible: a group of masked friends conducts heists inside corrupt adults’ minds. The Royal edition also foregrounds its expanded story material, so a newcomer does not need to assemble multiple releases to reach the intended version.

You want the heaviest emotional atmosphere

Choose Reload. The Dark Hour, fate and painful truths are not incidental flavor; they define the game’s official framing. Expect a more contemplative mood than the Phantom Thieves’ rebellion.

You want a remake built around modernization

Choose Reload. Its selling point is specifically the rebuilding of a genre-defining RPG for the modern era, including updated graphics, quality-of-life features, new interactions and added voiceover.

You need Nintendo Switch

Royal is the option supported by the cited Atlus platform listing. Verify the live Nintendo eShop listing in your country before purchase, because regional catalogs can change.

Persona 3 Reload: Standard Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
  • Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
  • Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
  • Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.

You want a post-story campaign

Choose Reload and budget for the Expansion Pass if Episode Aigis is important to you. The official description promises over 30 hours of new gameplay, but that figure applies to the expansion, not to a stated average completion time for the base game.

Common buying mistakes

Using an assumed runtime as the deciding factor

No authoritative average completion time for either base game is established in the cited official material. Individual play styles, optional activities and difficulty choices can affect a personal playthrough. A precise runtime winner would therefore overstate what is known.

Comparing launch prices as if they were permanent

Royal released on March 31, 2020 and Reload on February 2, 2024, but release dates do not predict current prices. Retail discounts, platform sales and regional currencies change. Check the price at the store where you intend to play.

Assuming the Expansion Pass is part of every Reload edition

Episode Aigis is identified as an Expansion Pass. Read the current product description to see whether you are viewing the base game, a pass or a bundle.

Choosing only by graphics

Reload’s modern presentation is a legitimate reason to choose it, but its defining difference is narrative tone. If you want the Phantom Thieves’ heist structure, newer presentation alone will not make Reload a substitute for Royal.

Buying the wrong platform version

Confirm the exact console family, PC storefront and regional availability before checkout. A platform listed by Atlus may still have different physical stock or digital purchasing rules in a particular country.

A practical decision checklist

  • Do I want a rebellious heist story or a darker Dark Hour drama?
  • Is a modern remake of a classic more important to me than an expanded edition of a newer game?
  • Do I need Nintendo Switch support?
  • Am I buying only a base game, or do I specifically want Reload’s Episode Aigis continuation?
  • Have I checked the current regional listing, edition contents and price?
  • Am I choosing from the game’s documented premise rather than an unverified runtime claim?

If your answers are evenly split, begin with Persona 5 Royal. It is the more broadly appealing default and includes the expanded Royal story material. Move to Persona 3 Reload afterward when you want a more melancholy, fate-focused experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final verdict

Persona 5 Royal is the recommendation for most newcomers: it combines the Phantom Thieves’ accessible heist premise with a new Royal story arc, extra cutscenes and alternate endings. Persona 3 Reload is the more purposeful choice for players drawn to the Dark Hour, friendship, fate and a modernized version of a classic RPG. Its Expansion Pass adds Episode Aigis –The Answer–, described by Atlus as the final chapter with over 30 hours of new gameplay.

Neither game invalidates the other. Buy Royal for the broadest first step into modern Persona; buy Reload when its darker story and remake-focused presentation are the features you actually want.
