The world is not presented as one continuous open-world map. Creator Soulframe Liang describes multiple handcrafted, reasonably sized maps. These areas can open up as you obtain abilities and Phantom Edges that let you reach previously inaccessible routes, so exploration and backtracking matter without requiring a seamless map.
Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike?
It has Soulslike influences, but calling it only a Soulslike gives the wrong impression. Sha-Chi Essence and Power Surge
Do not confuse Sha-Chi with Sha-Chi Essence. Sha-Chi governs defensive stamina and can be restored by switching main weapons. Attacks generate Sha-Chi Essence instead. When the Essence gauge is full, Soul can trigger a Power Surge that interrupts an opponent and deals major damage.
This gives combat two separate resource questions: how long you can keep defending before Sha-Chi is depleted, and when to cash in offensive momentum for a Power Surge. A player who only blocks may survive briefly but lose access to the meter needed to avoid a stagger; a player who attacks recklessly may miss the timing needed to turn a full Essence gauge into an interruption.

S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang said the game has more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges in an August 2026 PlayStation statement. The PlayStation game page uses the less specific wording “30+ primary weapons and 20+ unique Phantom Edges,” so the precise 25-Edge figure should be attributed to Liang’s statement rather than treated as an immutable total after launch updates.
