For a sensible smooth-performance target, build around Planet Zoo 2’s recommended PC specification: Windows 11, an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 16 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA RTX 3070, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, or Intel Arc A770. You also need DirectX 12 and 40 GB of free storage, with an SSD required at the recommended tier.
The official minimum is substantially higher than a basic office computer: Windows 10 or 11, an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB of RAM, and an RTX 2060, RX 5600 XT, or Arc A750-class graphics card. Frontier Developments and Steam do not publish a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, zoo size, animal count, or benchmark method, so “smooth” here means using the recommended tier as the safer hardware target rather than promising a specific FPS result.

These requirements describe two hardware floors, not two guaranteed performance presets. The minimum configuration indicates the class of computer the game expects to start and run on. The recommended configuration is the more prudent target for players who want headroom for a demanding simulation without relying on unknown compromises to resolution or image quality.

What the minimum specification really tells you
The minimum is not a low-end gaming-PC target. It already calls for a six- to eight-core desktop-class processor from an older performance generation, 16 GB of system memory, and a discrete graphics card with at least 6 GB of VRAM in the listed NVIDIA and AMD examples. An Arc A750 is listed with 8 GB of VRAM.
A computer that has 16 GB of RAM but an older processor or integrated graphics does not meet the requirement. Every major category matters: the CPU, GPU, memory, operating system, DirectX support, and available storage must all be checked.
Minimum-tier systems
A system matching the minimum list is best treated as an entry point for running the game. Actual performance can vary with display resolution, graphics settings, background applications, driver versions, and the size and complexity of the zoo. Because Frontier has not published a benchmark result, it would be inaccurate to promise a particular FPS number or claim that every minimum-tier computer will feel smooth in every situation.

Recommended-tier systems
The recommended list raises the processor to the Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 5800X class and the graphics card to the RTX 3070, RX 6700 XT, or Arc A770 class. It still lists 16 GB of RAM, so the principal jump is CPU and GPU capability rather than a larger memory allowance. The recommended tier also changes the storage guidance from “SSD recommended” to “SSD required.”
How to check whether your PC qualifies
Use the following sequence before buying the game or planning an upgrade. Compare the exact model names, not just the amount of RAM or the product family.
- Check Windows: Open Settings > System > About and confirm that the edition is Windows 10 or 11 for minimum support. Windows 11 is the listed recommended operating system.
- Identify the processor: In Settings > System > About, note the full CPU model. It should meet or exceed the i7-8700K/Ryzen 5 3600 class for minimum, or the i7-10700K/Ryzen 7 5800X class for the safer recommended target.
- Identify the graphics card and VRAM: Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, or use the Windows System Information and DirectX Diagnostic Tool utilities. Compare the GPU model and dedicated video memory with the table above.
- Check installed memory: In Settings > System > About, verify that the computer has at least 16 GB of RAM. This is the published amount in both tiers.
- Check DirectX: Press
Win+R, enterdxdiag, and read the DirectX version on the System tab. Planet Zoo 2 lists DirectX 12. - Check free space and drive type: In Settings > System > Storage, confirm at least 40 GB is free on the installation drive. In Task Manager > Performance, identify whether that drive is an SSD or a hard disk drive.
If any item is below the minimum, the computer is not an official minimum-spec match even if the other components are stronger.

CPU requirements: why the processor tier matters
The minimum processors are an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600. The recommended processors are a Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 5800X. These are different generations and performance classes, so the model number alone is not enough to judge an upgrade; a newer low-power laptop chip, for example, cannot automatically be assumed equivalent to a listed desktop processor.

Planet Zoo 2 is a management simulation in which the workload can change as a park grows. The official listing does not state how CPU load scales with visitor numbers, animals, staff, or construction, and it gives no zoo-size benchmark. Treat the recommended CPU as useful headroom for larger or busier parks, not as proof of a particular simulation speed.
When a CPU upgrade is practical
- If your processor is below the i7-8700K/Ryzen 5 3600 class, check motherboard socket, chipset support, BIOS compatibility, cooling, and power delivery before choosing a replacement.
- A processor upgrade may require a new motherboard and, depending on the platform, new memory. Price the complete platform rather than the CPU alone.
- If the existing CPU meets the recommended class but the GPU does not, a graphics-card upgrade is likely the more direct way to close the published gap.
GPU and VRAM requirements
The graphics requirement rises from an RTX 2060, RX 5600 XT, or Arc A750 at minimum to an RTX 3070, RX 6700 XT, or Arc A770 at recommended. The listed VRAM also changes: 6 GB for the RTX 2060 and RX 5600 XT, 8 GB for the Arc A750, then 8 GB for the RTX 3070, 12 GB for the RX 6700 XT, and 16 GB for the Arc A770.
VRAM capacity is only one part of GPU capability. Do not treat a card with the same memory amount as automatically equivalent; architecture, driver support, bandwidth, and overall performance also matter. The official list provides comparison points, not a universal ranking of every graphics card.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLaptop graphics caution
Laptop GPUs can carry the same family name as desktop cards while operating at different power limits. Compare the exact laptop GPU model and its configured wattage where available. The published requirements do not provide laptop-specific equivalencies, so a mobile part should not be assumed to match a desktop example solely from its branding.

RAM, storage, Windows and DirectX
16 GB of RAM is the stated floor
Both official tiers specify 16 GB of system memory. That makes 16 GB the requirement floor, not a reason to ignore the CPU and GPU. A machine with 16 GB but an under-spec processor or graphics card still falls short.
If your computer has less than 16 GB, a 16 GB kit is a defensible upgrade target, but verify the motherboard’s supported memory generation, form factor, speed limits, slot count, and maximum capacity first. The requirement does not say whether DDR4 or DDR5 should be used, so select the type compatible with your existing platform rather than buying by capacity alone.
40 GB of space and SSD guidance
Planet Zoo 2 lists 40 GB of available storage. The minimum tier recommends an SSD; the recommended tier requires one. Leave additional free space for operating-system updates, shader caches, save files, and other applications instead of filling a 40 GB drive to its limit.

Operating system and API
Windows 10 or Windows 11 is listed for minimum, while Windows 11 is listed for recommended. Both tiers require DirectX 12. Keep Windows, the graphics driver, and motherboard firmware current, but do not assume an update can make hardware below the published minimum compliant.

The right choice depends on which parts are below the requirement and how many platform changes are involved.
| Your situation | Most defensible path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 16 GB RAM, but CPU and GPU already meet the recommended class | Upgrade memory to at least 16 GB after checking compatibility | Memory is a clear published requirement and usually does not require replacing the graphics card. |
| Hard drive only, with otherwise recommended hardware | Install the game on an SSD with more than 40 GB free | An SSD is required by the recommended listing; the source does not promise an FPS increase. |
| Meets minimum GPU but not recommended GPU | Consider a GPU upgrade, subject to power-supply, case, and connector limits | The main published difference between tiers is graphics capability and VRAM. |
| Below both CPU and GPU minimums | Compare a complete replacement gaming PC with the cost of a new platform and graphics card | Replacing several interdependent parts can cost more and create compatibility issues. |
| Meets minimum CPU/GPU but has an unsupported OS or no DirectX 12 support | Resolve the operating-system or platform limitation first | Hardware alone cannot satisfy every listed requirement. |
No current retailer pricing is established here, so calculate an upgrade or replacement using your local prices, power-supply capacity, case clearance, cooling, motherboard compatibility, and Windows license situation.

- Using RAM as the only test: 16 GB is required, but it does not compensate for an under-spec CPU or GPU.
- Calling minimum “smooth” by default: The listing supplies no FPS or preset guarantee. Describe minimum as the entry point and recommended as the safer target.
- Comparing VRAM numbers alone: 8 GB on two different GPUs does not establish equal performance.
- Buying an incompatible memory kit: Check DDR generation, physical format, motherboard limits, and free slots before ordering.
- Installing to a nearly full hard drive: The requirement is 40 GB available, and recommended systems require an SSD. Confirm both capacity and drive type.
- Assuming a laptop model matches a desktop card: Verify the exact mobile GPU and power configuration.
- Expecting software optimization to bypass the specification: Settings changes may alter visual load, but they cannot turn unsupported hardware into an official match.
What “smooth performance” can be stated with confidence
The strongest evidence-based recommendation is to aim for the complete recommended tier: Windows 11, Core i7-10700K/Ryzen 7 5800X-class CPU, 16 GB RAM, RTX 3070/RX 6700 XT/Arc A770-class GPU, DirectX 12, and an SSD with 40 GB available. That configuration gives more headroom than the minimum list, but it is not an official FPS promise.
Performance will still depend on the resolution and settings you select, background software, drivers, thermal limits, and how demanding your park becomes. Frontier Developments has not published a guaranteed frame rate, benchmark methodology, or zoo-size limit for either specification.
