Phil Spencer’s 2024 comments showed he wanted Xbox to work better on handheld PCs; they did not confirm that Microsoft was building its own handheld console. Xbox later announced ASUS-developed ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handheld PCs, which it said became available on October 16, 2025. Those products are Xbox-branded and made with ASUS, not evidence of a Spencer-confirmed Microsoft-designed console.
Did Phil Spencer confirm an Xbox handheld?
No. In June 2024, Spencer said, “I think we should have a handheld, too,” during an interview at IGN Live. Ars Technica reported that the remark expressed his view but was not an official announcement that Microsoft was actively developing portable gaming hardware. Ars Technica’s June 2024 report

Earlier, in a March 2024 Polygon interview reported by PCWorld, Spencer discussed handheld PCs such as the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. “The things that usually frustrate me are more Windows-based than device-based,” he said, pointing to the software experience rather than announcing an Xbox-built device. What did Spencer want from handheld gaming?
Spencer’s remarks were about making portable PC gaming feel more like Xbox and making local play matter. In the June 2024 interview, he praised his ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and Steam Deck, and said, “I think being able to play games locally is really important.” These are handheld PCs that run games on the device, rather than relying solely on streaming. That interest had appeared before.
