Usually, a studio closing does not automatically delete a PlayStation game you bought. But a digital purchase is a license tied to your PlayStation account, not permanent ownership of the game, and access can be affected by delisting, account or licensing problems, required third-party services, or the shutdown of online features. The practical risk depends less on the studio’s closure alone than on who controls the game and what it needs to run.
The terms discussed here are Sony Interactive Entertainment’s U.S. PlayStation terms and software EULA, accessed October 29, 2026. Terms and consumer rights can vary by country, and a particular title may have additional requirements.

Do you lose a PlayStation game when its studio shuts down?
Not automatically. A studio can close while the publisher, rights holder, PlayStation Store listing, account systems, and game servers continue operating. A closure may be one link in a chain that later affects access, but closure by itself does not establish that purchasers’ licenses have been revoked.
Several different organizations and services may be involved in a game’s continued availability. The developer creates or maintains it; a publisher may control distribution and rights; Sony operates the store and account infrastructure; and a separate company may run servers or require an account link. A studio shutting down does not necessarily shut down all of those other parts. Conversely, a publisher or rights holder can delist a game even if its original developer is still operating.

The key question is therefore not simply “Did the studio close?” It is “What does this specific game depend on, and who still operates those dependencies?” A self-contained game that can launch offline has fewer ongoing dependencies than an online-only game, but neither category comes with an unconditional promise of permanent access.
What do you actually buy from PlayStation Store?
Under PlayStation’s U.S. terms, a digital purchase is a personal license for private, non-commercial use—not ownership of the digital product. The PlayStation Terms of Service say: “When you order or purchase a product from PlayStation Store, you buy a personal license to use that product for private, non-commercial use.” The same terms explain: “This means you can use a Product in the ways described in the license, but do not own the product.”

Access is also tied to the purchasing account: Sony’s terms warn that closing or deleting that account may mean losing access to purchased content. If the game requires a linked account from its publisher or another third party, unlinking or deleting that account can also affect access. That means a receipt is useful proof of a transaction, but it is not a separate copy that can be moved freely between accounts or services.
This is a description of the cited U.S. contract language, not a universal statement about every country’s law. Local consumer-protection rules may affect what a seller can do or what remedies a purchaser has. Check the terms and applicable law for your region if a dispute arises.
What happens if a game is delisted?
Delisting means the game is no longer offered to new buyers through that store; it does not necessarily mean existing purchasers lose access at the same time. But PlayStation’s U.S. terms do not promise that every delisted game will remain downloadable forever.

Sony’s terms say access is subject to the applicable usage terms, and that content may be removed or a license may expire. They place responsibility on the purchaser to access content before removal and to handle authorized ongoing storage and safekeeping of downloaded content. They also say the buyer bears the risk of loss for downloaded content, including loss from corruption or hard-drive failure, and that PlayStation is not obligated to provide replacement copies.
In practical terms, distinguish three things: whether you can still buy a game, whether an existing account can still download it, and whether a local installation will still run. A store listing disappearing answers the first question. It does not, on its own, answer the other two. Their answers may depend on the title, the account’s entitlement, the console, the applicable terms, and any services the game calls when it starts.
If a title is still available to your account, downloading it while you can may reduce dependence on a future download, but it is not a guarantee against every failure. A console or storage device can fail, an installation can become corrupted, and a game may still need an online check or service to function. Do not treat a local copy as a permanent preservation guarantee.
Which games are most vulnerable to a shutdown?
Online-only games and games that require a server or third-party account to launch have the greatest risk of losing core functionality when a service ends. A game that offers offline play may retain more value after a shutdown, but its offline mode is not guaranteed to remain available.
Sony’s Software EULA says: “The Software is licensed to you on these Software Terms; it is not sold for you to own.” It also says Sony may end online and network features for software that uses online servers. If online services are discontinued, offline modes may still be accessible, but “offline modes are not guaranteed and may change or end at our discretion.”

Look beyond the label “single-player.” A game may have a story campaign but still require online authentication, a publisher account, server-hosted progression, streamed content, or downloadable assets. Those requirements can make an apparently offline experience dependent on ongoing services. Multiplayer is an obvious server dependency; it is not the only one.

This is a dependency guide, not a guarantee about an individual title. The game’s current requirements and terms matter more than its genre or whether its original studio remains open.
Are physical PlayStation games safer than digital games?
A disc can reduce dependence on the PlayStation Store for the base game, but it cannot guarantee that every part of the experience will survive a shutdown. PlayStation’s terms distinguish physical goods, such as a boxed game, from digital products licensed through the store.
Before relying on a disc for long-term access, check whether it contains a usable version of the game or whether an essential download is required. A disc may still depend on a patch, a server, an account, or separately licensed downloadable content. A physical copy may preserve access to the disc’s base-game data while online multiplayer, authentication, progression, or other features stop working.

How can you assess a game before buying it?
Check the game’s dependencies, not just whether it is sold digitally or on disc. Use these questions to make a title-specific decision:
- Can the base game play offline? Look for whether it launches and remains playable without game servers, rather than whether it merely has a single-player mode.
- Does it require an account beyond PlayStation? Check for mandatory linking to a publisher or other third-party account, and consider what happens if that account is closed or unlinked.
- Which features depend on servers? Identify whether servers support only multiplayer or also authentication, progression, core gameplay, or access to content.
- What is on the disc? For a physical edition, determine whether the disc contains a usable build and whether an essential download is required.
- Is important content separate? Check whether the experience you want depends on add-ons, downloadable assets, or separately licensed content.
- What would losing the account or service mean? Consider whether the game would still be useful to you if online features ended or a required third-party account became unavailable.
These checks cannot turn a license into permanent ownership or predict a publisher’s future decisions. They can, however, show whether a title’s value to you depends on services that may not last as long as the console or disc.
What can you do to protect access to games you already bought?
Keep your purchasing account secure, retain transaction records, and avoid assuming that a local installation or a delisted game will always be recoverable. Sony’s terms make account continuity and authorized storage relevant to access.
- Keep the PlayStation account used for the purchase in good standing and protect its sign-in details. Closing or deleting it can put access to purchased content at risk.
- Keep order confirmations or other transaction records. They can help identify the account and purchase if you need to troubleshoot, though they do not override the license terms.
- Download content while it is available to your account when practical. Treat that as a practical precaution, not a promise of indefinite redownloads or a replacement for backups that the terms do not guarantee.
- For games with a linked third-party account, keep that account accessible and review the game’s linking requirements before changing or closing it.
- If you prefer discs, retain the disc and check whether its edition needs downloads or online services for the features you use.
Why does my purchased game show a padlock?
A padlock can indicate a license or entitlement-recognition problem; it does not by itself prove that the game has been removed from your account. PlayStation Support’s troubleshooting guidance includes restoring licenses on the console.
Follow the official PlayStation Support instructions for your console to restore licenses, then check whether you are signed in to the account that bought the game. Restoring a license can help with an account or entitlement-recognition issue. It cannot restart a publisher’s discontinued servers, restore a service that has ended, or guarantee access to content that has been removed.

That distinction helps avoid chasing the wrong fix. If the base game is recognized but its online mode no longer connects, a license restore is unlikely to bring back a retired service. If the problem is a padlock on a purchase, first investigate account and license recognition rather than assuming the studio closure caused it.
Can you get a refund if access changes?
A refund is governed by the cancellation policy, not by a guarantee of permanent digital access. PlayStation’s current U.S. Store cancellation policy generally allows cancellation of a game or add-on within 14 days of purchase if downloading or streaming has not started, subject to the policy’s conditions.
That is a limited cancellation rule, not a promise that a purchase remains usable indefinitely. It also does not establish that a later studio closure automatically qualifies for a refund. For eligibility, exceptions, and region-specific rules, consult the current policy that applies to your account and purchase.
The official sources do not establish a reliable percentage of games that become unavailable specifically because a studio closes. The risk is real but title-specific; a general statistic would obscure the differences between an offline game, a delisted title, and a game that relies on live services.
