The simplest way to play the trilogy today is Mass Effect Legendary Edition, then follow the numbered order: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3. What exactly is Mass Effect Legendary Edition?
Legendary Edition is a remastered collection of the original trilogy, not a fourth Mass Effect game. It packages the three single-player campaigns into one product and adds visual and gameplay improvements, with the first Mass Effect receiving the most noticeable modernization. EA describes the collection as containing more than 40 DLC items.
That wording matters: the advertised content is single-player. It is the convenient way to experience Commander Shepard’s story, but it is not a replacement for the original Mass Effect 3 multiplayer mode. Do not buy the collection expecting a multiplayer component simply because the original trilogy once had one.

EA’s description says, “Your choices seamlessly travel from one game to the next.” In practice, the intended experience is one continuous Shepard storyline. Decisions made in the first game can affect events, relationships and available situations in the sequels, so playing in release order is more than a suggestion.
Which platforms can run the trilogy?
The modern collection is based on the PS4 and Xbox One console releases and a Windows PC release. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S owners play the corresponding last-generation versions through backward compatibility. Treat that distinction as important when you shop: there are no separate native PS5 or Series X|S editions established here.
Windows PC
EA lists Windows 10 64-bit, an AMD FX-8350 or Intel Core i5-3570 (or equivalent), 8 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible graphics processor and 120 GB of storage as minimum requirements. The recommended listing raises memory to 16 GB and calls for higher-tier processors and graphics hardware. The 120 GB figure is a published storage requirement, not a measured download size.
The supplied requirements are for Windows. They do not establish support for macOS or Linux, so do not assume that a computer running either operating system can install the game natively.
PlayStation
The console edition is labeled PS4 in Sony’s store. Sony states that it is playable on PS5, while warning that some PS4 features may be absent and that a system-software update may be required. A PS5 owner should therefore expect a compatible PS4 game, not a separately designed PS5 release.
Xbox
The Xbox edition is the Xbox One release. EA identifies optimized backward-compatible play on Xbox Series X|S. That means Series owners should select the Xbox route, but should still verify the exact edition shown by the store or seller before paying.

How do I install Legendary Edition on Windows?
Use a supported 64-bit Windows 10 system, meet the published hardware requirements and have at least 120 GB of available storage before starting. EA’s current purchase routes are digital: the EA app for Windows or Steam.

- Check the computer. Confirm 64-bit Windows 10, the minimum processor and graphics requirements, 8 GB of RAM and 120 GB of free storage. If the machine only meets the minimum, close other storage-heavy applications and leave room for the installer and updates.
- Choose the storefront. Open the EA app or Steam and search for Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Follow the selected storefront’s current purchase and account steps.
- Start the installation. Select the collection in your library, choose an installation location with enough capacity and allow the launcher to download all three campaigns and their included content.

EA’s purchase page has retained older legal language that mentions Origin, but that wording should not be treated as current setup guidance. The current routes identified for Windows are the EA app and Steam.
How do I play on PS4 or PS5?
For a digital copy, open the PlayStation Store, confirm that the listing is the PS4 version of Legendary Edition and install it on your PS4 or PS5. On PS5, read the compatibility notice because Sony says some PS4 features can be unavailable and a system update may be needed.
- Check the console model. If you are buying a disc, verify that the particular PS5 is a disc-drive model. A disc purchase is not a practical route for hardware that cannot read discs.
- Verify the listing. Confirm the platform label, region and whether the item is new or used. A PS4 disc should be identified as such; do not rely on a seller’s title alone.
- Install and update. Insert the disc or download the digital product, then allow the console to apply any required system or game updates.
- Start with Mass Effect. Select the first campaign, finish it, and continue to Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 in order.
Sony’s United States store currently marks the game as included with EA Play. Subscription catalogs can change and can differ by country, so verify the listing attached to your own account before relying on that route.

Use the Xbox One listing digitally through the Xbox store, or buy a verified physical Xbox copy if your console accepts discs. EA describes the Xbox One edition as optimized for backward-compatible play on Series X|S.
- Identify the hardware. Check whether your Xbox has a disc drive before choosing a physical product. A disc cannot be installed in a console that has no drive.
- Check the edition and region. Confirm that the listing is the Xbox One/Series-compatible release and that its region matches your account or console requirements.
- Install the collection. Download the digital edition or insert the physical discs, then follow the Xbox installation prompts and any update requests.
- Play in sequence. Launch Mass Effect first, then continue through Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 so your decisions remain part of the same trilogy run.
Some physical Xbox listings use two discs, and an owner has described an Xbox One/Series-labeled two-disc copy. That report does not establish that every seller’s package has the same discs, condition or contents; inspect the actual listing before purchase.
Should I buy the collection or use EA Play?
Ownership and subscription access solve different problems. Buying Legendary Edition gives you a persistent license for the collection on the storefront you choose. EA Play can provide catalog access while the title remains included, but it is not the same as owning the game and its availability is subject to the current service catalog.
Buy it when you want a permanent story game
- You intend to replay the trilogy over a long period.
- You want to avoid a subscription requirement after the initial purchase.

Consider EA Play when you already subscribe
- Your platform’s catalog currently lists Legendary Edition.

EA identifies Windows membership access, and Sony’s United States listing currently shows the game with EA Play. Those statements do not guarantee identical access in every country or on every platform. Check the live catalog attached to your account rather than relying on an old listing or a friend’s region.

What is the correct order for the trilogy?
Play the campaigns in this order: Mass Effect → Mass Effect 2 → Mass Effect 3. This follows the numbered story, introduces systems in their intended progression and lets the collection carry decisions forward.
- Mass Effect: create Shepard and establish the relationships, alliances and major decisions that shape the rest of the story.
- Mass Effect 2: import the completed Shepard where prompted, then make the next set of decisions with the first game’s consequences in mind.
- Mass Effect 3: import the continuing profile again and finish the trilogy with the accumulated state of the previous campaigns.
Starting with Mass Effect 2 or 3 is technically a way to launch a game, but it skips context and weakens the point of the connected save system. If you are replaying, use the same order again unless you deliberately want to explore a sequel as a standalone campaign.
Which DLC is included?
The collection includes more than 40 single-player DLC items. Published examples include Bring Down the Sky, Lair of the Shadow Broker, Arrival, From Ashes, Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, Leviathan, Omega and Citadel.
Those examples demonstrate the breadth of the package without proving that every historical trilogy add-on is present. The safe expectation is the official Legendary Edition content list, not an assumption that every item ever sold for the original releases has been reproduced.
The included additions are tied to the single-player collection. They do not turn Legendary Edition into a multiplayer edition, and the presence of a DLC name in a store description should not be read as a promise of online services from the original release.

Does Legendary Edition include Mass Effect 3 multiplayer?
No multiplayer mode is identified in the official Legendary Edition description; the collection is presented as three single-player campaigns with single-player DLC. If your main goal is the original Mass Effect 3 multiplayer experience, this is not the edition to choose on the evidence available here.

The launcher says there is not enough space
EA’s minimum listing calls for 120 GB of storage. Free additional capacity, select another drive, or remove unused files before starting the installation. Remember that the figure is a published requirement rather than a guaranteed final download size.
The console store shows a PS4 or Xbox One label
That label is expected. The current console releases are the PS4 and Xbox One versions, and the newer consoles run them through backward compatibility. Confirm that your PS5 or Series console is signed into the account that owns the compatible edition.
A disc will not install
Recheck the console’s disc-drive hardware, the disc region, the platform label and the condition of every disc. For Xbox packages, do not assume a seller’s “Series” wording means a single-disc product; inspect the contents described in the actual listing.
