Choosing the published annual PlayStation plans instead saves about $51.89 on Essential, $68.89 on Extra, and $79.89 on Premium. Those calculations assume you keep the subscription for a full year and that the listed prices do not change.

Ultimate is therefore about $140.89 more than a year of PlayStation Plus Extra when calculated at the listed monthly rates, and about $115.89 more than Premium. That premium can be worthwhile if you use its additional platforms and launch releases; it is difficult to justify for a PS5-only household that will mostly download older games.
What PlayStation Plus actually includes
Essential: the baseline membership
Essential is the entry tier. It includes Monthly Games that members can add to their library and play while the membership remains active. Sony describes the benefit as games to download and keep as long as you remain a member; this is an active-subscription entitlement, not a permanent purchase that remains playable after cancellation.
Essential is the logical choice when your main reason for subscribing is online multiplayer and you are happy to select a small set of monthly games rather than browse a large on-demand catalog. Its annual price is also the lowest of the three PlayStation tiers.

Extra: a rotating PS4 and PS5 catalog
Extra includes everything in Essential plus a regularly refreshed Game Catalog of hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games. It also includes Ubisoft+ Classics. The catalog is an access benefit: games can have removal dates, and access to a title and its associated downloadable content ends when the game leaves the catalog or your membership expires.
Extra is cheaper than Ultimate at both the published annual PlayStation price and the comparable 12-month arithmetic. Its weakness is predictability. A game you plan to start later may leave before you get to it, so check the title’s current listing and any displayed removal date before treating the catalog as a long-term collection.
Premium: streaming, Classics, and trials
Premium adds cloud streaming, a Classics Catalog, selected Game Trials, and Sony Pictures Core in supported markets. These additions target specific use cases rather than every subscriber: a player who wants older PlayStation games, a way to test selected releases before buying, or streaming on supported hardware may value Premium’s $25 annual step up from Extra.
Premium should not be selected on the assumption that it supplies PlayStation first-party games on their launch day. The tier’s differentiators are Classics, trials, and streaming, while its Game Catalog remains subject to the same type of rotation and expiry rules as Extra.

What Xbox Game Pass includes
Ultimate: the multi-platform bundle
Game Pass Ultimate includes hundreds of games across Xbox console and PC, online console multiplayer, unlimited Xbox Cloud Gaming, in-game benefits, and major day-one releases. Microsoft’s comparison information also lists EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, and streaming on supported consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, mobile and tablet devices, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Meta VR headsets, and the xbox.com/play browser experience.
That device breadth changes the value calculation. A household with an Xbox and a Windows PC can use one subscription in places where PlayStation Plus cannot operate. A player who regularly moves between console, laptop, phone, television, or browser can also extract more value from Ultimate than the price table alone suggests.
Microsoft cautions that titles, features, numbers, and availability vary by region, plan, platform, and time. A feature shown in a general comparison may not be available on every device or in every country, so verify the specific game and hardware combination before subscribing for streaming.
PC Game Pass: the focused PC option
PC Game Pass costs $13.99 per month, or about $167.88 over 12 months at that rate. It is designed for Windows PC players who do not need Xbox console multiplayer or the complete Ultimate bundle. It retains the central Game Pass attraction—access to a large PC library and eligible day-one releases—without charging for console and multi-device features you will not use.

For a PC-only player, compare PC Game Pass with the games you would otherwise buy at launch. If you play only one or two releases per year, buying those games may cost less than maintaining a full-year subscription; if you sample many releases, the subscription’s access model becomes more compelling.
Monthly games versus a rotating catalog
How the PlayStation entitlement works
Monthly Games are attached to your PlayStation Plus library when you claim them. You can play the claimed games while the membership is active, including after the monthly promotion has ended. If the membership expires, the entitlement is suspended; renewing restores access to eligible claimed games. This is different from owning a disc or purchasing a digital license outright.
Extra and Premium’s Game Catalog works differently. You do not permanently build a personal catalog merely by downloading a title. Sony can remove games, and the associated DLC access ends when the title leaves or the membership expires. Treat a catalog game as a rental-like access window and a Monthly Game as a claimable subscription entitlement, not as two versions of ownership.

How Game Pass access differs
Game Pass is primarily a catalog and launch-access service. Games can rotate, while major eligible releases can be available on day one. The practical advantage is immediate breadth: you can install or stream a new release without buying it separately. The trade-off is that continued access depends on the title remaining included and your membership remaining active.
Before committing to either service for one specific game, confirm three things in the live listing: that the game is included in your exact tier, that it is available on your platform, and that regional restrictions do not apply. Catalog numbers and availability change over time.
Day-one releases and the 2026 Call of Duty change
Game Pass Ultimate’s strongest value proposition is launch access to major eligible releases. This can outweigh its higher price for players who would otherwise buy several new games at full price. The benefit is not universal: each publisher and release can have its own platform and tier conditions.
Call of Duty requires special attention in 2026. Xbox Wire states: “Beginning this year, future Call of Duty titles won’t join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch.” Microsoft says new Call of Duty games will be added during the following holiday season, roughly a year later, while existing Call of Duty titles remain available.
If your subscription decision was based mainly on playing the next Call of Duty on release day, subtract that expected value from Ultimate. You may still find Ultimate worthwhile for other launch titles, cloud play, or its cross-device bundle, but the old assumption that every future Call of Duty arrives day one no longer applies.

A family with one PS5 and no Xbox or gaming PC gets little benefit from paying for Ultimate. Conversely, a household with an Xbox Series console and a Windows laptop can use Ultimate in two ecosystems without maintaining separate subscriptions. Shared household play also makes the included online multiplayer and device access more valuable when several people use the same account ecosystem.
Which service is cheaper for a year?
For a full-year commitment, PlayStation Plus Extra at $134.99 is the clear low-cost broad-catalog option. Premium costs $25 more annually. Ultimate has no published annual price in the cited 2026 announcement; twelve months at $22.99 per month works out to about $275.88, more than double Extra’s annual list price. PC Game Pass works out to about $167.88, which is close to Premium but covers a different platform and release model.

Do not compare only the subscription totals. Estimate the games you would actually buy without the service, then account for games you will never play. A $22.99 month in which you play three launch releases can be better value than a $16.99 month spent browsing a catalog without starting anything. The reverse is true for a PS5 owner who regularly finishes older catalog games and rarely buys new releases.
A practical decision process
- List your active hardware. Write down PS5, Xbox console, Windows PC, and any supported streaming devices you will genuinely use. Eliminate tiers that do not operate on your primary platform.
- Separate multiplayer from library access. If online console multiplayer is the only requirement, compare Essential with the minimum Xbox plan available for your account rather than jumping directly to Ultimate.
- Mark your next six must-play games. Check each game’s current inclusion, platform, tier, and region. Do not count a game that is merely rumored or listed for another tier.
- Classify your preferred access model. Choose PlayStation Monthly Games when you value claiming a monthly entitlement, or a catalog service when you prefer trying many titles and accept removals.
- Price the features you will use. Add value for cloud streaming, Classics, trials, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, and multi-device access only when you will actually use them.
- Check the renewal cadence. Use the annual PlayStation plan when you expect a full year of use and the published annual discount suits you. Treat the monthly Ultimate calculation as a budgeting figure, not a promise of an annual plan.
- Recheck before paying. Catalogs, prices, supported devices, and regional availability change. Verify the live PlayStation and Xbox service pages on the day you subscribe.
Common mistakes that reduce value
- Assuming a catalog download is permanent. Extra, Premium, and Game Pass titles can leave; a downloaded file does not preserve access after removal or expiry.
- Counting every advertised device. Cloud support can depend on region, browser, operating system, television model, controller, and the specific game.
- Using the monthly price for a year-long PlayStation comparison. The annual Essential, Extra, and Premium prices are materially lower than paying twelve monthly instalments.
- Buying Ultimate only for future Call of Duty launches. Under Microsoft’s 2026 policy, future titles arrive around the following holiday season rather than at launch.
- Ignoring DLC timing. When a catalog game leaves, access to its associated DLC ends as well; finish time-sensitive expansions before the removal date.
- Assuming all launch releases qualify. Day-one access applies to eligible games and can vary by platform, region, and plan.

Choose PlayStation Plus Essential when…

You play only on PS5 or PlayStation consoles, want hundreds of downloadable PS4 and PS5 games, and prefer a lower annual cost than Ultimate. Accept that catalog games rotate and check removal dates for anything you plan to start later.
Choose PlayStation Plus Premium when…

Choose Game Pass Ultimate when…

Use the live service pages as the final authority immediately before purchase. A subscription is best evaluated against the games and devices available to you now, not against an old catalog screenshot or a launch policy that has since changed.
