If Apache reports that php8apache2_4.dll is missing, cannot be found, or could not be loaded, the usual cause is a mismatched PHP package, an incorrect path in httpd.conf, incompatible 32-bit/64-bit components, a missing Visual C++ runtime, or an Apache-version mismatch. The file is PHP 8’s Apache module for the apache2handler SAPI. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, download the correct official PHP build, use the Thread Safe (TS) package, match the architecture and runtime, correct the Apache directives, test the configuration, and only then restart Apache.
This guide explains what the DLL does, how to determine which setup you have, and how to repair the installation without copying an untrusted standalone DLL.

What is php8apache2_4.dll?
php8apache2_4.dll is the PHP 8 module that Apache 2.x loads when PHP is integrated through the apache2handler SAPI. It is not a general-purpose Windows library that can be exchanged between PHP installations. The module is compiled for a particular PHP build, Apache integration, processor architecture and Visual C++ runtime.
Apache loads the module through the LoadModule directive. A typical PHP manual configuration is:

LoadModule php_module "C:/php/php8apache2_4.dll"
<FilesMatch .php$>
SetHandler application/x-httpd-php
</FilesMatch>
PHPIniDir "C:/php"
The path in that example is only illustrative. Replace it with the directory that actually contains your PHP installation. PHP’s Windows guidance also recommends forward slashes in Apache paths.
Why does Apache say the DLL is missing or cannot be loaded?
A “missing” message does not always mean that the filename is absent. Apache can report a load failure when the file exists but one of its required components is incompatible or unavailable.
- The file is not in the directory named by
LoadModule. A moved PHP folder, a spelling error, or a different drive letter is enough to cause this. - The downloaded PHP archive is the wrong type. Apache’s
apache2handlerrequires the Thread Safe build. A Non-Thread Safe (NTS) package is intended for FastCGI, IIS or command-line use rather than direct Apache module loading. - Architecture does not match. A 32-bit (x86) PHP build must be paired with compatible 32-bit Apache and runtime components; a 64-bit (x64) build needs matching 64-bit components.
- The Visual C++ runtime is missing or mismatched. PHP requires the Microsoft Visual C runtime. Installing the current supported package for the same architecture is part of the repair.
- Apache major versions differ. Apache warns that modules built for one major Apache version generally do not work with another because of API changes.
- The package is incomplete or was obtained from an unreliable source. A random DLL-download site may provide a file from a different PHP build, with unknown provenance and incompatible dependencies.
Is php8apache2_4.dll safe to use?
The filename is legitimate when it comes from the official PHP Windows package that matches your Apache setup. The safe approach is to obtain the complete PHP distribution from PHP’s official Windows downloads, not to replace one file with a similarly named DLL from a third-party archive. A standalone file can be built for a different PHP release, architecture or Apache API and may leave the installation unstable even if Apache starts.
Do not treat a newer NTS package as a universal replacement for a missing TS module. The correct choice depends on the SAPI you intend to use, not simply on the package’s version number.
How do I identify my Apache and PHP installation?
Before changing files, record the versions and architectures. This prevents a series of guesses that can introduce a second mismatch.
Check the PHP directory
- Open the folder where PHP is installed, such as
C:phpor another directory you selected. - Look specifically for
php8apache2_4.dll. Use File Explorer’s search box or PowerShell:
Get-ChildItem -Path C:php -Filter php8apache2_4.dll -Recurse
Replace C:php with the real PHP directory. If the command returns nothing, the configured path cannot work because the module is absent from that installation.

Check PHP’s version and architecture
From a Command Prompt, run:
php -v
The output identifies the PHP version and commonly indicates whether the build is thread safe and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. If php is not on your PATH, run php.exe from its installation directory instead.
Check Apache’s version and architecture
From Apache’s bin directory, run:
httpd.exe -v
Record the Apache version shown. Also determine whether the Apache distribution is x86 or x64 from its package information. The PHP and Apache major-version and architecture choices must be compatible; a module built for another Apache major version is not made compatible by changing its filename.
Which PHP package should I download for Apache?
For direct Apache module integration, choose the Windows Thread Safe (TS) PHP package. PHP states that TS is required when using the apache2handler SAPI. NTS builds are for FastCGI, IIS and other scenarios where PHP runs outside Apache’s module process.
| Setup | PHP build | How PHP runs | Needs php8apache2_4.dll? |
|---|---|---|---|
Apache module (apache2handler) |
Thread Safe (TS) | PHP is loaded as an Apache module | Yes |
| FastCGI or IIS | Non-Thread Safe (NTS) | PHP runs as a separate FastCGI process | No |
| Command line | TS or NTS, according to the chosen distribution and use | php.exe handles scripts directly |
No |
Download a complete package that matches the PHP version you intend to run. If your existing archive does not contain the Apache module, replacing only the missing filename is not a reliable repair; install the fitting TS distribution instead.
How do I match x86, x64 and the Visual C++ runtime?
Architecture must be consistent across the application and its runtime. Microsoft states that the redistributable package architecture must match the application’s target architecture. In practical terms, do not combine x86 PHP with x64-only components or x64 PHP with an x86-only runtime.
Use one architecture throughout
- For an x86 Apache installation, use x86 PHP and the x86 Visual C++ Redistributable.
- For an x64 Apache installation, use x64 PHP and the x64 Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Do not infer architecture from Windows itself. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit applications, so the installed Apache and PHP builds still need to be checked individually.
Install the Microsoft runtime
PHP requires the Visual C runtime. Install Microsoft’s current supported Visual C++ Redistributable for the architecture that matches PHP and Apache, then close and reopen any command prompt used for testing. Microsoft recommends the latest supported v14 package for applications built with supported Visual Studio toolchains. The runtime is a prerequisite for loading the module; it is not a substitute for the correct TS build.

How do I fix the Apache configuration?
After obtaining a matching TS package and confirming its location, edit Apache’s httpd.conf.
- Open the configuration file used by the Apache instance you are starting. If multiple Apache copies are installed, verify that you are editing the one associated with the service or shortcut you actually use.
- Add or correct the PHP module line, replacing
C:/phpwith the real path:
LoadModule php_module "C:/php/php8apache2_4.dll"
- Add the PHP file handler:
<FilesMatch .php$>
SetHandler application/x-httpd-php
</FilesMatch>
- Set the PHP configuration directory:
PHPIniDir "C:/php"
- Save the file. Use forward slashes in these Apache paths, and ensure the quoted directory is the same one you inspected for the DLL and
php.ini.
Do not add a second LoadModule line for another PHP installation. Duplicate or stale directives can make it unclear which module Apache is attempting to load.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I test the configuration before restarting Apache?
Test from Apache’s bin directory before restarting the service. Apache documents -t as a configuration syntax test.
httpd.exe -t
A successful result means the configuration syntax passed. If Apache prints an error, do not restart yet. Correct the reported path, directive or dependency and run the test again.
Then inspect the modules Apache knows about:
httpd.exe -M
This lists loaded static and shared modules. Use it to check whether the PHP module is being recognized by the Apache instance you tested. If the module still cannot be loaded, return to the path, TS/NTS, architecture, Visual C++ runtime and Apache-major-version checks rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
How do I verify that PHP works after Apache starts?
- Restart Apache only after
httpd.exe -tsucceeds. - Create a small PHP test page in the document root containing:
<?php
phpinfo();
?>
- Request that page through the local Apache site and confirm that it reports the PHP version you intended to install.
- Remove or restrict the diagnostic page after testing, because a
phpinfo()page exposes detailed configuration information. - Optionally run
php -vfrom the PHP directory to compare the command-line version with the version Apache is serving. If they differ, Apache may be loading a different PHP directory than the one used by your shell.
If Apache still displays “module could not be loaded,” treat that message as a compatibility or location problem. Recheck the exact file path, the package’s TS status, x86/x64 alignment, the Visual C++ runtime and the Apache major version.

What is the difference between Apache module mode and FastCGI?
Both approaches can serve PHP, but they use different PHP builds and process models. The choice determines whether php8apache2_4.dll is needed.
| Comparison point | Apache module mode | FastCGI |
|---|---|---|
| PHP package | Thread Safe (TS) | Non-Thread Safe (NTS) is the documented Windows choice |
| Integration | Apache loads PHP through LoadModule |
Apache communicates with a separate PHP process |
| Required file | php8apache2_4.dll |
No Apache PHP module DLL |
| Compatibility checks | PHP build, Apache major version, architecture and runtime must align | PHP/FastCGI configuration, architecture and runtime must align |
If your deliberate plan is FastCGI, installing an NTS package and configuring the FastCGI handler is appropriate; it will not, however, repair an Apache configuration that explicitly references php8apache2_4.dll. If you want the PHP manual’s Apache-module example, use TS.
Do Windows 10 and Windows 11 support this setup?
PHP’s current manual states that PHP 8.3 and later require Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 or newer. Windows 10 and Windows 11 therefore meet that documented operating-system minimum. That minimum does not remove the need to match PHP and Apache architectures, use a compatible Apache major version, install the Visual C++ runtime and select the correct SAPI build.
What should I avoid when repairing the error?
- Do not download a random DLL. A file with the right name can still belong to another PHP release, architecture, Apache API or runtime.
- Do not switch TS to NTS solely because it is newer. NTS is a deliberate FastCGI/IIS choice, not a drop-in Apache-module replacement.
- Do not skip the syntax test. Restarting repeatedly can obscure which configuration change caused the failure.
- Do not assume the first Apache installation is the active one. Test from the
bindirectory belonging to the instance you start, and edit that instance’shttpd.conf. - Do not mix architectures. A 64-bit Windows installation does not make every x86 and x64 component interchangeable.
What if the file exists but Apache still refuses to load it?
Work through the checks in this order:
- Copy the complete path shown in your PHP folder and compare it character-for-character with the quoted path in
LoadModule. - Confirm the package is Thread Safe if Apache is using
apache2handler. - Confirm PHP and Apache are both x86 or both x64, then install the corresponding Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Compare Apache’s major version with the module’s intended Apache integration.
- Run
httpd.exe -tagain from the correct Apachebindirectory, followed byhttpd.exe -M. - If the module is absent from the official package or the archive is incomplete, replace the installation with a complete, matching PHP Windows package rather than copying a single DLL.
These checks address the documented compatibility requirements. There is no universal error-to-cause mapping for every wording Apache may print, so the exact message should be read alongside the path and build information you recorded.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep several PHP versions on one Windows computer?
Yes, but each Apache instance must point to the intended PHP directory, and command-line PATH settings can select a different version than Apache serves. Use an absolute LoadModule path and verify the served version with a temporary phpinfo() page.
Does changing the DLL filename make an incompatible build work?
No. The filename does not change the compiled interfaces or dependencies inside the module. Renaming another PHP DLL can hide the original mistake while leaving Apache unable to load it.

Why does a command-line PHP test pass while Apache still fails?
The CLI executable and the Apache module can come from different folders or package types. A working php -v command therefore does not prove that Apache can load the TS module named in httpd.conf.
