His later whereabouts—and whether he survives—depend on when you reach key events and on your game state.
Where to find Pilby in Bone Bottom
Look to the right of the bench in Bone Bottom for the character initially identified as “Little Pilgrim.” Talk to him there to begin his conversation sequence. The Hollow Knight Wiki’s Pilby guide describes five conversations that become available as Hornet reaches progression milestones.

How to get Pilby to tell you his name
- Visit Pilby in Bone Bottom and speak with him.
- Return to him as you reach the game’s progression milestones, completing all five staged conversations listed by the wiki.
- After those five conversations have been marked, speak with him again. That additional interaction prompts him to reveal his name.
The wiki reproduces Pilby saying, “Rest here with me as long as you like. I’m not ready to leave yet, and a little company is always nice.”
Spoilers: Pilby’s fate and later location
The outcomes below are conditional rather than one guaranteed route. Before acting on late-game guidance, check your current act, whether you spoke with Pilby in Bone Bottom, whether the relevant progression requirements are met, and the state of the Rhinogrund gate or Pilgrim’s Rest mechanism. These event details are described by the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki.

Can Pilby die in Bone Bottom?
After you slay the first Skull Tyrant, resting on a bench in Bone Bottom can trigger an attack under certain conditions. If that event occurs during Act 1, Pilby is killed; a funeral follows after the bench is repaired. The wiki describes this as a conditional event, not an inevitable result of defeating the Skull Tyrant.
What happens if Pilby leaves Bone Bottom?
If the attack has not occurred before Act 2 begins, Pilby leaves Bone Bottom. According to the wiki, if you never spoke with him before that point, he does not appear again.

When can Pilby appear at Pilgrim’s Rest?
The wiki lists several conditions for his arrival: you must have spoken with him in Bone Bottom, and you must meet a progression requirement—either have Threefold Melody and lift access to the Cradle, or have the Faydown Cloak. Rhinogrund and door safety conditions also affect the route. A Pilby sighting at Pilgrim’s Rest is therefore not assured just by reaching the area.
If you find him there, he leaves after Hornet rests on a bench outside Far Fields. The timing matters: the wiki says releasing the Rhinogrund while Pilby is inside Pilgrim’s Rest can put the creature in the same building after a later bench rest, where it can kill Pilby on contact. The described state may allow you to interact with Pilby before provoking the Rhinogrund, but do not treat the building as safe without checking the gate and mechanism state.

A later conversation with Pilby
The wiki also records an exchange after Hornet visits saved Bellhart. Hornet tells Pilby, “I see no shame in it, sir. Your life is your own, and need not be squandered at the ghostly call of the Citadel. Journey out for your own sake, or not at all.” Pilby replies, “Heh… you truly aren’t a pilgrim, that’s for certain. That’s blasphemy, spoken with friendly intentions or not. And yet… I don’t recoil from what you say. Perhaps I’m not much of a pilgrim either.”

- Still in Bone Bottom, before Act 2: Talk to Pilby and complete the staged conversations as they unlock.
- Act 1, after the first Skull Tyrant: A Bone Bottom bench rest can trigger the attack under the conditions described above.
- Act 2, with no prior Bone Bottom conversation: The wiki says Pilby does not appear again.
- Seeking him at Pilgrim’s Rest: Confirm you spoke with him earlier, have one of the listed progression routes, and have checked the Rhinogrund and door states before resting or changing the mechanism.
The route and dialogue details here come from a community-maintained wiki, rather than a developer-authored walkthrough. Team Cherry’s official games page identifies Silksong and points to physical editions, while its September 4, 2025 release announcement confirms the game’s release; neither source documents Pilby’s specific event flags.
