For the easiest, most reliable way to play classic horror today, choose an official remake first, then an official PC port, remaster, or collection. If neither exists, check whether the exact game is supported by your console or a current subscription catalog; original hardware and a lawful emulator are the fallback routes. The right choice depends on whether you want the old game itself or a modern reinterpretation: the original Resident Evil trilogy is available for Windows 10 and 11, while the 1999 Silent Hill still has no modern port.
Which version of a classic horror game should I choose?
First decide whether you want the historical game or a new version built from it. A remake can change camera, combat, environments, and pacing; a port or remaster usually preserves more of the original structure, though it may still alter presentation or controls. A familiar title alone does not tell you which version a store is selling.

- Choose the official remake if you want the most straightforward setup and modern presentation. Expect possible changes to camera, combat, and level design.
- Choose an official port, remaster, or collection if you want an older game adapted for current systems. Check what version it contains and whether its upgrades change the original presentation.
- Check backward compatibility or a subscription classics catalog for the exact title and your region. Catalog membership changes, and a service’s general classics section does not prove that a particular game is currently included.
- Use original hardware if authenticity matters and you can get working hardware and media.
- Consider a lawful emulator setup if other routes do not work and you have game files and firmware you are permitted to use.
That order balances convenience, fidelity, and setup. For example, the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake is not the 2001 game, and the HD version of the 2002 Resident Evil remake is not the 1996 original.
How can I play the original Resident Evil games on Windows 11?
The original PC releases of Resident Evil (1996), Resident Evil 2 (1998), and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) have modern Windows versions maintained by GOG. GOG restored the games beginning in June 2024; the same builds arrived on Steam on April 1, 2026. These are ports of the old PC releases, not the original PlayStation binaries and not the later remakes.

GOG’s product information lists Windows 10 and 11 compatibility, an improved DirectX renderer, windowed mode, VSync, gamma adjustment, integer scaling, anti-aliasing, cloud saves, and support for modern controllers. It also lists four localizations: English, German, French, and Japanese. The updated video player and cutscene timing address issues in the PC releases, although the games retain the look and structure of their era. A July 2024 review by Bloody Disgusting noted that the original PC release’s pre-rendered cutscenes can look choppy; that was a trait of the PC version, not a new remake feature.
GOG or Steam for the original Resident Evil trilogy?
The builds are the same GOG-handled ports, but their ownership and DRM arrangements differ. GOG says its versions have no DRM, can be played offline, and do not require its Galaxy client. Steam’s releases add Steam DRM; reporting on their April 2026 launch also described use of The Enigma Protector, Steam Deck registry work, and weak 4:3 fullscreen handling. If you want DRM-free offline installers and the documented scaling options, GOG is the clearest fit. Steam may suit someone who prefers keeping games in a Steam library, but that is not the same ownership model.

At Steam launch, each game had a list price of $9.99 / £7.99, with a 50% launch discount through April 15, 2026, according to VGC. Those are historical launch prices and a past promotion, not a statement of current store pricing. GOG listed the original Resident Evil at 4.7/5 from 1,840 user reviews in 2026; GOG’s representative said in 2025 that the trilogy had 94% positive reviews on the platform.
Which controls and settings suit the original games?
The GOG ports support modern controllers, including DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, and Logitech F-series pads; later hotfixes added support for additional devices, including DualSense Edge and Switch 2 Pro. A modern Xbox or PlayStation pad is a practical choice; you do not need an original DualShock just to play tank-control games. Set up a per-game layout for movement, action, inventory, map, and cancel before starting a long session.
Keep the image at its original 4:3 shape rather than stretching it to fill a widescreen display. Integer scaling can keep pixels evenly sized, while windowed mode and gamma adjustment can help with display compatibility and visibility. Do not force a higher frame rate just because a modern computer can produce one: timing can be part of how a classic game functions. GOG’s notes about solving 30-fps gameplay alongside 60-fps transitions in its Resident Evil port illustrate why frame timing should be treated as a compatibility issue, not an automatic upgrade.
The older games also retain their original survival-horror friction: limited inventory, item boxes, and ink-ribbon saves. Keep more than one in-game save when the game permits it. Cloud saves on a modern port can protect that port’s files, but they do not turn a 1996 game save into one for the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake.
Should I play the original Resident Evil or a remake?
Choose the original PC trilogy if you want the historical games: fixed-camera rooms, tank controls, period-specific pacing, and the original resource-management systems. Choose a remake or remaster if you want a more modern presentation and are comfortable with changes to camera or controls. These are different experiences rather than interchangeable editions.

| Version | What it is | Good fit if you want | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil (1996) PC port | Modernized release of the original PC game | The old game’s fixed-camera structure and historical design | Not the 2002 remake or the later remakes |
| Resident Evil HD Remaster | HD version of the 2002 remake, released on Steam in 2015 | A classic survival-horror structure with updated presentation | Supports 16:9 with a scrolling 4:3 frame; offers original tank controls or an alternate analog scheme |
| Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) | A modern reworking of the 1998 game | A current reinterpretation rather than the original fixed-camera game | Not the 1998 PC port restored by GOG |
The HD Remaster’s Steam listing recommends a genuine Xbox 360 PC-compatible controller or comparable XInput gamepad. Its alternate control scheme lets you move in the direction you push the analog stick, and the listing says you can switch schemes in real time. Capcom also lists a Resident Evil Remake Trilogy for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Steam on PC. Confirm the edition and included games in your region; a bundle name by itself is not a contents list.
Can I play Silent Hill 1 on PS5 or other modern hardware?
There is no modern port or remaster of the 1999 Silent Hill in the available reporting. Polygon reported in February 2026 that its legal routes remain older hardware and a few legacy digital licenses, rather than a native PS5, current Xbox, or modern PC release. The game has no modern official port simply because the available evidence does not establish a reason for its absence; Konami’s remake activity does not restore the original game’s files to current storefronts.
- Original PlayStation: play a legitimate disc on working original hardware. Optical media can deteriorate, and disc condition matters.
- PlayStation 2: backward compatibility provides another hardware route for the original disc.
- PlayStation 3: a digital license may be purchased through the PS3 store. Polygon reported that a bank card cannot be used directly for PS3 store purchases; add funds to the wallet first. Store access and purchasing rules can change, so confirm the process on the console.
- PSP: this is only a route for people who bought the game before the PSP store closed in 2021.
- PS Vita: the reported route is Remote Play through a PS3, not a native Vita release.
Polygon reported eBay asking prices from $300 to $2,000 for physical copies in February 2026. That wide, dated range is not a reliable current valuation, but it shows why original hardware is a costly and uncertain route for this particular game. Disc rot is also a documented concern for its optical media.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe remake of Silent Hill 2, released in 2024, is not a substitute for the original Silent Hill. It is a separate game. GOG’s Dreamlist had the 1999 original at 116,577 votes and the original Silent Hill 2 at 115,645 votes in figures reported by Polygon in February 2026. A high request count reflects interest, not a confirmed release.
What is different about the Silent Hill 2 remake?
The 2024 remake is the easiest current way to play a modern version of Silent Hill 2, but it changes core presentation. Steam’s description says it replaces the original’s fixed-camera viewpoints with an over-the-shoulder camera; combat adds mechanics such as dodging and aiming down sights, and environments are expanded. If you specifically want the 2001 game’s fixed-camera framing, movement, and original visual atmosphere, the remake does not provide that version.
The remake is available on PlayStation 5 and Steam for PC. Steam’s minimum listing specifies 64-bit Windows 10, an Intel Core i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1070 Ti, RX 5700, or Arc A750 graphics card, and 50 GB of storage; an SSD is recommended. The stated minimum target is 1080p on Low/Medium settings at a stable 30 FPS. Treat those as the game’s listed requirements and target, not as an independent performance test. Steam showed English reviews as Very Positive, with 94% of 24,082 reviews positive in figures accessed October 29, 2026.
On modern Xbox consoles, Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 are available through the HD Collection. The collection has been widely criticized for quality problems dating to its poor launch, and the cited coverage reported that it remained unfixed. It is therefore a compatibility route, not a version to assume is equivalent to the original games or to the 2024 remake.

Which other classic horror games have official modern PC versions?
For PC players, maintained storefront releases can be simpler and more dependable than trying to install an old disc. GOG’s Preservation Program is a Windows-focused catalog intended to keep older games playable on modern systems. GOG’s public figures in 2026 listed 331 games, an average rating of 4.2/5, and 1,704 game improvements. The counter is a snapshot, not a guarantee that every listed title works on every PC configuration.
Alongside the original Resident Evil games, the catalog includes Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2, which were added in January 2025, plus horror or horror-adjacent titles such as Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy 1+2+3, Clive Barker’s Undying, Cold Fear, and F.E.A.R. Platinum. The catalog also includes I Am Alive, Metro 2033, and Metro: Last Light. Check the individual system requirements and supported operating systems for the release you want; the program itself is Windows-only.
Silent Hill 4: The Room is another useful case: its original PC version is sold on GOG, not Steam, according to the cited storefront coverage. The GOG page labels it “Only On GOG” and includes it in the Preservation Program. Its listed improvements include widescreen support up to 4K, a new DirectX renderer, integer scaling, restored missing hauntings, 30-fps cutscenes instead of 15, and modern controller support with hot-plug and rumble. The listing specifies Windows 10, a 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, a DirectX 9.0c GPU, and 5 GB of storage as minimum requirements. GOG showed a 4.5/5 rating from 1,346 reviews in 2026.
Which Resident Evil games are still stranded on older hardware?
Most of the mainline series now has a path on modern systems, but not every spin-off does. GameRant reported in January 2026 that about 30 Resident Evil games had been released in North America and identified six without an official route on modern hardware:

- Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2
- Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
Some other spin-offs have limited paths, such as PS3 streaming for Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles, or Xbox 360 backward compatibility. Resident Evil Re:Verse is no longer playable because its servers shut down. The two Outbreak games were built around online-era PS2 play, so preserving a disc image alone would not recreate their original network experience.
Do not assume that a new compatibility feature solves these gaps. The Xbox backward-compatibility preview on Windows PCs and handhelds began July 22, 2026, with four original Xbox games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. None is a classic survival-horror title.
How do original hardware and console subscriptions fit in?
Console options depend on the platform, exact edition, region, and license. PS5 can play current remakes, but it does not natively read original PS1 discs. Some PS3, PSP, and Vita licenses remain trapped on their older storefronts. Xbox Series consoles have current remake releases and some backward-compatible titles, while Nintendo Switch Online offers classics catalogs for NES, SNES, N64, and Game Boy. Those catalogs do not amount to a general library of every older horror game: GameRant noted that Resident Evil Gaiden, despite being a Game Boy Color game, was not in the service.

PlayStation Plus offers a Classics Catalog as a subscription feature, but catalog availability changes. Reporting in 2024 and January 2026 cited original Resident Evil availability through PlayStation Plus; the official A–Z page did not establish that every original Resident Evil or Silent Hill title remains included now. Look up the exact game on the relevant regional store before subscribing or assuming access. A subscription license is not the same as a permanent purchase.
If you choose original hardware, plan for more than the console and disc. You may need compatible controllers, memory cards or original save media, replacement cables, and a display connection that accepts the console’s output. Older signals can be rejected, cropped, or stretched by modern televisions; a converter or scaler can add lag. Confirm that the console revision, disc region, and accessories match, and test the console, disc, controller, and save media separately. For original PlayStation hardware, use a converter that is electrically compatible; a picture or input-delay problem may be caused by the display chain rather than a game setting.
Is emulating a classic horror game legal?
An emulator is software that reproduces a console’s behavior; the emulator itself and the copyrighted game files are separate legal questions. As the AV Club put it in April 2026, “emulating is perfectly legal most of the time, but downloading ROMs and ISOs—the files corresponding to specific games—aren’t so much.” Laws differ by jurisdiction, and possessing a disc does not automatically make every method of obtaining a digital copy lawful.
Use only software, game data, and BIOS or firmware files you are allowed to possess and use where you live. Do not download someone else’s copyrighted game files just because an emulator is legal, and do not treat a public archive as a license to use commercial console ROMs. BIOS files, firmware, and trademarks may have their own conditions. If you cannot establish that your setup is lawful, choose an official release or original hardware instead.
Compatibility also varies by game and emulator core version. Start at native resolution and original timing; increase internal resolution one step at a time while watching for broken fog, transparency effects, or audio desynchronization. Those details matter particularly in Silent Hill, where fog and sound contribute to the intended presentation. Save states can be convenient, but they are not a substitute for the game’s own save system; back up in-game saves before changing emulator versions.

Preserving the original presentation is often more reliable than maximizing every display setting. Many games were designed for 4:3 screens and fixed frame timing; forcing widescreen or unlocking the frame rate can distort the image or disrupt timing.
- Aspect ratio: use 4:3 where the game offers it. Stretching to 16:9 warps characters and room geometry. Some modern releases add their own widescreen modes, such as the scrolling 4:3 frame in Resident Evil HD Remaster; that is a design choice of that remaster, not a feature of the 1996 game.
- Frame rate: retain the release’s supported timing unless the port documents an alternative. A game’s logic, transitions, or audio can depend on frame timing.
- Audio: headphones can make positional cues easier to hear. If a television’s virtual-surround processing makes effects sound wrong, disable that processing before changing in-game settings.
- Controls: map movement, aim or camera, inventory, map, interact, cancel, pause, and shoulder buttons. Save the profile per game so a layout change for one title does not disrupt another.
- Saves: distinguish modern autosaves from older manual systems. Keep multiple in-game save slots where available, especially in games with limited save resources.
The Xbox Wireless Controller is compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and 11, Android, and iOS, with Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth connections. Microsoft’s current product page lists up to 40 hours from AA batteries; battery life varies with use. On Windows, button mapping is available through the Xbox Accessories app. For the Resident Evil GOG ports, DualSense and Xbox pads are among the supported options; an Xbox pad is also a straightforward fit for the XInput recommendation on Resident Evil HD Remaster.

What should I do if an old PC disc will not install?
If an official GOG or Steam version exists, it is generally the simpler route than troubleshooting a 1990s installer. For a disc you already own, compatibility mode may help, but it cannot fix every limitation of a modern operating system.
- Check for an official rerelease first. It may include fixes for modern Windows, graphics, and controller support that are absent from the disc edition.
- Try Windows compatibility settings. Right-click the installer or game executable, choose Properties, then Compatibility. Test an appropriate older Windows compatibility mode, disable fullscreen optimizations, and try the high-DPI settings if the display is scaled incorrectly. Run as administrator only if the program needs the access and you trust the software.
- Identify the installer type. A 64-bit version of Windows cannot run a 16-bit installer. Compatibility mode does not remove that operating-system limitation.
- Use a wrapper only when it matches the game. Preservation communities use tools such as dgVoodoo2, nGlide, and DxWnd for particular graphics or display problems. DOS games may need DOSBox, which is bundled with some GOG releases. For stubborn Windows 95/98 3D software, 86Box can emulate period hardware more closely than a generic virtual machine.
- Check for legacy disc protection. SafeDisc or SecuROM can be a hard stop on current Windows. A legitimate DRM-free rerelease is the safer practical option than trying to bypass copy protection.
PCGamingWiki maintains per-title compatibility and patch information; verify that a suggested fix applies to the exact game version you own. An old installer failing to run does not mean the disc is defective, and a compatibility wrapper does not grant permission to use a game or files you do not own.
What is the best route for a particular game?
Use this quick decision map after confirming the exact edition and platform.
| Game or goal | Best-supported route | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Original Resident Evil 1–3 on Windows 10/11 | GOG port; Steam offers the same GOG-handled builds | These are the original PC releases restored for modern systems, not PlayStation binaries or remakes. |
| Modern Resident Evil play | Current remake, remaster, or listed remake bundle for the platform you own | Check which titles the particular bundle contains. |
| Original Silent Hill (1999) | PS1 or compatible PS2 hardware; a legacy PS3 digital license may be available | No modern port is established; physical copies are scarce and disc condition matters. |
| Modern Silent Hill 2 play | 2024 remake on PS5 or Steam | It changes camera, combat, and environments; it is not the 2001 original. |
| Original Silent Hill 4: The Room on PC | GOG’s maintained PC release | Its modern improvements and requirements are listed on the GOG product page. |
| A stranded console-only title | Check exact platform backward compatibility, then original hardware or lawful emulation | Availability differs by title, region, and license; compatibility is not universal. |
The practical rule is to buy or use the specific official version that matches your goal, rather than relying on a franchise name, bundle label, or subscription category. For preservation-focused play, keep the old aspect ratio and timing, use a controller profile suited to the game, and avoid treating a remake as the missing original.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the original Silent Hill not on PC?
There is no confirmed public explanation in the cited coverage for why the 1999 game has not received a modern PC release. Konami’s announced remake activity is separate from republishing the original software.
Can I buy Silent Hill 1 digitally on a PS3 now?
Polygon reported in February 2026 that a PS3 digital purchase remained a route, with wallet funds needed before checkout rather than direct bank-card payment. Store access and payment rules can change, so check the PS3 storefront itself before relying on that option.
