Player housing is an in-game home or personal space that players can obtain and customize. It may be a place to decorate, a social hub, a source of character progression, or some combination—but “housing” does not guarantee any particular feature. How players get a home, who owns it, what it does, and whether it costs anything to keep all depend on the game.
What player housing means
Player housing is a game system that gives a player a persistent or personal space. That space might be an individual house, a shared guild estate, or a plot in a neighborhood. Games may let players furnish rooms, change layouts, invite visitors, or use the home for gameplay activities. Other systems focus more narrowly on collecting and placing decor.
There is no genre-wide rulebook. The word “house” alone does not tell you whether a home is purchased or unlocked, whether it belongs to a character or a group, or whether it affects progression.
What housing can add to a game
Personalization and collection
Many housing systems make furnishing and arranging a space part of play. For example, ZeniMax Online Studios described The Elder Scrolls Online’s Homestead as a way to own and personalize homes across Tamriel. Its 2017 basics guide discussed obtaining a first home, buying additional homes, and acquiring furnishings; those broad features do not establish the system’s current rules.

Gameplay progression
Housing can also be tied to character development. In its November 21, 2017 announcement for Eco Alpha 6.1, Strange Loop Games said well-furnished homes and a wider variety of room types increased skill-point gain. Matching furniture categories provided room bonuses, while a mix of room types activated a “balanced house multiplier.” The development team explained: “The goal of this feature is to put more individual incentive into the game, increasing the quality and size of your house in order to increase your skills.” These details describe Alpha 6.1, not necessarily the current version.
Shared bases and social spaces
Homes can serve a group as well as an individual. A 2013 Square Enix community Q&A about Final Fantasy XIV described Free Company estates as bases of operations, distinguishing additions that benefited one individual from additions that benefited the company’s members. That is a historical example of the difference between personal and group housing, not a guide to present-day availability or cost.

How housing systems differ
When comparing housing in two games, check the rules that shape what a home actually offers:
- Access and scarcity: Is a home bought, earned, or unlocked? Are plots limited or restricted to particular neighborhoods?
- Ownership: Does the home belong to a character, an account, an individual player, or a group?
- Customization: Can players place furnishings, change layouts, or save and share designs?
- Social access: Can other players visit? Are homes in public neighborhoods, private spaces, or group-owned areas?
- Gameplay value: Is housing decorative, social, or connected to progression or other practical activities? Confirm each function for the specific game.
- Ongoing obligations: Check for rent, upkeep, or inactivity rules rather than assuming a home is permanent or free to maintain.

Blizzard’s Customer Support Player Housing FAQ, posted December 2, 2025, is a living document, so its rules may change. At the time represented by that FAQ, purchasing a house required the Midnight expansion and completion of the introductory quest. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to find the rules for a particular game
Before pursuing a home, look for the game’s current official housing guide or support page and confirm the details that affect your plans: how to unlock or buy a property, who owns it, whether plots are limited, what customization is available, what visitors can do, and whether fees or inactivity rules apply. Historical announcements can explain why a system was designed a certain way, but they should not substitute for current rules.
