Microsoft announced a major Xbox leadership change on February 20, 2026: Phil Spencer said he was stepping back and would advise through the summer, while Sarah Bond decided to leave Microsoft. Asha Sharma was appointed to lead Microsoft Gaming; after a company naming update in April, her title became CEO XBOX. Subsequent announcements in July and September described a much broader restructuring, with some studio changes completed and other proposals still under consultation.
What happened to Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond?
In a February 20, 2026 announcement, Microsoft said Spencer would step back from his leadership role and serve in an advisory capacity through the summer. Spencer said he had discussed stepping back with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella the previous fall. Nadella described Spencer as retiring from the company; Spencer characterized it as stepping back and starting a new chapter. Those are Microsoft’s stated accounts of the transition.
Spencer’s message also said Bond had decided to leave Microsoft “to begin a new chapter.” It did not give a more specific reason for her departure. The same announcement credited Bond with work on Xbox platform strategy, Game Pass, cloud gaming, hardware launches, and major company moments, but did not name her as Spencer’s successor.
| Leader | What Microsoft announced | Next step stated at the time |
|---|---|---|
| Phil Spencer | Spencer was stepping back; Nadella said he had decided to retire from Microsoft. | Spencer said he would remain in an advisory role through the summer to support the handoff. |
| Sarah Bond | Spencer said Bond had decided to leave Microsoft “to begin a new chapter.” | The announcement did not specify a reason or describe a new role. |
Microsoft’s February 20 announcement said Spencer had spent more than 38 years at Microsoft, including 12 years leading Gaming. Nadella also reported that Microsoft’s gaming business reached over 500 million monthly active users; that is a company-reported figure in the announcement.

Who is the new Xbox CEO?
Asha Sharma was appointed Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reporting to Nadella. Microsoft’s announcement included an April 23, 2026 editor’s note: Microsoft Gaming became known as XBOX, and Sharma’s title became CEO XBOX. The current XBOX leadership page, checked October 4, 2026, lists Sharma as CEO, Matt Booty as Chief Content Officer, and Helen Chiang as Chief Operating Officer.
Booty was named Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer in February, reporting to Sharma. The appointment of Sharma—not Bond—was the announced succession to Spencer’s role.

How did the leadership transition expand into a restructuring?
July: planned role reductions and studio changes
On July 6, 2026, Sharma announced what she called “the most significant restructure in XBOX history.” She said Xbox planned to reduce approximately 3,200 roles throughout FY27, including approximately 1,600 role eliminations announced that day. These are management’s figures and plans, not independently audited totals in the announcement. Sharma cited organizational complexity and weaker-than-expected growth in several bets as part of the stated business rationale.
Her Resetting XBOX message also outlined studio changes:

What the shakeup means—and what remains unknown
The February announcement changed the top leadership team: Spencer stepped back, Bond left, Sharma took charge, and Booty assumed the Chief Content Officer role. The July and September announcements then set out a separate, wider reorganization involving jobs, studio ownership, and studio structures.
