Phil Spencer said Xbox should pursue “better games that more people can play” during an August 21, 2024 interview at Gamescom, as he was asked about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle coming to PlayStation 5. He framed the shift toward releasing games on more platforms as part of a changing industry—not as proof that wider availability had already improved games or increased their audiences.
What did Phil Spencer say?
In an interview during Xbox’s Gamescom livestream, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said that established ways of building and distributing games were changing. He argued that the industry should keep its focus on what those changes ought to deliver: “But the end result has to be better games that more people can play. If we’re not focused on that, I think we’re focused on the wrong things.” GameSpot reported the quote on August 21, 2024; Thurrott reproduced the broader passage that day.
Why was he talking about games on PlayStation?
The immediate context was Microsoft’s announcement that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would come to PS5 after its Xbox and PC debut. Spencer was responding to questions about Xbox games appearing on a rival platform. His answer connected that release discussion to a wider argument: as industry pressures and efforts to find growth reshape distribution, the result should benefit players.
How does that goal fit Microsoft’s expectations for Xbox?
Spencer paired his point about changing distribution with an acknowledgement of the business constraint. He said Microsoft had high expectations for what Xbox should deliver and supported the division. That makes the remark both a player-facing aspiration and an executive rationale for decisions made within Microsoft’s commercial expectations; it was not a claim that those interests always align or that a particular release strategy guarantees success.

Does this establish a permanent Xbox exclusivity policy?
No. The interview addressed the Indiana Jones PS5 announcement and the broader possibility of change in how games are distributed. The reports do not present the remark as a detailed, permanent rule for deciding which future Xbox games will remain exclusive. It should be read as Spencer’s stated goal in that moment, not as a complete platform-release policy.

The coverage records Spencer’s position, not measured results. It does not establish that releasing games on additional platforms has made them better, quantify any audience expansion, or compare the commercial return with the value Xbox exclusives may provide to Xbox users. “Better games that more people can play” is the outcome Spencer said should guide change, rather than evidence that the outcome had already been achieved.
