What is confirmed about the New Zealand launch?
Chery Group’s 3 October 2026 international roadmap named Australia and New Zealand as priority markets for Freelander’s right-hand-drive expansion. It did not give a New Zealand launch date or name retailers. Chery Group’s roadmap says local plans will be confirmed progressively.

CarExpert NZ reported on 4 October 2026 that the brand is planned to launch in New Zealand in 2027, led by the Freelander 8. The report says the exact timing, pricing, specifications and dealer appointments are still pending. Treat 2027 as the reported launch target, not a confirmed date for orders or deliveries. CarExpert NZ’s report attributes the plan to Kym Mellow, head of Freelander Australia and New Zealand.
Which New Zealand dealers will sell it?
No Freelander retailers have been named. Local reporting describes a plan to work with established dealerships offering premium showrooms and dedicated sales, service and aftersales training, but it does not identify the businesses. Do not assume that an existing Land Rover retailer or a Chery, Omoda or Jaecoo outlet will carry or service Freelander.

Land Rover New Zealand’s retailer locator lists its own retailers and authorised repairers; it is not a Freelander dealer list. Wait for an official Freelander appointment before treating any retailer as an authorised sales or service point.
What is the Freelander brand, and does overseas specification apply?
Freelander is a collaboration between JLR and Chery, not simply a current Land Rover model. In June 2024, JLR said the Freelander name was licensed to the 50:50 Chery Jaguar Land Rover joint venture. The initial plan was to sell vehicles in China through a distinct retailer network, with global exports intended over time. JLR and Chery’s announcement explains that arrangement.

The Freelander 8 unveiled for the Middle East has market-specific equipment and specifications. Chery says its published figures apply to that market and that specifications vary by market and trim. They do not establish what New Zealand buyers will receive. Chery’s global launch announcement is explicit about this market distinction.

What should buyers ask before paying a deposit?
Because the New Zealand retailer and vehicle details remain unannounced, ask for written answers rather than relying on overseas specifications or verbal estimates. Before committing, work through these questions with the appointed retailer:

- Vehicle and trim: Is this a New Zealand-market, right-hand-drive vehicle? Which trim and powertrain are confirmed for New Zealand?
- Price: What is the drive-away price, what does it include, and can the price change between order and delivery?
- Deposit and cancellation: Is the payment an expression-of-interest fee, a refundable deposit or a binding order? What are the written refund and cancellation terms?
- Timing and changes: What is the estimated delivery window? What happens if the launch is delayed or the build specification changes?
- Warranty: What are the vehicle and high-voltage battery warranty terms, and what exclusions apply?
- Servicing and support: Where will routine servicing and high-voltage repairs be done? Are parts held locally, and what roadside assistance is included?
- Software and safety: Which driver-assistance, connectivity and software features are approved and active in New Zealand? Are any market- or subscription-dependent?
- Charging: Which connector, charging rate and charging equipment apply to the New Zealand vehicle? What home-charging setup does the retailer recommend?
- Documents: Can the retailer provide the final New Zealand specification sheet, warranty document and order terms before taking a deposit?
Ask the retailer to put the answers—and any conditions or change rights—in the order documents. The launch communication says further safety, interior, service and product information will be provided through local market communications; it does not settle those details for New Zealand. Chery’s roadmap and CarExpert NZ’s report describe the outstanding local announcements.

- Drive-away price and how reliable the delivery estimate is.
- Five- or six-seat layout, passenger room and usable cargo space.
- Confirmed New Zealand powertrain, electric-only driving capability and charging requirements.
- Towing capacity, ground clearance and all-terrain equipment if those matter for your use.
- Warranty coverage, service locations, parts availability and roadside support.
- Which safety, driver-assistance and connected features are included, approved and free of ongoing conditions.
Do not make a head-to-head buying decision from Chinese or Middle Eastern specifications alone; Chery says the Middle East model’s figures are market-specific. Its launch announcement does not confirm a New Zealand version’s equipment or performance.
