PICO PARK vs. Overcooked and Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch Player Counts, Modes, and Difficulty

Short answer: Choose PICO PARK when five to eight people want a single-screen coordination puzzle in which everyone must solve the room and reach the goal. Choose Overcooked! All You Can Eat for two to four players who enjoy frantic, timed kitchen work. Choose Super Mario Bros. Wonder for a family-friendly platforming adventure with up to four people playing locally on one Switch.

PICO PARK 2 is the broadest option for a large group: it supports two to eight local or online players, has 60 World levels, cross-play, and a Dark mode explicitly described as difficult. “Hardest” depends on the pressure you prefer: PICO PARK tests shared timing, Overcooked tests speed and multitasking, and Wonder generally gives mixed-skill groups a more forgiving route through platforming.

At a glance: which Switch co-op game fits your group?

Game Local players Online players Main structure and modes What makes it difficult Best fit
PICO PARK 2–8 2–8 48 cooperative levels, Battle Mode, Endless Mode Shared spatial timing; everyone must complete the level Five to eight people sharing one screen and communicating constantly
PICO PARK 2 2–8 2–8 60 World levels, seven Endless variations, Battle, Dark, cross-play Team coordination scaled to group size; Dark is intentionally difficult Large groups that want more content and a harder optional mode
Overcooked! All You Can Eat 1–4 2–4 Campaign, Survival, Practice, Assist Clocks, task switching, collisions and order management Two to four players who like hectic, timed teamwork
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Up to 4 on one Switch Co-Op Rooms for up to 12 friends; up to 4 on a course World-map platforming, varied courses and Wonder Flowers Platforming precision, with more forgiving character options for some players Families and mixed-skill groups wanting a longer adventure

The online figure for Wonder needs careful reading: a Co-Op Room can include up to 12 friends, but only four players are active on a course at once. It is not a 12-player local or simultaneous course.

What PICO PARK asks the group to do

PICO PARK: one solution, one team finish

The Nintendo eShop describes PICO PARK as a “Cooperative action puzzle game for 2-8 players!” Its 48 levels revolve around one rule: collect every key, open the goal door and get all players to the finish. A player who reaches the door early does not complete the level alone; the whole team has to arrive.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That rule changes the social dynamic. A person who normally carries a platform game cannot simply run ahead, and a player who falls behind can hold up everyone. The group must decide who stands on switches, who carries or uses a key, when to move a platform and when to wait. Most failures are coordination failures rather than a lack of reflexes by one individual.

The original game also includes Battle Mode, which lets the same group compete after cooperative play, and Endless Mode for chasing a score. Those modes add replay value, but the defining experience is still the sequence of compact cooperative puzzles.

PICO PARK 2: a larger, more flexible follow-up

PICO PARK 2 keeps the two-to-eight-player concept while expanding the structure. Nintendo lists both local and online play for two to eight players, and the product description names World, Endless, Battle and Dark modes. The game has 60 World levels, compared with 48 in the original.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TECOPARK says the difficulty of each level is tuned to the number of players, so a small team and a full eight-player room are not expected to solve every situation in exactly the same way. It also describes seven Endless variations and cross-play for up to eight players. That makes the sequel the stronger choice when some friends are on another system or when the group wants more than a single campaign-like run.

Dark mode is described by Nintendo as “slightly unfair, somewhat difficult.” Treat that wording as a warning about design intent, not as a standardized rating: it is the explicitly punishing option in the PICO PARK 2 lineup.

How Overcooked! All You Can Eat differs

Smaller teams and a constant clock

Overcooked! All You Can Eat supports one to four local players and two to four online players. Its campaign, Survival, Practice and Assist modes make it a more structured fit for a small group than PICO PARK’s eight-player rooms.

Instead of solving a fixed spatial mechanism, players prepare dishes under time pressure. The work is divided into jobs such as gathering ingredients, chopping, cooking, plating and washing dishes, while the kitchen layout and hazards disrupt the plan. Everyone is making decisions at once, and a mistake can affect the order queue as well as the team’s timing.

That produces a different kind of communication. PICO PARK players usually call out positions and timing—“wait,” “jump,” “stand on the switch.” Overcooked players call out ownership and priority—“I am chopping,” “rice is burning,” “wash plates,” “serve this order.” The game feels hectic because the clock keeps running while the team reorganizes.

Assist mode changes the pressure

All You Can Eat includes an Assist mode in addition to campaign, Survival and Practice. Because the assist option is designed to reduce the normal pressure, it gives families or new players a way to learn the kitchen routines before attempting the fastest stages. It does not turn the game into a puzzle with no consequences; it changes how demanding the time-management loop feels.

For a group of five or more, the four-player limit is decisive. You would need to rotate players, form separate sessions or choose one of the PICO PARK games instead. For two to four people who specifically enjoy shouting priorities while a timer runs, Overcooked is the more natural choice.

How Super Mario Bros. Wonder differs

Four active players on one Switch

Nintendo’s official Wonder information says you can team up with up to three friends locally on one Switch, making four local players total. Online Co-Op Rooms can include up to 12 friends, but a course still has a maximum of four active players. The larger room is for meeting and coordinating online, not for putting 12 characters on the same level simultaneously.

Wonder is a platforming adventure rather than a room-by-room coordination puzzle. Players move through a world map, enter courses, collect power-ups and encounter Wonder Flowers that change the behavior or appearance of a level. The group is progressing through a longer campaign, while PICO PARK is built around short levels whose central problem is getting everyone to cooperate.

Why Wonder often feels more forgiving

Wonder supports different character abilities and optional assist-oriented choices described in Nintendo support materials. Those options can make it easier for a less experienced platform player to stay involved, whereas PICO PARK’s completion rule applies equally to every participant: the level is not finished until everyone reaches the goal.

Wonder can still become demanding when a course asks for precise jumps or when players choose more challenging objectives. The distinction is that one player’s mistake does not define every course in the same way as a missed timing sequence in PICO PARK. A family can often adjust character choice or replay a course without making the entire group solve one exact cooperation gimmick.

How many people can play on one Nintendo Switch?

PICO PARK and PICO PARK 2

  • PICO PARK: two to eight players. The game is built around an eight-player maximum, so it is the best fit here for a large group gathered around one screen.
  • PICO PARK 2: two to eight players locally or online. Nintendo says up to seven players can join online with one Nintendo Switch, meaning the host plus seven remote participants can fill the eight-player maximum.

For PICO PARK 2, Nintendo states that multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player. An eight-player local session therefore needs eight compatible controllers, not merely eight people and the console. Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers are a practical way to add individual controllers, but check that every controller is paired and recognized before launching the session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat

  • Local: one to four players.
  • Online: two to four players.

A single player can use the campaign and practice content, but the game’s design is most expressive when two to four people divide kitchen duties. A fifth person cannot join the same local kitchen under the listed player limit, so plan a rotation if your gathering is larger.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

  • Local: up to four players on one Switch.
  • Online: Co-Op Rooms can include up to 12 friends, with up to four players on a course.

If your group has more than four people, Wonder’s room size should not be confused with a 12-player level. You can include more friends in the online room, but the active course party remains capped at four.

Which game is hardest?

There is no single objective difficulty ranking in the available official descriptions. The games make different demands, so the useful question is: which type of pressure is hardest for your group?

PICO PARK: hardest when communication breaks down

PICO PARK’s difficulty is collective. A player may understand the local move perfectly, yet the level fails because another player moved too soon, blocked a route or missed the timing window. As the number of players rises, there are more positions and intentions to coordinate. The eight-player ceiling is also the reason the game can feel wonderfully social—and why a noisy group can struggle to agree on a plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The original PICO PARK has 48 levels that all require cooperation. PICO PARK 2 explicitly tunes level difficulty to the number of players, which should make the sequel the more carefully scaled option for groups of different sizes. Its Dark mode is the clearest choice for players asking for the toughest official variant.

Overcooked: hardest when speed and multitasking collide

Overcooked adds a clock to every decision. You must remember recipes, move through an obstructed kitchen, prevent food from burning, deliver orders in the right sequence and recover when a teammate occupies the space you needed. The challenge is not simply executing one difficult action; it is continuously reprioritizing while the timer removes the opportunity to pause.

For players who are comfortable with platforming but dislike countdowns, Overcooked may feel harder than PICO PARK. For a group that communicates well under pressure, the opposite can be true: a clear kitchen division of labor can stabilize a stage, while PICO PARK can still fail if one person mistimes a shared movement.

Wonder: hardest when precision platforming is the bottleneck

Wonder’s demanding moments come from movement accuracy, enemy hazards and optional challenges in its courses. Its broader platforming structure and more forgiving character options can make it the easiest entry point for a mixed-skill family, but that does not make every course easy. Players who are new to platformers may still need repeated attempts on precise sections.

In practical terms:

  • Most coordination-dependent: PICO PARK and PICO PARK 2.
  • Most time-pressured: Overcooked! All You Can Eat.
  • Most approachable for varied experience levels: Super Mario Bros. Wonder, especially when the group uses its more forgiving character options.
  • Most explicitly difficult optional mode: PICO PARK 2’s Dark mode.

Modes, length and replay value

Game Core progression Alternative modes What keeps a group returning
PICO PARK 48 cooperative levels Battle, Endless Replaying puzzles with different group roles, then competing in Battle or chasing scores
PICO PARK 2 60 World levels Seven Endless variations, Battle, Dark More World content, group-size tuning, cross-play and a deliberately difficult mode
Overcooked! All You Can Eat Campaign Survival, Practice, Assist Improving kitchen ratings, learning routes and replaying stages with different job assignments
Super Mario Bros. Wonder World-map platforming and courses Wonder Flower variations and online Co-Op Rooms Exploring a longer adventure, revisiting courses and helping players with different skill levels

PICO PARK’s modes are compact and session-friendly: a group can retry one puzzle repeatedly without committing to a long campaign. Wonder has the strongest adventure shape, while Overcooked sits between them as a stage-based game whose replay value comes from mastering execution and time management.

Choosing by group size and personality

Five to eight people in the same room

Start with PICO PARK or PICO PARK 2. They are the only options in this comparison designed for up to eight local players. Choose the original if 48 levels and the basic cooperative loop are enough. Choose PICO PARK 2 if you want 60 World levels, seven Endless variations, cross-play or Dark mode.

Two to four players who like frantic teamwork

Choose Overcooked! All You Can Eat when the fun is in assigning jobs, reacting to a timer and recovering from kitchen disasters. Its Assist mode is useful when new players need less pressure before taking on the normal challenge.

Families or mixed-skill players seeking a longer adventure

Choose Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Four people can play locally, the world-map structure gives the session a sense of progress, and the character options let the group accommodate different platforming experience. Remember that online rooms may include up to 12 friends while a course still has only four active players.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A group split across systems

PICO PARK 2 is the clearest fit because its official description includes cross-play for up to eight players. Confirm that every participant’s platform and network setup are compatible before scheduling a full group session.

Setting up a large local session

  1. Count the players first. If there are five to eight people, select PICO PARK or PICO PARK 2. If there are four or fewer, all three games remain possible.
  2. Count controllers, not just people. For PICO PARK 2, Nintendo requires one compatible controller per player. Prepare eight for a full local room.
  3. Pair and test every controller. Open the Switch controller settings, pair each device and verify that each player can move before starting a level.
  4. Choose the pressure level. Use standard PICO PARK World levels for cooperative problem-solving, PICO PARK 2 Dark for an explicitly difficult variant, Overcooked Assist for a gentler introduction, or Wonder’s more forgiving character options for mixed abilities.
  5. Set a communication rule. In PICO PARK, appoint one person to call timing when the group is stuck. In Overcooked, assign kitchen jobs and a person to watch order priority. In Wonder, decide whether the group is progressing together or allowing stronger players to guide newer ones.
  6. Plan rotations for oversized gatherings. Overcooked and Wonder cap active local play at four, so a larger party needs turns. PICO PARK can seat more players, but eight controllers and a screen position where everyone can see the action are still required.

Common problems and practical fixes

“We have eight people, but not enough controllers.”

The player count on the box or store page does not supply hardware. For PICO PARK 2, provide one compatible controller for each participant. Pair extra Joy-Con controllers or other compatible devices before opening multiplayer.

“The online number sounds larger than the course limit.”

This is the Wonder distinction: up to 12 friends can be in an online Co-Op Room, but only four players are active on a course. Organize a four-person course party and use the room for the wider social group.

“Everyone keeps failing the same PICO PARK puzzle.”

Stop treating the level as a race. Identify the exact player whose position controls the next move, agree on a verbal countdown and move one person at a time. Because everyone must reach the goal, a fast individual solution is not enough if it strands another player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Overcooked feels chaotic immediately.”

Use Practice or Assist mode, then assign fixed jobs for the first attempts. One player can focus on preparation, another on cooking and another on serving and dishes. Change jobs only after the team understands the kitchen route; constant role swapping creates extra collisions.

“A new platforming player cannot keep up in Wonder.”

Select a more forgiving character option, let the player follow the group rather than lead, and replay a course without making optional collectibles the first objective. Wonder’s structure allows the group to build confidence over several courses instead of requiring one exact cooperative solution every time.

Final recommendation by scenario

Your situation Best choice Why
Six to eight people sharing one Switch PICO PARK 2 Eight-player support, 60 World levels, group-size tuning, cross-play and Dark mode
Five to eight people who want the simplest version PICO PARK 48 cooperation-focused levels plus Battle and Endless modes
Two to four players who love timers Overcooked! All You Can Eat Kitchen multitasking, campaign and Survival, with Practice and Assist for learning
Parents, children and mixed platforming ability Super Mario Bros. Wonder Four local players, a longer adventure and more forgiving character options
Players asking for the most intentionally punishing option PICO PARK 2 Dark mode Nintendo describes Dark as “slightly unfair, somewhat difficult”

PICO PARK is not a direct replacement for either comparison game. It is better when the group wants everyone solving the same spatial problem, Overcooked is better when the group wants a frantic service operation, and Wonder is better when the group wants to travel through a platforming adventure. For a large local party, player count alone makes PICO PARK the practical winner; for four or fewer players, the deciding factor is whether your group prefers coordination puzzles, timed multitasking or platforming exploration.
