Neither option is always cheaper. If you want only a few specific games, buying them individually may cost less; if you expect to play several games in PlayStation Plus’s rotating catalog, Extra or Premium may be better value. Compare the current prices of the games you’ll actually play with the cost of the Plus tier—and any online-multiplayer membership—you actually need.
How much does PlayStation Plus cost in the US?
PlayStation’s US plan page lists these prices. They are US prices accessed in 2026, not global prices, and may change. The annual figures are lower than paying the displayed monthly price for 12 months.

How to compare the cost fairly
Choose one period—usually a year—and compare the games and benefits you expect to use during that same period. Use prices for the same region and timeframe; a sale price should be compared with the subscription cost over the period you’ll subscribe, not treated as a permanent game price.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
- List the games you intend to play. Check each exact title and edition in your storefront or at the retailer where you would buy it.
- Add the purchase prices. If you’re considering discs, count resale or lending only as a possible advantage, not guaranteed cash recovery.
- Choose the lowest Plus tier that meets your needs. Compare against Essential if its benefits are enough; don’t charge yourself for Extra or Premium catalog access you won’t use.
- Account for online multiplayer. If you buy games but need Plus to play their online multiplayer, include Essential’s cost in the individual-buying route. PlayStation says most free-to-play games do not require membership.
- Count catalog games selectively. Include only games you want to play while they are available. Catalog lineups can change, and access depends on an active membership.
- Include games outside the subscription. For the subscription route, add the price of any games you still want that aren’t included in the benefits you’ll use.
A simple comparison is:
- Buying individually: current total price of the games you want, plus any Plus plan you still need for online play.
- Subscribing: price of the relevant Plus plan for the period, plus the cost of any games you still want outside its benefits.
There is no reliable universal break-even number of games: titles have different prices, and catalog availability, membership needs and play habits vary.
Buying a game and accessing it through Plus are different
Buying a game outright gives you a purchase rather than access tied to a catalog membership. PlayStation says Plus-discounted purchases are yours to keep, while catalog games are a membership benefit and may have announced removal dates. Monthly games claimed through Plus are also subscription-dependent: PlayStation Support says they become unavailable when membership ends. Does buying games remove the need for Plus?
Not necessarily. PlayStation’s US FAQ says, “For the majority of games that you have purchased on disc or downloaded from PlayStation Store, you need a PlayStation Plus membership plan to play online.” It also says, “Most free to play games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty Warzone do not require a membership.” These are PlayStation’s stated rules, not a guarantee that every individual game follows the same requirement; check the game’s online-play details. Which option is likely to cost less for you?
Buying individually may suit you if
- You have a short list of specific games and their current total is below the cost of the Plus tier you would otherwise choose.
- You prefer to retain purchases rather than rely on catalog access or monthly-game benefits.
- You don’t need Plus for online play, or you have included the cost of the tier you do need in your calculation.
Extra or Premium may suit you if
- You intend to play multiple games currently in the Game Catalog during the subscription period.
- You value the additional benefits of the tier you select, not just its catalog games.
- You’re comfortable with access depending on an active membership and a catalog that can change.
Premium costs more than Extra, so its additional benefits—such as the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming—matter only if you’ll use them. If you want Plus benefits such as online multiplayer but not the larger catalogs, compare Essential against buying the games you want rather than assuming a higher tier is better value.
