- Install games to local storage. Let the full game and its updates finish. A disc does not remove the installation requirement.
- Launch each game once online. This allows the console or PC to obtain the current license and exposes any “Xbox network required” warning before you leave coverage.
- Switch to offline mode. Press the Xbox button, then choose Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Go offline.

- An always-online game will not become offline-capable merely because you own its disc. Reported examples include Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Diablo IV.
- Installing a disc does not automatically create a permanent digital license.

What is Disc-to-Digital, and does it help offline play?
In 2026, Microsoft began rolling out a Disc-to-Digital option for eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. Jason Ronald announced Insider testing from 31 August 2026 and said, “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game.”
Reporting after the beta says the feature is open to everyone without requiring Game Pass. On a supported title, insert the disc while signed in, choose Claim Digital License from the game tile menu, and install the digital copy. The disc remains linked to the entitlement: Microsoft’s rules say, “The digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc.” Keep the disc; do not sell or discard it. Eligibility is title-specific, there is no complete public list, and original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are excluded. A Series S cannot perform the claim itself, although a license claimed on a disc-drive Xbox can then be installed on a disc-less console under Home Xbox rules.

Can you play Game Pass games offline?

You cannot play an uninstalled game offline. Series X|S games must run from the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card; Xbox One-generation games can run from a USB 3.1 external hard drive, according to published specifications and reporting. - Install the games and required updates before leaving coverage.
- Keep the console’s free space above the size of the next planned patch; some games need temporary space to update.

Developer licensing allows three offline-device designation changes per year for restrictive PC licenses. Xbox Play Anywhere titles can support two offline devices—one PC and one console.
