A systems-led strategy RPG with gridless movement, object-based tactics, and a meaningful platform choice—plus caveats on story familiarity and Switch performance.

Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero is a single-player strategy RPG whose best reason to play is its unusually flexible combat: movement is not locked to a grid, and you can turn battlefield objects and unit placement into tactical tools. It is a strong fit if you enjoy experimenting with systems; reviewers also flag familiar story beats and, in one Switch review, performance problems later in the game. For buyers, Switch offers portability, while that performance report makes another platform worth considering if one is available to you.

How does Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero play?

Marona is a young girl who can communicate with Phantoms in the ocean world of Ivoire. She and Apricot set out to assemble a crew and oppose the Shipwreck Fleet. The premise leads into a strategy RPG built around recruiting Phantoms and bringing them into battle through objects rather than simply deploying a conventional squad. NIS America describes the story and core setup on its official product page.

Combat is turn-based, but not grid-based. Each character can move freely within a radius, and turns are determined by Speed; the game lets you inspect the turn order and plan around it. This makes positioning feel more physical and fluid than in many tactics games, while still requiring you to account for who will act next. The publisher explains the system on its official system page.

Confine and Confriend

Marona recruits Phantoms, then uses Confine to bind them to objects on the battlefield, including trees and rocks, so they can join the fight. Confriend is a special version of this ability: a Phantom possesses Marona, and her appearance changes according to the ally. These are the central ideas behind the game’s battlefield setup and its distinctive character combinations.

#1 Best Overall
Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero - Nintendo Switch
  • Play It Your Way: Create a team of allies from over 50 unit types and send them into battle! How the fight unfolds is limited only by your imagination.
  • Phantom Possession: Take on tactical turn-based RPG battles using the Confine system, which allows Phantoms you've befriended to combine with and possess items to battle alongside you!
  • Light-hearted Adventure: Marona may be on a quest to save her dear friend Ash, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be fun and new friendships to be found along the way!
  • Deluxe Edition includes: Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero GAME, Digital Soundtrack (download code), Soft Cover Art Book

Objects and positioning are part of the tactics

The map is more than a backdrop. NIS America describes equipping objects found on the field, throwing enemies off the map, and stacking characters to reach high places. Lifting an ally can expose that ally’s skills or let you use the ally as a weapon. Those options create room for improvisation, but the official descriptions do not establish that every tactic is equally effective or useful in every fight.

Is Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero worth playing?

It is most appealing if you value tactical experimentation over a conventional grid-and-attack routine. The combination of free movement, Speed-based turn order, Phantom possession, and object interactions gives the combat a clear identity. Reviewers generally respond well to that systems-led design: RPGFan’s January 23, 2025 review scored it 86/100 and highlighted the gameplay’s distinct charm, while RPG Site’s Nathan Lee gave the Nintendo Switch version 7/10 on March 2, 2025, calling it enjoyable and deep for strategy RPG fans.

The caveats are worth weighing before buying. RPG Site criticized weak enemy pathfinding and limited difficulty, while RPGamer’s February 10, 2025 review found refreshed mechanics paired with story beats that felt familiar. These are individual outlet assessments, not a single consensus verdict. If you mainly want a surprising narrative or consistently demanding battles, those reviews suggest tempering expectations; if you want a tactics game with room to test unusual approaches, the combat is the stronger draw.

Does Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero run well on Switch?

RPG Site’s Nathan Lee reported noticeable slowdown on Switch several chapters into the game, when maps had more enemies, and said Graphics mode struggled even in early levels. The review recommended choosing another platform when possible. That is one reviewer’s observation from a March 2, 2025 review, not a current comparative hardware test or a guarantee that every player will encounter the same result.

If portability is your priority, Switch remains an option, but consider that reported performance concern. If it is not, compare the available PlayStation and PC editions before choosing. No numeric frame-rate comparison is established here, so there is no sound basis for claiming a specific performance gap between platforms.

Which version should you buy?

Version What is established Buyer consideration
Nintendo Switch Console release: January 30, 2025 in North America and Europe; February 7, 2025 in Australia and New Zealand. NIS America lists English and French text and English and Japanese audio for the product. Choose it for portability, while factoring in RPG Site’s Switch-specific slowdown report. Verify language availability for the exact regional edition.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 Console release: January 30, 2025 in North America and Europe; February 7, 2025 in Australia and New Zealand. An alternative if you do not need handheld play. No sourced performance benchmark establishes how it compares with Switch.
PC / Steam Steam release: April 24, 2025. Steam lists English and Japanese interface, full audio, and subtitles, plus French interface and subtitles. Check the live Steam listing for current edition and language details before purchase.

Dates and product details are from NIS America, its system and release information, and the Steam listing. NIS America identifies the game as single-player. Its product page gives the ESRB rating as T for Teen for fantasy violence, mild suggestive themes, and language, and flags in-game purchases.

Base game, DLC, and physical editions

Nintendo’s US store lists a separate Bonus Story: Parallel Siblings DLC item. Its indexed listing showed $13.99, but that is a captured price rather than a promise of the current cost or a complete list of DLC across regions and platforms; check the live Nintendo listing for current details. Physical editions are listed by NIS America’s store, which identifies Amazon as a retailer for the Deluxe Edition. Regional availability, stock, and edition contents can change, so confirm those details with the seller.

Do you need to play the first Phantom Brave first?

The available product information and reviews establish the premise and systems of The Lost Hero, but do not settle how much prior knowledge of the first Phantom Brave helps with its story. If continuity is important to your decision, the sources cited here do not support a definitive recommendation either way.
