What kind of game is Phasmophobia?
Kinetic Games lists Phasmophobia as a single-player and online co-op game, with VR support. You investigate paranormal activity and try to identify the ghost; the appeal is built around frightening encounters and variation between investigations, rather than a fixed sequence of scares. You do not need a VR headset to play.
The official Steam listing showed an update notice dated October 7, 2026, preparing for the Crimson Eye event scheduled for October 8. Co-op is the clearest fit for a prospective buyer. A PlayStation 5 review indexed by Metacritic on January 13, 2025 described the game as surprisingly scary both solo and with friends, and emphasized that investigations can vary even when players revisit the same map and ghost type. Is Phasmophobia good solo?
Solo is officially supported, and the January 2025 PS5 review excerpt found it frightening. But the same Metacritic page cautioned that the game is a tougher sell as a single-player experience. If you expect solo to deliver the same social tension and group dynamic as online co-op, treat that as a reason to be cautious rather than assuming the modes are interchangeable. How scary and replayable is it?
The cited PS5 review describes the game as scary and points to variation between investigations on the same map with the same ghost type. An October 16, 2020 PC review indexed by Metacritic praised its imaginative, then-new approach to horror. PC Gamer reported in 2026 that Kinetic Games apologized after complaints about the Player Character update, said it was addressing issues, and promised greater development visibility. It is a strong candidate if you want a horror game to play online with friends and value unsettling encounters that can play out differently from one investigation to another. Consider it more carefully if you expect a polished solo-first experience or are particularly sensitive to lobby usability. VR is an optional supported route, but the available evidence does not identify a preferred headset or establish that VR is better for everyone.
